I am unrepentant. If people don't want to be corrected, they can just ignore me. But I suspect there are a lot of people out there who would actually appreciate being told they they were using a word incorrectly. I certainly don't mind if someone corrects me. I don't have my ego all tied up in being right.

I would agree. Once upon a time, I was dating a woman from Puerto Rico. She spoke English quite well (better than a lot of Americans I know), but had some problems with verb tenses (English is notorious for this). The first time I corrected her, I immediately asked if that bothered her. She said it did not, and that she wanted me to always correct her, even if there were other people around.

They are important factors, but you are misusing the word critical.

Typing words in all caps in the middles of a sentence is just as wrong as using arch instead of arc. Or worse really. Correcting you if case someone less knowledgeable does come along and learn something wrong.

Critical

7.of decisive importance with respect to the outcome; crucial: a critical moment.
8.of essential importance; indispensable

I see where you're coming from, but I'm not sure I'd consider my use of the word inappropriate.

Success is life is measured by a lot of things, and your definition might include requirements like proper spelling/typing.

Considering what a large population in the world isn't even functionally literate (able to read a newspaper) and there would be countless more who make grammar/spelling errors; to say that all those people are lacking a critical factor which will mean they are unable to achieve success in life isn't a statement I'd agree with.

You're saying that approx 14% of North American adults (low literacy skills) are lacking a critical factor for their success in life.

I'm sure many of these people consider their life to be successful by their definitions.

I do think the higher your literacy skills, the more success you will have with work, especially white collar work. But you can have a happy, healthy productive life that enriches others without ever getting the comma spacing right.

The main point of the thread was concluded - and the pointing out of the terminology error was done simply and without rudeness, in my opinion.

Although, technically, he gave a common example, not a true definition. Arches are not only found on the top of stone archways

Try and find it elsewhere, then host it yourself. I can get there; in fact, gimme a minute. EDIT : Master-Blade's Popcorn smiley :

You can access the site? Man, I have not been able to view it for weeks. I double checked that I didn't accidentally block the domain or something, but I still cannot visit the page. I use FireFox, but I even tested in IE as well with same result.

I'd simply save and host it myself, but there is a handful of smileys I used on a regular basis, as well as the random search for other funny ones.

Save the ones you use a lot; inability to access that site seems to happen frequently for you.

Also, the advertisements wikia uses seem to frequently get poisoned with virus and such.

It doesn't happen frequently.. I lost access a few weeks ago and have not been able to pull it up since. It's been one long span of time.

First I thought the site was down for maintenance. Then I thought they closed. If I can ever pull it up, I'll save a few, but I even deleted my bookmarks for the site last week.

But since you guys seem to be able to visit the site just fine, I have no clue what the problem could be now. I've tried both my browsers on both my computers. I've tried different times of day. Still nothing at all. It's as if the site does not exist. I even tried to pull up an archive on the "Wayback Machine", and got a "Data Retrieval Failure." I just don't get it. lol

Might I add, the rules of grammar change every other day... Every generation is either learning a new rule, or is dealing with the absense of a rule in the ever shifting battle to find the 'perfect sentence.'

You know, I saw the 'nerdrage' tag, so naturally it piqued (note, not 'peaked') my curiosity.

"This thread seems innocent enough. Where's the ... Oh, wait, here we go."

For those who rage against being corrected, I would only say this. Someday, spelling and grammar might make the difference between getting a job, promotion, or other reward, and not getting it. And spelling and grammar are both learned skills. It's not something you just turn on and 'do it right' when you know it counts.

For those who live to correct, and who rage against being forced to read post after post of horribly-constructed grammar, lolspeak, 7334speak and skipped Oxford commas?

Lighten up, Francis.

This is still going?

I fully understand the importance of good grammar, but all this started over a single letter and a typo no less according to the OP. I am SO sorry I decided to call out Camper for what I felt was a little extreme.

Oh, and thanks for posting your global in your signature, Aggelakis.

Actually, we were just having a little bit of fun with the nosediving topic derailment, now that the OP's question was successfully answered.

I must say though, your comment against Camper wasn't extreme, just oppositional. Fact is, our comments against yours were not meant to attack you (Not in the least!), our follow-up posts were more of an attempt to summerize the intentions of the poster in question. Y'know, to clarify that nothing was meant by his post, he just saw it as an opporatunity to lend his assistance.

That LAST comment, although I'm not entirely sure what you were insinuating, was a little extreme.

Now you're wrong. Using all caps for emphasis is a style choice. Using arch instead of arc is simply wrong.

Just pointing this out in case someone less knowledgeable about trolling comes along and your post slips past them.

You're using style choice as an excuse for incorrect capitalisation? That's wrong.
The same rationale would work for leet speak, and for people WhO TYpe LiKE THIs TOO wHIcH is FOr STyLE.

Don't understand your line about trolling, can you clarify why you think my post is trolling but your correcting post wasn't?

I believe this is an example of what I like to call the non-apology apology. It's all the rage these days.
