Altaholic in desperate need of help!
160+ characters here. Things that have gotten me to 50:
1. Goals.
First it was wanting to unlock Khelds. Then trying to get one of each AT to 50. Or trying to get an older character I liked but hadn't touched in a while to 50. Or working on one of each (AT) primary.
Setting a goal of some sort helps. You can still jump around - just set an overriding goal up and work on doing it.
2. RP.
Maybe not for you - but if it helps you get attached to a character and enjoy it, why not? (RP can be anythign from writing, time in Pocket D, etc. to just deciding to work on various groups and telling your own "story" in game by picking and choosing contacts.)
3. Theme teams.
Have a group that's working on - oh - an "all X/Y superteam?" Well, there you go.
4. SGs.
Just playing with friends, getting a group that "works together," can help concentrate on one or two specific characters, with time *not* with that group being spent on the others to get your alt itch scratched.
I don't worry about getting a toon to 50. I have 3 accounts and only 2 50s (most of my toons are between 20 and 35 with a couple between 30 and 45.) I just play what is fun and switch to a different toon when I get bored. Because this game is all about the journey to 50 and not what happens when you hit 50, I just never felt the need to make the push to 50. RP has done wonders for getting me to stick with one toon for longer, but that just means that I tend to chose them when I want to RP and one of my nonRP toons what I just want to smash stuff.

#2 Actually does make sense and would prob help the most but for some reason it comes hardest to me now. Something about my first character (despite honestly being fairly generic) kept me crafting a story in my head. The alts that came after her actually had a few interesting ideas/bgs built into em but I couldn't recapture the firsts enjoyment of the rp aspect.
As for goals I will definitely try setting some attainable goals here this time. Though my one goal of a level 50 villain was so I could play the VEATs but now I have access to them >.< Doh!
I have a system by which I dictate whose turn it is and when I am allowed to create new characters...
* Each Server is allowed one character to start.
* I start out by playing them in alphabetical order by server name; after the first run-through I run them in the order they were introduced into the rotation.
* Each character is allowed one day of play; I don't worry about 8 hour play days vs 20 minute play days... it all evens out eventually.
* At the end of the turn (ie-when I reach the bottom of my list) each server gets a 2%/round since their last added character cumulative chance of getting a new player created on it. So, if Champion server last created a player in round 4 and Freedom in round 7 and it is currently the end of round 10, Champion has a 12% chance of getting a new player and Freedom a 6% chance.
* If any player on any server finally reached 50th level during the current round that server automatically gets a new player.
This way everybody gets a turn; I don't have any characters who aren't being played. Also I don't find myself immediately with more characters than I can handle since chances are relatively low of a new player being introduced all the time.
This is yet another aspect of my OCD... er... my Tournament and Spreadsheet method of playing CoH.
My mind wanders so often you've probably seen its picture on milk cartons. - Me... the first person version of the third person Steelclaw
*Breaks out the graphing paper and calculator.... only to break down and cry at the thought of doing more math for CoH*
Hehe Interesting take though on it. Although I have often just wished I could put a timelock on chars so they couldn't be played in a weeks time or so heh.

Just think with the new EAT rules you new have two more villain ATs you could level and they branch so that's a potential of at least 4 new characters to start on!

Well... least I can dual build them. >.<
Embrace it. Altitis is the winning team's disease.

As someone who had 9 accounts at my worst, and am still at 5 right now, with over 170 characters on one server, with my highest hero and villain each at Level 44, all I have to say is:
Have fun.
Ok, maybe I should say a little more. But really, that _is_ what is important here. If you enjoy playing new characters, don't hate yourself for it.
If you want to reach 50, well . . . first ask yourself a very important question: Why?
Is your reason a logical, personal, or emotional reason? Those would all be valid.
Are you being pressured by your peers? That isn't so valid. I mean, unless you play for THEIR enjoyment, and not your own.
Do you want an e-peen? . . . well, I don't want to force my morals on you, but I don't see that as valid reasoning. Besides, if that's really what's important to you, I think you should argue that your e-peen size is related to your total net levels gained, or total experience points, or something like that. "Win" the game by your own standards.
Is there a game content/mechanics reason? No valid at all. Join the war against flawed game design! Encourage the Devs to create content which can appeal to ALL players.
So, if we've come to establish that reaching 50 is, indeed, important to you:
. . .
Well, um, you know, I think others have posted plenty of suggestions and whatnot.
I suppose I could add: Find yourself a sugardaddy/mommy.
I have the same problem. I have a total of 1 level 50 hero after 4 years of playing this game. He's also the first hero I ever made! . But anyway, I find the trick to keeping a character interesting is an interesting concept, you could call it RP I guess, but I don't see it that way. Having friends to play with also helps.
Just kinda embrace altitis though. When you find a character you really like, you'll be surprised how fast they can level up.

Oh fun is never lacking, just self-discipline I suppose. The reason for wanting atleast one other 50 is because the one I have now is essentially retired. Because she was my first and favorite for so long I don't want to change anything about her but over many many issues she has become less thrilling on her own. She's had her run and now I would like another I can badge hunt with and run high level things with. Which ofcourse leads to my problem of not being able to pick just one to work on for the time being to maybe get that other 50. Thats only for blue side though where I had done a large portion of my playing, I haven't even seen most of red side because of this issue. So my reasons seem to fall under all 3 valid ones, logical, emotional, and personal. ^_^
Lillika thinks something's wrong: Everytime I resub I find myself faced with the same problem over and over. WHICH CHARACTER DO I CHOOSE?! It is seemingly impossible for me to stick with one character and play them up to finally have a 2nd hero at level 50 or even a first villain there. Its not that I get bored with them but my Archtype ADD kicks in and I want to try some new idea or combo (sometimes leading to the deletion of lower characters so I have room.) Does anyone else seem to suffer from this same plight. How do you cope with it? Any advice for a terrible Altaholic for me so I can FINALLY get a second char to max? |
EDIT: This was my lineup of 43 characters after a mere month in the game back in '06 (clickie for bigger), and I've way more than doubled that since then. Don't bother to fight it, altitis always wins.
Name key.

I have a crazy case of altitis, too. I don't have any set plan on who I play, other than jumping in on organized TFs; those tend to dictate which character I play. Apart from that, I just look at who's been offline for a bit and choose them. Lately it's been the doppelganger missions, so I've been hitting the 20-29 level toons most often, particularly the Scrappers and Blasters, since they can solo the two Elite Bosses in those arcs.

i like new toons, but i can keep altitis under control because i only play on one server and im limited by how many toon slots are on that server (the very very few toons i made off server are very rarely ever seen again, the few i have right now are lvl 1 and didnt go through tutorial, i think i have 1 toon thats lvl 14, but thats it, most of them left forgotten with over 400 days since they were last logged in)
I have no alts, so I'm not sure what sort of advice to give you

. . . how about you just don't post in this thread then?
Oh, and sorry for feeding the troll, everyone. Sometimes I have a moment of weakness and think I'll actually get through to her.
Cope with it? I REVEL in it. It took me just short of three years to get my first 50. And that's fine with me. This game's about the journey, not the destination. Having a 50 is overrated.

Then again with the new end game content coming this might change...

GG's not a troll. She's stubborn and hidebound and sometimes a bit of an attention ***** (no offense meant. I am, too, that's how I know), but a troll? Trolling is about an attempt to disrupt for no reason. I've never seen GG intend to disrupt, she just gives her opinions where some people don't think she should, which is baloney.
Now Graystar....THAT'S a troll (I was actually surprised to see him post some normal posts lately).

Crazy altitis freak here too. Made two more characters on Thursday and just settled on placeholders for my characters once KM goes live.
But yeah, it's a matter of goals. For me, I really wanted Singularity on my grav controller, so I resolved this weekend to play Defenestration Lass and no one else. Got from 22 to five bars from 32, so I'm quite pleased with myself. Would have dinged 32 had I not been so blasted tired at 8 PM.
Currently playing:
The Domestic: Broom/WP
Shadowhex: Dark Control/Dark Affinity
Defenestration Lass: Grav/Kin

You can start characters on a brand-new server and send them money and enhancements from your higher-level characters anywhere. This can open up a lot more character slots to fill with alts. You could always do that, of course, but now you won't be rock-bottom-poor on each new server -- unless you want to be.

Like others have said, It's about the journey, not the destination.
Sure there are some that go about yelling they have 300 50s and if you don't have that many 50s your a n00b!! Well it's obvious these guys saw the AE last year and had a field day getting a new 50 every 8 hours...
I currently have 6 50s accros 2 accounts, and yes my goal is to have a 50 of each AT. But I want the power combinations to feel right and be fun for me to play. I've deleted hundereds of characters in this quest.
My advice is to carry on alting until you find a caracter that FEELs right... Weather it be power combinations, a costume, a concept or even just a really cool name...
