I think the other thing that leaps out at me, is the evident fact that most folks haven't figured out the idea of bid-creeping... |
If the 'last 5' seems reasonable to me, I'm happy to overshoot it by enough to make sure I get mine NAO. =)

I'm glad I saw this thread. I was thinking that I priced my L33 Obliteration Quad recipe too high at 40M when the last five (blueside) were 4 at 20M and one at 50M. With zero supply (other than mine), I'll see what shakes out over time.
Only tangentially related, but not worth a new thread. I noticed this weekend that Psionic Threat Reports (heroside) were going for 100,000 even though they're white salvage -- and more to the point, there were only two of them for sale. I had 2 in my inventory, so I threw them up for 500,000, five times the going rate.
Returned in a few hours to find mine had sold for 500,000 each and now 87 were in the market going for 2,000-10,000.
I had also put two Titanium Shards (yellow salvage) on the market, just to push them out of my inventory. They were selling for 20,000 with one at 50,000; I put them up for 21,000 just to keep them above the hypothetical flipper's acquisition price and theoretically expose them to the bids of casual shoppers. I sold one of them for 150,000, and the other for 7.5 million (probably an entry error).

Just got back to the game and back into the market.
Had some Mako's Acc/Dam on one of my toons and instead of posting at the normal 5 mil or so rate I followed the goat rule and posted a few at 15 mil. Of the 4 posted at this triple the going rate I got back 2 in less than a week.

The amount of INF in the CoX economy these days is incredible. Still, I'm still a cheap bidder/builder b/c that's how I am in RL. I don't go shopping unless there's a sale on.
I start putting out low-ball bids as soon as I start a project; it takes a lot of the GIMME NAO pressure away.

Yup yup...I have multiple characters with billions....not quadrillions like some of these yahoos....I start a project and merely log on one alt at a time with my shopping list....place a couple of bids each and then go play the new idea. I log on the next week with my alts, craft and mail to my global (formerly limited to SG base enhancement dumps) and get back to playing. Its the easiest way I can think of to IO out a character. The new character will buy or merit-buy any IOs I missed along the way.

Of course, if everyone did it (use the market frugally/profitably), it wouldn't work like this. Not that I ever really did, but I especially don't worry about that these days. My experience with the market, this forum, and people I play with makes me comfortable in the knowledge that, as long as there is CoH (and they don't radically revamp how we earn currency) there will always be people who have zero interest in saving/accumulating inf and will throw it at the market with wild abandon.

There'd still be room for some profit... if I'm going to make 5 million on a crafted item instead of, say, 20 million, I'm perfectly willing to pay 55,908 instead of waiting and paying 20,908.

As Fulmens said, if saving, say 100k, on salvage means waiting a couple hours, I'd rather just pay the "convenience fee" and get the item crafted and up for sale. Time is only as valuable a commodity as you make it, but I tend to want to "Sell it NAO" and get my profit so I can get my next shiney for whatever build I'm working on.
I generally don't even pay attention to what I spend on salvage.
IMHO an IO that's selling cheap enough to make you sweat the difference between 50k spent on salvage and 500k spent on salvage isn't worth crafting in the first place.
I bought all this stuff super cheap just to make a point.
The salvage bids all filled pretty much instantly, the recipes I had to wait overnight for.
Sold three that day and the rest overnight.

I'd like to invade the Goat's thread to bemoan my lack of luck with the RNG.
While fiddling around in Abyss' Defeat Vindicators arc, I received a Heactomb: Damage/Endurance, Absolute Amazement: Recharge/Accuracy and a LOTG 7.5 off the Merit roll, the latter of which was the final slot in my Mind/Fire Dom's new build.
The random generator is random: I can't prove I get good drops, but I will be richer on the morrow.
Nice screenies Goat. I've occasionally flipped stuff, but mostly I fill your tin cans due to impatience!

Hey as an often BUYITNAO I thank you guys for making sure I can.
|
I can see where the BUYITNAO people are coming from because, even though I know I could make money faster by marketeering, I have been having a lot more fun playing and I don't mind that my cash is dwindling.
Even small-fry tactics, like bid creeping on salvage, can spiral into several wasted minutes if I let it. Throw up a high bid and play, or throw up a low bid and play (even if underslotted), I say. Time spent guesstimating sellers' intentions is time I could run around and play, even if a spot or two is unslotted.
time - if it takes 5 mins, or 25 mins, it's all good to me... Efficiency only matters
if Urgency requires minimizing the time costs. For me, nothing in the game is "Urgent".
Cheers,
