Clueless sorta older player, need some help (casual live zone/arena build)

So I'm just trying to entertain myself for the next few weeks and haven't pvp'd in a few issues (seriously in like 2 years, haven't played period in 1), and will not be investing much more than whatever money I can scrounge from my current 50s (not a lot as most are unslotted). Also, I would post something for you guys to work with but, first of all, I have no idea what a good build looks like any more, and secondly, I don't have mids on this laptop.

So if anyone could suggest a basic build for a one of the following heroes and one of the following villains that you think would be my best bet

50 Heroes that I haven't deleted yet and that could possibly be suited for this (i.e. no farmers, old team types (sonics/kins/etc.)): Psy/Em, Elec/Em, Cold/Dark, Storm/Dark, Ice/Storm, Mind/Storm, Peacebringer, Shield/Stone

50 Villains with same criteria: Fire/Cold, Elec/WP (stalker), Elec/Therm, Sonic/Pain, Earth/Nrg, Mind/Fire, Necro/Poison

I feel like the Psy/Nrg and then either the Elec/Therm or Mind/Fire would've been my best bets last time I played. Again, sorry for the lack of builds to work with. Just keep the IO'age light given my circumstances if you can help at all.

psy/em - cheapest to build to get to max hp, placate proc is cheap.
cold/dark - cheap

Earth/Nrg - ask to fight an elec/therm....i bet they all say no. psi blasters can give you a run for your money or beat you outright. the only other ones who stand a chance might be rads and n. widows.

wb Rikti, I remember you. You definitely have more possibilities with vils. On heroes, psy/em is the only one to bother with. The others aren't gonna be that good.

But on vils, every single one of those is great. The elec/WP is pretty much the best stalker build currently, elec/therm is about as FotM as it gets for dueling, sonic/pain is a great team toon, earth/nrg is great, mind/fire is great, and the MM is great for duels.

Don't even know which I would pick if I could only pick one of those. Probably the stalker, since zone PvP is now basically just scrappers/tanks vs stalkers....except rare times when good players show up and it becomes blasters vs stalkers and a few corrs.

Are the builds for most of those characters generally the same? I.e. just get leadership with cold or force and slot about the same and all with the blaster, etc.

Ice/storm and Mind/storm aren't bad for teams

I'd add in that a Triform Peacebringer can do ok as well...

The nova is a pretty effective attacker, you have heals in human and Dwarf.

Essence Boost can also pump up your HP into Tanker range, and with
Quantum Shift, and multiple travel powers, you have options for escaping
bad situations as well.

It's more involved from a usage standpoint than some of the other AT's
you mention, but in skilled hands, it can be viable.

You can get the same stun from fire and grav and have sets that don't suck.

1. sure if you want the stun duration shorter.
2. flashfire requires your target to be on the ground gl w/ that and point 1.
3. wormhole is indeed nice...but see point 1.
4. they'll be able to pop inspirations before you can finish them off with fire or grav stuns.
5. the only thing that would suck is picking fire and grav over earth.

Dont bother with the primary stuns for the most part(Apart from wormhole). I think if you're energy you should just slot total focus with HOs. Much much better mileage from that.

LOL. earth/eng rapes elec/therm, fire/doms, cold/darks all day. Something about double stacked and proc'd pr and proc'd total focus and longer stun duration for earth than other sets. 3 hits is all it takes.

im not sure if grasshoppa is still around but he has an earth/eng and im sure his build would whoop on the best elec/therm on freedom easily.

Break Frees actually help. Either way you would rather go with fire/grav nrg. Fire is probably the best for duels and grav is probably the best for zones. Fire wins hands down in teams.

Maybe just choose the one you enjoy playing the most and go from there, possibly worrying about dominating the zone after you've gotten your feet wet?

It's no wonder we see all the same AT's/Builds in zones......bah.

If you are just looking for fun then you probably aren't posting here. And the reason we always see the same builds(and we don't FYI) is because people gravitate to the best sets so they can do the best.

I agree with the first part. BF's do work against stuns on a squishy, and fire is definitely really good in duels. Better than grav.

For zone Grav is really the top set when it comes to doms. My grav/fire is a million steps ahead of either my mind/fire or fire/elec doms when it comes to zone play. You have a KB power that does decent damage and wormhole is retarded easy to leverage, especially if you're on a team.

Thats true but the only times you would have a dom on a team is to set up spikes. There are way better disruption toons. Fire has more pets(not much of a deal though) and has quicker animation times on the hold too. At the end of the day both have really quick single target immobilizes so its up to the player. Grav does get the cage but again there are way better disruption toons that a grav dom.
