Nearly 6 years and CoH storyarcs
I don't think I've even completed every story arc once even. I'm sure there's quite a few that I've never even started, and I've been here since launch.
I used to obsess about this, but I pretty much gave up when they added patrol XP.
I do occasionally turn off XP if I want to hold back a character long enough to unlock a special contact (mainly in CoV where I am still exploring the mid to higher levels), but otherwise I simply have too many characters to play 600 hours on all of them.
I figure I can either skip some of the low-level missions or skip the high-level ones that they don't get to play because they never got high enough.
I've done it with a character or two hero and villain side, couldn't do it with all of them as I'd sooner have a lot of cool characters to play than just a couple by the time the game ends. TFs are good for leveling to me now.
He will honor his words; he will definitely carry out his actions. What he promises he will fulfill. He does not care about his bodily self, putting his life and death aside to come forward for another's troubled besiegement. He does not boast about his ability, or shamelessly extol his own virtues. - Sima Qian.
Recently I finished up my shield/war mace tank project, which was to do EVERY contact and their associated storyarcs on the way to 50 (not via Ouro). This necessitated turning off xp earning many, many times heh.
After nearly 6 years of being on this game, I still try to do every storyarc for all toons be it tanker, defender, etc etc. The feature of turning off xps makes it so much easier than simply using debt though that can be fun too. Before that feature came to us, I'd get ribbing from friendlies or people I don't normally team with for running to monster island to get whacked a few times for debt cap. So the question here is...how many others have a 'compulsion' to complete every storyarc for each contact for every alt? Probably be difference of opinions for 5+ year vets as opposed to a newer player but all welcome to chime in. If I'm alone on this, tell me where I can seek counseling heh heh. |

I've completed out Mercy Island so far. I need to unlock Veluna Lunata and do her arcs to complete Port Oakes. Already have 35 merits and about a quarter million inf just from selling drops.
Have also put about 30K prestige into a friend's SG.
Great way to rack up temp powers and badges.
I did this way, way back in the day before any of the XP boosts were around. Every story arc (except for Croatoa), every badge mission (except for the very first one, which I missed), and every TF (except Moonfire, I think).
Never surrender! Never give up!

I used to do this, but with Ouro, I don't quite worry so much anymore. There are certain things I do try to do on each character, though. I get each of the bank mission explore badges, as they're a pain to get otherwise. I'll unlock TF contacts such as Karsis, Hess and Hannon. And I try to get each contact to the point that they'll sell me inspirations. I know, you can always hit AE or Ouro for them, but it satisfies my OCD to get at least that far.

I levelled my latest hero by running all the TF's with the remainder of the levels being completed by running as many story arcs as I could find.
I then ran every arc in Ouroborous.
I am now doing the same with my villain.
And, yes, I am a [insert ridiculous amount of time] vet.
Used to be pretty keen to experience every story arc, I was pretty hardcore about soloing when I started this game, and I think I've gotten most of the ones that existed before I10 or so on some character or other. However as of the last couple of years I've only hit the arcs I'd get in between teaming. I vastly prefer to team now, where it's difficult to follow along an arc, if the team bothers with one at all. I don't really miss 'em honestly, they were nice but sadly somewhat generic out of necessity.
There are several TFs though that I've never done, and I've yet to see what a SF is like.

Some of the unlockable contacts on the villain side have unlocking requirements that are way too tedious to justify doing the arc, as far as I'm concerned. And one of the unlockable contacts can only be unlocked by doing a respec trial, and I don't do trials.
Plus I don't bother with the TFs at all. I did a couple TFs way back when, but those were when I was still a member of some active supergroups.
I've been here since late 2005, and I haven't done all of the content in the game. I actually haven't done quite a few of the TFs/SFs either.
I have never turned off XP earning; before that was available, I never went into debt for content except to get the Bling badge for Doctor Buzzsaw villainside, once.
Amusingly enough, due to editing on the wiki, however, even though I haven't done the content I am familiar with it already.

Dec out.
So far, completed each and every mission from each and every contact once, on my AR/Dev blaster - I'm up to Lv40 on my tanker, and mopping up loose ends on my Lv35 archery/mentalist.
So yep, you're not alone.
I used to try for that. I'm not sure way - completist mentality, I guess. I wanted to get all of the arcs I could get, I'd go into debt, I'd do outlevelled arcs and so forth. I wanted to catch 'em all. I'd actually refuse to team because that would prevent me from starting the next story arc.
At one point, though, I was invited to a team, had the brief "But I want to do this arc!" moment and then thought "Hold on a minute. I've done that arc. So what if I skip it. I'll do it next time." Since that moment of epiphany (and it was) I've actually been pretty easy-going about arcs, always looking to do the LATEST missions I had and usually sidestepping old, ageing arcs because I've done them and I'll do them again on other characters. It's made my experience of the game a lot less stressful.

Rather than focus on doing every single arc, I instead take a character and think about what kind of adventures that character would involve himself in. For example, one of my tanks is a doctor, so he did all the Vhazilok arcs, and is now working on the Devouring Earth stuff because it is what would interest him. Anything else he picks up is just gravy.
Infinity
Sam Varden 50 MA/Reg Scrap
Doomtastic 50 SS/Inv Brute
Ceus 50 Eng/Kin Corr
Cinderstorm 50 Fire/Fire Blaster
The only "compulsion" I've got is to get all of the passive accolades for all of my characters no matter what. Other than that, I just enjoy the trip to level 50.
Now, in similar terms with your character, my main character is a complete souvenir ***** and a vast majority of his souvenirs were earned back before exemping and Ouroboros where he earned them by simply running absolutely every single mission he could (back before those pesky things like mission difficulty and xp curve smoothing made it so that you could actually skip content rather than simply run out of it). I've actually gone back and rerun arcs that he did back before the Council/5th Column switch just so I could get the "duplicate" souvenirs with the difference of enemy group listed but everything else the same (you'd be surprised just how many of those there are because even just a single reference to the Council or 5th Column generates a different souvenir). As it stands now, I have nearly as many souvenirs as a villain would have (villains have substantially more souvenirs, but all of their arcs are shorter and a fair number can award two different souvenirs based on success or failure), and more than any other hero can have.
So, while I can't say that I'm quite as anal about completing everything for all of my characters, I can say that I've probably got one character that outanals most of yours thanks to his disturbing souvenir lust.
My main toon and badger hasn't even finished all of the story arcs available to her, not even through Ouroboros. I have far too many toons and not enough time to play to accomplish such an endeavor.
I can see the interest and appeal, but I go by just the opposite mentality--
I like the idea that the devs have provided so many avenues of advancement that my characters can take rather different career paths. Sure, I still usually hit the "storied" zones (Hollows, Faultline, Striga, Croatoa) with most of them, but in between, they can take very different advancement choices. The less overlap, the better.
I usually just do the ones i find the most fun Magic man arc? YES PWEASE!

Kidding aside, the anal part of me in my early CoH career was to 'clear all' for every mission even if that was not the objective. It was the 'completist' side of the personality talking and for the most part, I ended up clearing everything for my shield tank project.
It was a fun and yes, long task to take my shield tank to 50. That project was pretty much all solo unless I needed to knock out a tf that was in my particular level range at the time. I don't think I'll be doing something like that again for awhile (or until there are more contacts or changes to existing ones).

No arguments from me. I have batches of alts (anywhere from 2-4 toons) I tend to level up. Once they are done, I usually have a fresh batch with new powerset combos I like to run around.
Chase_Arcanum
Would totally agree. I appreciate all the different avenues to level now especially when you can earn xps while exemped. On a small twist of irony, the backstory of my shield tank has him materializing in Paragon through a glitch of the AE system and my shield tank's creator ended up being trapped inside AE. (yes, its sounds very Tron-like I realize). The only AE badge he has is the Early Bird one heh.
Umbral
You bring up the point of souvenirs for doing storyarcs as they are yet another measure for 'collectors' to compare each other to. In the early days, there were more of them than badges to go around. Think I'll have to take a closer look at how many souvenirs my main has heh.
And like you, I get every passive accolade bonus for all my alts. They are simply too good to ignore imo.
Samuel_Tow
I think you're spot on with simply focusing on the experience of the game. After nearly 6 years of this game with a preference to soloing at launch to current modus operandi of putting together tfs/sfs whenever possible. The social experience of the game has come into much more relevance the past few years for me. In a sense, its all about teaming for TFs and SFs.

This probably makes me the odd one of bunch but I intentionally avoided all missions on a recent character. With the new ssk system I've taken him to 47 just on sewer teams.
