Bad example.
I don't have a cell phone because I don't need one. I am constantly badgered about it by family members which proves my belief that it would be for the convenience of OTHER people and not me.

Overall, though, no I don't avoid something because it's popular. As an example, when we got the shield set I had recently started a tank. I had no intention of making a shield tank until I was done with the previous one. Then someone suggested I should get the name Ironshield, which I did. I made a toon to camp the name and made my tank months later - when I got around to it.

Great name IB!

As an aside. The reason I finally got a cell was I had no choice.
My fiance was driving home one night when she passed a car upside down in a ditch that looked just like mine.
She called the house but I was online (good ol dial-up days)
When she got home the look on her face terrified me. She grabbed my arm and literally dragged me to wal-mart where I reluctantly bought a prepaid virgin mobile. 8 years later and I'm a text-fiend.

If something I'm interested in is popular, that doesn't affect my enjoyment of said thing. On the other hand if I'm ambivalent about something and it becomes in your face popular, I start hating said thing.

I never said it was bad- just that it speaks to the moment. How people percieve things change and good and bad are decided later.

I think the term "sheeple" came from an ad campaign if I'm not mistaken.

At any rate, sometimes my tastes coincide with the mainstream, and sometimes they do not. I don't really care either way, whether in build choices in-game, or in real life.

As far as in-game goes, my first character that I created when the game first came out, is Spectreblade, a Broadsword/Dark Armor scrapper, and that was back when Dark Armor was undisputedly the worst defense set in the game. As both the set was buffed and my experience with it grew, he became more powerful, and as my main, he is also the character I've invested the most in developing in terms of time and influence.

I also tend to get my Stamina prerequisites at Lv. 22 and 24, and Stamina itself at Lv. 30 as opposed to having Stamina at Lv. 20 as conventional wisdom often dictates. And if the primary or secondary set of one of my characters offers another endurance management power, I'll often take that instead of Stamina.

My video game buying habits tend to be halfway between rabid conformist and rabid non-conformist. I will rarely buy a game the day it comes out. Usually, I wait to see if it generates any kind of buzz. I figure if people are talking about it, it has some merit, at least. Then I wait until that buzz dies down a bit so I can save money by getting a used copy.

The only people who really aren't sheeple are those who do popular things if they like them and avoid popular things if they don't like them. In other words they make up their own minds. Those who deliberately avoid things that are popular specifically because they are popular aren't making up their own minds. They are still letting the masses of trend followers make up their mind for them. They just run in the other direction in some misguided effort to believe that nobody can dictate their actions when it's actually exactly the opposite. Their actions are completely predetermined by those lemmings that they seek to distance themselves from.

This.

I used to think this way, but eventually decided that it was a ridiculous posture. Choosing to avoid something because it's popular (which, hilariously, is a popular stance - especially in music) is just as silly as choosing to flock to something because it's popular. You're still conforming, you're just conforming with the nonconformists.

Better to evaluate things on their own merits on a case-by-case basis, and leave 'popularity' out of the equation, IMO.

Is posting on this thread a popular thing? Or does it take having 4 or 5 (or more) pages before a thread gets popular?

I mean, I don't want to reply unless it's the popular thing to do.

This thread is so popular, I'm only posting in it to be ironic.

I don't avoid popular powersets, missions, etc., but I do shy away from new ones for some time until I feel the bugs/glitches/hax have been adjusted. It's my entertainment money, and I want to have some idea of what I'm paying for.

I dont care about the FOTM (except in one case, see bellow). I actually am always trying strange combinations that are rare...

My current strange build is Earth/TA Troller... Its 44 right now, and its really nice to play, with dozens of location powers...

And the FOTM that I avoid is the Fire/Kin. There is so many of then all around that I would feel weird creating one (and they are both sets I love, so I had to twist then a bit... Ice/Kin and Fire/FF) ... Everything else is fair play...

I still haven't made a Shield toon because its still so shiny.
I just now made a pistol character because they hype is dying down. I won't make shields because everyone makes shields.

Also I liked Spoon and Modest Mouse before they got all popular.

And I don't watch TV because I don't have to be like everyone else.

I vote for third party candidates.

Yeah I came to terms with being an indie 20-something awhile ago.

Do Fire/Sonic. It's sweet.

If something is really hyped or FOTM I'll avoid it like the plague. Even if it's something I've looked forward to.

I refused to watch any Harry Potter movies until the hysteria died down. Then I of course fell in love with the series.

I was still rocking my pager in 2000, refusing to give in and get a cellphone. Now I can't live without one.

I think it boils down to me not wanting to be sheeple. I don't wanna be someone doing something just because everyone else is. Even when it's something I might enjoy.
Just can't stand being a clone I guess. So I'll wait and let the newness go away, wait until everyone stops gushing over something, then in the shadows I'll watch it, or I roll one up, and ask myself why I waited.

Anyone else avoid bandwagons like me?
If something is super hyped I avoid it like the plague....just saw 300 this week for the first time...have not and probably will never watch Harry Potter or Avatar...I am the same way with music...I will usually never listen to cds that are hyped until after they drop back down the charts...

My biggest issue is when you have liked something long before it became the FOTM and are considered a band wagon jumper...for example I am a huge Pittsburgh Penguins fan and have been since 1985...I live 2 hours from where Sidney Crosby was born...last year every store I went to and looked at Penguins merchandise treated me I was a band wagon jumper....I had to start quoting stats from the 1985 season to silence them...LOL

"A great love is alot like a good memory. When it's there and you know it's there, but it's just out of your reach. It can be all that you think about. You can focus on it and try to force it but the more you do, the more you seem to push it away. But if you're patient and hold still...maybe...just maybe...it will come to you. I guess for me what it boils down to is perception.
Like Fallen said, I'd be percieved as just another person thats not capable of making up their own mind. Even if the reality is I judged it on merits and not hype. The perception from the outside crowd is still there.

Like most have mentioned though. It doesn't really matter. Do what you want and let others think what they will. I was just curious to see if I was alone in that line of thinking. While not alone, certainly a minority.

Is an interesting study in sociology when you think about it. How individuals react to the same situations.

I'm sure you're not the only person like this, but I certainly don't do it. I couldn't care less if there are 1000 other people running around doing the same thing as me. If it's fun, or it's useful, then I'll gladly be number 1,001.
