"Your Mentor is out of range..."

Running with a lowbie friend in PI last night, I faceplanted, and had a split-second of "can't hosp, my SK will be toast", before snapping back to the present.

It was the first time I had REALLY thought about it since the introduction of the SSK system...remember what a pain in the *** that mechanic was? Praying for a conscientious Mentor? Getting too far away from the SK/Mentor and seeing that annoying popup?

DO
NOT
MISS.

LOVE
SSK.

SO
MUCH.

That was why I tried to pawn the sidekick off on someone else whenever possible. Not that I was worried about them dying (I never hosp in the middle of a battle and it's up to the sidekick to keep up, as far as I'm concerned) but because I couldn't turn the warnings off. It's also why I avoided being sidekicked like the plague, what with the mentors who couldn't keep up, kept stopping to chat, kept going afk...

SSK is the greatest thing ever.

Here here. SSK is one of the best updates this game has ever had. Playing with your friends and getting a group together is so effortless now, and I love it!

Agreed. SSK was a genius move.

So true. One of my favorite QoL additions to the game.

I'm happy that SSK removed that mechanic because my account was bugged and none of my characters would ever get that message displayed (it used to work, I don't recall the first time I noticed it was gone).

Little more to add other than /sign

SSK was a great innovation for teaming.

Teaming used to be easy. Now it's painless as well

I recall the extra aggravation of having your pets all die if you were a mastermind and moved out of range. And having to resummon and rebuff, and hoping that you finished before your mentor got out of range again or having them irritated by you as they stand around while you do so.

No, I don't miss that.

Yeah, I don't miss SK scrabble, either. One thing I always tried to do was pair up a sidekick with a mentor of the same AT or, failing that, a mentor of an AT that would usually be at the same range. So a Scrapper sidekick would go with a Tanker or Scrapper mentor to ensure both sidekick and mentor would be in melee, and Blaster sidekick would go with a Controller, Defender or Blaster mentor for the same reason.

It's a bit disconcerting now that you can leave your mentor alone in a zone 20 levels over his natural level while you're on the other end of the world shopping, but that little hickup is quickly lost to the happiness of no having to worry about staying in range and ESCORTING PEOPLE OVER FIVE ZONES! Screw that! Now sidekicks can escort themselves, and I am very happy about this

My only complaint with the SSK system is that it is mandatory.

I generally didn't mind the idea of "taking a lowbie under your wing" so to speak and having a leash distance. If it had had about 4x the range it probably would have been something that could have continued indefinitely.

SSK is definitely much better system overall though.

Well, at least that spares us from having to talk and argue about it every time someone joins a team. "Hey what form of sidekicking do you want?" "Huh?" "Tell him, Bob." "Well, there's two kinds of sidekicking." "Oh? What's the difference?" "Old-style sidekicking is leeching!" "SSK sucks, you dweeb!"

At least SSK is just click-and-go.

omg ... yes I remember those messages spamming the chat window *shudders*
SSK really was a great change ... it seemed to be a small thing at first, but in retrospective it's one of the best game updates ever, imho.

SSK is amazing! I hated having the tetris thing going when forming a team...oooops we gota stop because bill lost his mentor and now he can not play with us! or some silly crap like that. SSK is an amazing addition to this game.

Oh, and all the negotiations required just to play with your SG...."We're 35, got anything in that range?" "I have a 36 Brute." "We already have two brutes, we need some support. Anybody have some support in the mid-30s?" "I have a 27 Rad/Rad." "Now we're out of mentors." "Hang on, I'll go see if I have anything that level..." and on and on.

Now it's more "We're 35, what do you feel like playing?"
