New to CoH, LF Friends!

I've been playing the free trial this past week, and have decided to upgrade to full game within the next couple of days. I've really enjoyed being in Teams running missions or just having fun, and am now looking to find a SG that has members who like to team up for whatever (missions, raids, PvP, it's all in good fun!).
I have been playing on Protector, but am willing to start a character on any server (my highest level is only Lv 11, I'm not very far yet).

If anyone is willing to put up with some newbie with alot of questions and willingness to play the game (I'm planning on being in game at least a couple hours per day as I can be atm) let me know. I've played a couple heroes, but made a villain and am really enjoying that too, but either works for me atm to learn how to play the game!

My global handle is @Starlight Nova (I believe- my first character) or reply here with suggestions/offers and I'll check it while I'm installing fullgame!

Thank you all who've welcomed me so far, you are truly an awesome group of players!

There are lots of Super Groups and lots of communities in City of Heroes. You might want to look around or try out a few Super Groups. Different groups are best for different people. There are lots of ways to play City of Heroes and you can usually find a group that fits your style. Personally, I'm in lots of global channels as well as having a great SG (really network) that I play with regularly.

Global channels are where people can chat via anyone else in that global channel regardless of what server they are on (though Euro/NA are separate). This link is semi-outdated but you can find some global channels and see if there are any people you like or learn what type of people you like.

Some things to keep in mind when looking for a SG/Group are:
Role-Playing
How much end-game focused
Farming/Power Leveling
Speed Running TFs
Generic beating stuff up
PvP
Time-Zone/Peak play time *EDIT*<<< This one is super important.

*EDIT* The Repeat Offenders (RO) Network, which I'm a part of, may be something you might want to try out. Generally, the RO Network is on 3 Servers (Freedom/Justice/Virtue) is for people who like to team, like to shoot stuff, and like to buff. RO is not about farming/power leveling, and not focused on pvp though what you do outside of the network, on your own, is up to you (meaning you can do all those things but simply don't discuss/invite people to them from RO Channels/SG stuff). RO is friendly to new players and doesn't believe in "we need a tank" or "we need a healer" or things like that. We just get together, form a team, and shoot stuff. The name "Offenders" comes from people who like to play Defenders in an Offensive manner. All archetypes are welcome.

Hey there!

Our SG is small, but friendly, and we are always willing to help new folks get to know the game. Give me (@Thirty7) or my SG's co-owner @Vincent Marcone a shout. We aren't on all the time, but at least once a day, usually. I'm from MI, and am on most often from about 7:30pm or so until about 10:30 or 11 nightly, and then most of the day on Friday and Saturday.

If you really like the protector people you should head down to the server forums and say hi there. They can tell you what global channels are best for finding teams and help you find a SG/VG. If you happen to be on Justice some time give me a shout and I'll help you out or just run around beatin on things with ya.

Welcome to the game! If you're on Protector, then I suggest you join our global TF/SF & badging channels: Protector Watch and Protector TFs. We also have a global channel for new players to ask questions, get guidance, etc., which is N P C(spaces included).

You can do so simply by typing in the following command:

/chan_join channelname

Feel free to look me up in-game. My global is the same as my forum name.

FYI, the game tells you your global name every time you log in. You might have to scroll back in the global tab, but its in there.

Fortunately for you... you already have the full game installed!

The client used by the trial is exactly the same as the client used by the full game. The only difference is a flag on your account which says whether you're subject to the trial restrictions or not. (Though sometime this month, Issue 17 is supposed to come out, which requires an update to everyone's client.) As a newbie, I highly recommend checking out Paragonwiki. Then bookmark it. Then love it

These boards also have a Supergroup & Villaingroup Recruitment forum, where you may be able to find some great SGs on Protector. I'm sorry, but I don't have any characters there myself, so I can't make a personal recommendation. I'm in Repeat Offenders[/shameless plug] with Smurphy; we've got more than 30 different SGs on Freedom/Virtue/Justice, and a global chat channel to talk to each other across servers

Maybe it's time for RO to branch out to Protector...

Hey Starlight Nova, welcome to the game.

Glad you're enjoying your time on protector. I would also recommend the slightly more populated servers if you think your comp can handle the load.

Virtue: This Server is the second largest and considered the unofficial RP server. It also has one of the best communities of any server and the most active when it comes to raiding. ((I'm bias, I love this server because of its community.))

Freedom: For farming, grinding and PvPing. Not a very healthy community or beginner friendly server but if you enjoy farming, grinding and PvP this server is for you.

Disclaimer* PvP is a completely different system and set of rules from PvE. We don't know why the developers did this, but they say it was to make PvP more fun for new players... ^_^?

Welcome

(shameless plug)
We have a fairly active group on Pinnacle (a lower pop server, but still decent teaming) called the Lethal Ladies. Check us out and register at LethalLadies.Guildportal.com.

Outside of that, I will personally be glad to help you out with any questions, missions, anything you have. My globals are @Neuronia and @Neuronium and I'll send you a global friend invite as soon as I am on. To find your global friend tab, just click "Friends" then use the tab to "Global Friends" and you'll see a name. That name can be used to communicate with that person anywhere on any server.

Try all the archetypes, explore around, have fun!

Questions about the game, either side? /t @Neuronia or @Neuronium, with your queries!

Welcome, Astral!

Each server has its own little community. I spend most of my time on Guardian, but have Infinity, Pinnacle and Protector full of characters. One way to connect with folks is to go on the server-specific boards down below. Introduce yourself and ask to meet up with folks in game. Most of the people who frequent the boards tend to be better players -- and with occasional exceptions for when somebody is in a bad mood, mostly friendly folks.

Also, most servers have a main channel used for general chatter, finding teams and filling Task Forces/Strike forces. Look in the server-specific boards and they can lead you to those channels.

Finally, the best thing is to build up a good Global Friends list. When you team with someone you like, ask to add them to your Global Friends list. The keep an eye out for that person for the next opportunity to team with him or her. You may be able to find a regular team that way. I have been teaming with the same group of 3 other guys for nearly 4 years. We have had others join us for a while and then leave, but the 4 of us get on voice chat and have a great time. Those great guys are the main reason I have stayed with this game for so long.

LOCAL MAN! The most famous hero of all. There are more newspaper stories about me than anyone else. "Local Man wins Medal of Honor." "Local Man opens Animal Shelter." "Local Man Charged with..." (Um, forget about that one.)

Took until the 13th post for a Freedom hater to show.

All the servers are good. See the double paren Tokyo wrote in, on Virtue that means they are speaking out of character.

There is virtually no difference between Freedom and Virtue besides the RP. And while the (( people aren't bad at all, some will not come out of character and their character is a tough guy, so they treat you badly. [for an example, look in the blue side bar in Pocket-D at night, but that is not typical of the friendly people in CoX].

But Virtue's good. Freedom's good. Smaller servers are good. You are, however, on the smallest of the small.

Welcome, and katana/wp ftw!

I'm @postagulous. On Freedom and/or Virtue pretty much every night. Though tomorrow, first Tuesday of the month, is Tanker Tuesday on Justice [near IP gate in KR]. It's the only organized event I take part in. Nothing like doing mishs/TFs with 8 tanks in a team. Wooo.

Not really. Freedom just has more of everything (except RPers, who focused themselves on Virtue). Freedom has more players, more PvPers, more nice people, more ********, more catgirls, more hideous mutant cthulhu worshipers... more everything.

I think we have fewer all black costumes with the chain wrap all over than others. On Liberty it was like a convention of them.

Eh, don't know about the cat girls. I would say Virtue does.

But yeah, Freedom has generally the same "Noise to Signal" ratio as other servers, it's just that a greater population means greater absolute Noise levels.

Because no one has mentioned it, when you view the server list the top most one will be the last server you had logged in to, immediately followed by the 'currently' least active, down to the most active.

Now, it was mentioned that Protector is the 'smallest server', that does not translate to 'least active'. It's usually in the top three (list-wise,) but I've also seen it hovering down in the middle of the pack, and as far down as 4th (from the bottom.)

It really depends on whats going on.

This is absolutely true. Protector has a very active and tight-knit community. And to be honest, outside of Freedom & Virtue, the population difference between the rest of the servers is negligible. They are all about the same. The difference really comes down to what kind of community each server has.

Every time I read a post on the forum by someone complaining about 'dead' servers, I always shake my head. I can't recall a time where I wasn't able to find something to do on Protector.

Regardless of the server you end up playing on, I suggest you sign up for the Mentor Project (see the link in my signature).

We have mentors available on Protector, Justice, Virtue, Freedom, Triumph, and Pinnacle. In any event, take a look and see if it's something you could benefit from.

Oh! That makes sense, Protector was top of the list when I first started game, just stuck with it. There have been times where its been shy on seeing other players, but so far it has not been too bad. I am going to pick up Virtue, as there have been a great many offers to help me learn if I were to have a character on that server, so I'll try that when I have a few days off work

Thanks all for the welcome and great information, it's much appreciated!
