the Squirrel Girl Effect

Squirrel Girl - she's an abberation. She was created as a joke and yet, the moment any serious comicbook gets hold of her, she gets to blow minds. She's one of the few Marvel characters that have seriously (in CoX parlance) solo'd Dr Doom. She went from a parody to somebody that nobody knows quite what to do with because she's crossed that line into serious - something that the original Marvel parody Howard the Duck never achieved.

That's where I'm kinda coming from and a few threads recently have inspired me in this post. I've been known to try some odd stuff in the past. I know I'm not unique, and that stuff that would cause most "sane" players to look at you askance and say "Whut?!?!?" gets some of us, with a penchent for oddities, juices flowing.

These are some of the mad things I've tried so far:

Taking Superspeed as a travel power and never getting your feet wet.

Attempting to get to level 50 without ever being defeated (I've tried that 3 times and never gotten past level 30)

Various Duo/Trio combos for TFs, just to see "if it can be done" - we've got a new 'Trio of Doom' outfit - red side - that looks like it can do somewhere, but of course the proof of the pudding is completing the LGSF, the ITF and the LRSF (and once we've done that, then the Mo versions)

Coin tried a very interesting experiment with (IIRC) Turtleman who was so sluggish he never actually got to level up. That was in the day before SSK and his stirling effort got only so far then stalled because he was so zone restricted as a level 1 toon in a world of highbies. SSK may make it possible (and I also don't recall the exact details of his challenge so I offer appologies if I misconstrue - but regardless, it's a great challenge.)

Personally, I love "odd ball" builds and teams. I like to play as far "outside of the norm" as possible (but still being team friendly) - and given the recent thread by someone ranting about a fellow team member sans expectation I wondered what other mad plans you have considered and implemented?

I'd also love to see suggestions for odd teams - composition and individual AT structure.

Get weird and get out here!

Look for the Iron Eagles supergroup (I think they've got a thread in the Events forum). The entire supergroup is 'debt = delete'.

As a huge Top Gear fan, I was delighted to get the name Captain Slow on Triumph (don't worry, it's not copyrighted; just the nickname of one of the presenters). He's a kin. With no speed boost. Because really, that would make no sense at all.

AR/dev blapper. Because you can't be gadget Batman in-game, other than Safeguard side mission temp powers. No (or almost no)AR powers, not taking gundrone. I am considering M-80 grenade and Ignite just to have one explosive and/or ignite for "distraction". Otherwise, it's all fighting pool and /dev and vet powers I can muster. Probably going to take one or two leadership powers or maybe the Presence Pool for the Fears. Using Flight, mostly because of Air Superiority and he seemed like he should have some sort of travel power. At the time, we didn't have Ninja Run.

Note: I don't inflict him on anyone without telling them first. Also, stick primarily to radio missions and try to solo default setting. So far, up to 22 and he's doing relatively well.

Ha, there needs to be "The Stig". Some say he comes from another world and is powered by our sun. Others say he once goosed Valkyre and blamed it on Positron. All we know is... he's called The Stig.

I have an alt character that I planned to create as a project at levelling.

Power Pool Gal.

After level 6 only taking powers from the power pools or patron power pools, she's currently level 13, went with elec/elec Brute because elec gets two fairly decent attacks from the off and also gets it's smashing/lethal resistance toggle at first level.

This was the time when the AE farming was in full swing, so the main rule was 'no farming of any kind, teams allowed but not an AE team, one of the other rule was 'complete the Cap Au Strikeforce before hitting level 20'.

I've had her since before the forum merger and she's got a lot of inf on her that I can't transfer away from her (one of the rules is that she earns what she earns, no help from any of my characters...she got really lucky and managed to get some of the more expensive low level IO recipes early on) and I've not had the heart to give up just yet.

I actually worked out a build in mids for her. Because she could take so many pool powers she actually ended up, once IO'd out, pretty dang good on the survivability stakes.

I still think the best part about Squirrel Girl is that her official power ranks are maxed in all categories.

I made a Sonic/Dev Blapper.

No. Seriously. Brawl, Sands of Mu, Air Superiority, and Jump Kick. Blapper.

She was actually pretty impressive, all things considered!

Haha, still my favorite is getting the Petless Mastermind to 50. Oh, and getting the killshot on Lord Recluse.

One thing that freaked many people out was getting Jump Kick, Combat Jumping, and Acrobatics. Some complained cause I didn't have a travel power. Others had no idea you could even DO that.

Um, with She-Hulk? Yeah, it's probably safer to wait.

Actually, with all the peoples she's known, it's probably safer to just not.

Using this guide as a template I made an AR/Ice Blaster. I played him only in PUGs and he's currently at 28. Someday I hope to finish with him. His build:

I made a character on Freedom who I decided would only gain experience via Sewer Runs.... but... due to a combination of me absolutely hating the server, and having far more fun characters to play... he is languishing after his first run at level 6ish.

His name? Sewer Breath.

Squirrel Girl is in fact part of the great Squirrel World Domination Conspiracy.

I used to fiddle with my back feet music for a black onyx. My entire room absorbed every echo. The music was . . . thud like. The music was . . . thud like. I usually played such things as rough-neck and thug. Opaque melodies that would bug most people. Music from the other side of the fence.

How do you guys take Patrol XP into account? Do you delete only upon real debt or anything you should gain debt if you had no patrol xp?

I don't know for sure, I've never joined Iron Eagles. I think it's any instance where you would earn debt since patrol XP was added. I think they count Self Destruction, too, even though you don't get debt from it (the SG existed before SD). I'm not sure about things like dropships during a Rikti invasion, though.

I've been known to take Hover and Air Superiority together, just because the two handed hammer down animation while floating looks awesome (and Fly doesn't quite do it due to end cost and inertia).

As far as wackiness, Ice/Fire blapper with no Stamina and near-capped defenses /flex.

Team Teleport 6-slotted on a scrapper, back when ED didn't exist (So. Much. Fun.)

Can't think of anything else noteworthy, other than soloing the ITF with a DM/Inv scrapper (without resorting to the non-fluffy Rommy trick, all AVs at once!). Lost the record of most AVs defeated at once (Khaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaan! I mean, Nihiliiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii! )

The Total Focus animation looks really cool while flying, too. It's the main reason my Rad/Dark has TF, because I Hover through battle, and the flying TF animation kicks ***.

The Iron Eagles were inspired by on Diablo 2's "Hardcore" mode, where death permanently grayed out the character and made the entire character unplayable (and equipment lost). It's not really debt that bothers us -- it's defeat.

The rules we play by are similarly hardcore -- any defeat, even if it's not your fault, equals "death" and results in the character leaving the group (you can theoretically play the character on your own time as if he/she had never been killed, of course, but not as an Eagle. Many players just delete their Eagles when they die.) This includes things like if you zone into an outdoor zone during a Zombie invasion, or you have someone's higher-level ambush spawn on top of you, and other such awful things. Unfair deaths (particularly lag-induced fatalities) were a staple of Diablo 2 hardcore as well, and it bred a certain bitter pride into us.

Yes, it's crazy and can be heartbreaking.

It also adds some excitement to COH. In a world where death usually just means clicking one inspiration and taking a knee, the Iron Eagles will sometimes get your blood going a little faster. Also, when was the last time you heard anyone say "Fall back!" as enemies pressed in on the team? When was the last time you really, really appreciated a defensive buff?
