"But in our enthusiasm, we could not resist a radical overhaul of the system, in which all of its major weaknesses have been exposed, analyzed, and replaced with new weaknesses."
-- Bruce Leverett, Register Allocation in Optimizing Compilers
This one breaks if you get one of the missions in Talos that are on the islands to the north, unless you use the 'complete this mission' escape to finish it without actually going there. You do cut yourself off from some badges, though.

Did you forget that you can get a Raptor Pack at any time now for a paltry 10,000 inf?
I love this thread!
Hmm, you know, I don't have that many odd things I've done with power sets yet... yet. I mean, I have characters with no travel powers, but that's not that big of a deal.
My big ol' Amazing Ape tank has a terrible disliking of water and freezes in front of those damn puddle-filled cave hallways. Slowly trying to muster the courage to figure a way to work around it... Moving along the edges and doing everything to stay dry (Damn those low ceilings!).
I did create a character that, as soon as I started playing them (On an alt server to try out the look and the powerset) I just knew they had to always run backwards. Everywhere I went, I position the character and camera to run backwards (It's fun using the S key to move towards everything...).
Unfortunately, I didn't stick with the character and make them on my main server... at least, not yet. That wasn't due to this though, just other characters and lack of time and interest in the concept, currently.
Anyways...
AR/dev blapper. Because you can't be gadget Batman in-game, other than Safeguard side mission temp powers. No (or almost no)AR powers, not taking gundrone. I am considering M-80 grenade and Ignite just to have one explosive and/or ignite for "distraction". Otherwise, it's all fighting pool and /dev and vet powers I can muster. Probably going to take one or two leadership powers or maybe the Presence Pool for the Fears. Using Flight, mostly because of Air Superiority and he seemed like he should have some sort of travel power. At the time, we didn't have Ninja Run.
Note: I don't inflict him on anyone without telling them first. Also, stick primarily to radio missions and try to solo default setting. So far, up to 22 and he's doing relatively well. |
Not to make a Batman or anything... But I am going to play around with Mids and see what I might like to try!
And... I just started reading that AR/Ice Guide... HAHA... Wow, this is great so far...

Anyone ever try to RP a claustrophobic? Not necessarily so bad that they won't go into caves, but bad enough that they won't get on elevators? I think this would be ultimately unplayable, but I'm curious if anyone has ever tried.

My next planned project once I start playing again (once I get back from this work trip) will actually be to play a character that ONLY stays outside. NO door missions, PERIOD.
So either the patrol missions, hunting on the street, or the Defeat X missions. Basically treat the instanced nature of CoH as if it doesn't exist and treat the game like any other "standard" MMO.
Should be interesting... I wonder if anyone would be interested in a thread detailing the progress or not...
Will you do instanced train missions? Or any other outdoor instances?
If they are instances, I won't do them. There must always be the chance that I could have my target "kill-stolen".
I think that would be pretty easily doable, Westley. Mechanically, anyway, might not be the most interesting way to the top, what with no story at all, but doable.
My only character of this nature, and it's nowhere near as extreme, is a Necro/Dark MM who melees along with her zombies. She has AS, Boxing, and Kick, none of the ranged attacks. She does use her Dark debuffs of course, and the heal. I liked the idea of a voodoo priestess who gets in and punches people rather than staying back and directing. Just level 16 though, I have other characters I like better.

Its no longer ideal today, but I don't think anything has changed about the game to make it a non-viable strategy. I just haven't really heard about anyone trying to do it in years. If anything, there are additional opportunities for target-rich environments, things like Sirens hotspots for example.

What's old is new again, and considered novel. Funny how that works.

His purpose is to collect every exploration badge he can without ever gaining any xp. I need to dust him off again and go after the hazard zone badges that he can access now.

I don't have a claustrophobic character, but I've got Agoraphobic Man. He's not actually a hero; he has access to the mediport system because he's an outpatient on an experimental therapy for a congenital immune system defect. He grew up in a plastic bubble and is terrified of the outdoors...so he's trying to desensitize himself by exploring the city. The only powers he uses are Sprint and his bubble (PFF).

I'm sorry to inform you that that concept is doomed. There are exploration badges in the PvP zones, Midnighter Club, Cimerora, and Ourburritos. Those zones are still level locked (Not sure if you can get access to the Midnighter Club by being teamed with someone else on the arc, but the others are definitely locked out). So if you want him to get them all, he will have to reach the appropriate levels. And that means earning XP.

TOGGLE MAN is on Freedom server. This is because he's nearly unplayable, so I needed a wealth of teams so crappy and disorganized that nobody would notice how awful he was until I'd already leeched a big heap of EXP. Teams that are good enough to know what a crappy character TOGGLE MAN is are usually so amused by the idea that they let me stick around anyway, though.
TOGGLE MAN is currently level 42!
These are his planned powers (he is a Spines/Dark Armor Scrapper):
Spines: Lunge and Quills. Lunge is unslotted and unused.
Dark armor: Everything but Dark Regeneration and Soul Transfer, all of it run 100% of the time!!!! Extreme!!!!!
Leaping: TOGGLE MAN'S only regret is that he can't run Super Jump, Combat Jumping and Ninja Run simultaneously.
Concealment: Stealth, Invisibility and Phase Shift. Ok, TOGGLE MAN has a second regret, I guess. That Phase Shift shuts off after 30 seconds. It's like it doesn't really want to be a toggle or something. And a third regret: That Stealth and Invisibility are also incompatable. Why can't you all just get along, toggles?! TOGGLE MAN loves you all equally!!!
Fighting: Boxing, Tough and Weave. Boxing is like lunge, unslotted, unused, unwanted and unloved.
Leadership: Maneuvers, Assault and Tactics.
Body mastery: Focused Accuracy.
TOGGLE MAN can run 21 toggles at once (including Rest). TOGGLE MAN needs to have Rest active to run all his toggles though, even with them all slotted to the ED softcap on endred. TOGGLE MAN has no plans to take powers at 47 or 49, because there are no other toggles available. TOGGLE MAN once considered Conserve Power and Physical Perfection as his last two powers, because holy crap are all these toggles tiring, but rejected them as unacceptably inferior. An empty slot is better than a slot with non-toggle powers in it, because TOGGLE MAN IS HARDCORE!!!!!!
Edit: The forums won't let me post in all caps! I guess that's good... but... well... TOGGLE MAN does not approve of this forced detoggling of his capslock key. AHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!

Eisenzahn. I love you. Marry me.
That was hilarious.
The closest thing I have to this is Your Friendly CFI. FF/NRG Defender. Shields put off for KB powers. Everything KB power triple slotted for KB. She wants to teach the villains of Paragon City how to fly.
I may switch her to a Grav/FF instead, because Wormhole.
I also made a secondary build for my Ice/Storm Controller that has every KB capable power pool ability and runs Hurricane and Whirlwind at the same time. Everything is slotted for KB, and if you haven't seen Jump Kick slotted for KB, it's hilarious.
I've flung a war wolf from one end of Striga to the other on her.

PPD & Resistance Epic Archetypes
AGES ago I made an empath defender that took as FEW of his primaries as I could. He was a very poor healer. Named him "Major HMO." anyone asking for a rez was just told, "sorry, that's not covered by your plan."
My wife's counterpart character was a very nearsighted fire/fire blaster focusing on melee (this was before fire scrappers) that didn't slot a SINGLE accuracy enhancement. Was called "Retinal Burns"

I hunt in zones most of the time these days. I've gotten tired of the same 5 indoor map types over and over and over... But I do missions or join teams on occasion. One thing I do is try to get defeat badges while I can still get XP/rewards from the mobs. I've completed that task with several badges but not all of them, I do however get a fair way towards some of them. Perez Park is a great zone for several defeat badges.
How will you get to Cimerora?
The rules we play by are similarly hardcore -- any defeat, even if it's not your fault, equals "death" and results in the character leaving the group (you can theoretically play the character on your own time as if he/she had never been killed, of course, but not as an Eagle. Many players just delete their Eagles when they die.) This includes things like if you zone into an outdoor zone during a Zombie invasion, or you have someone's higher-level ambush spawn on top of you, and other such awful things. Unfair deaths (particularly lag-induced fatalities) were a staple of Diablo 2 hardcore as well, and it bred a certain bitter pride into us.
Yes, it's crazy and can be heartbreaking.
It also adds some excitement to COH. In a world where death usually just means clicking one inspiration and taking a knee, the Iron Eagles will sometimes get your blood going a little faster. Also, when was the last time you heard anyone say "Fall back!" as enemies pressed in on the team? When was the last time you really, really appreciated a defensive buff?
