so this weekend isn't i17 / wth ?
For the record I'm questioning the timming of 2xp weekend before the issue drops. I disagree with the 2 contact marketing theory. At this point we aren't growing our player base. Anyone who reactivates for this weekend have already had contact with our game.
I think this game got the better of the dev teams with the Cryptic/Ncsoft split. I would want their hard work to payoff. With Champions stumbling hard and DCUO starting to ramp up it's social marketing this is the perfect time to show off the new bells and whistles in City.
The problem with 2XP weekends right when the Issue Drops is the unexpected wide scale bugs that frequently crop up upon Issue releases.
If you going to have an open house do you do it after you have time to clean up or do you have it first thing after a wild party?

Update, I just saw at least 3 people back for the weekend spontaneously say they were excited about I17 and considering re-upping either when it hits, or the end of this weekend.
So if I'm an out of touch fanboy, at least I'm an out of touch fanboy who's correct.

Double XP weekends of the recent past:
Jul 18-20, 2008 * DXP Weekend
Jan 23-25, 2009 * DXP Weekend
Jul 31-Aug 2, 2009 * DXP Weekend
Oct 9-12, 2009 * Extended DXP Weekend plus Reactivation
Mar 4-7, 2010 * Extended DXP Weekend plus Reactivation
Anyone else see a trend forming? Not to worry. Best guess would be that the next DXP Weekend (with possible Reactivation) being around the last week of this July. Which would either put it at launch of GR or two to three weeks after. If so, then many of the most obnoxious Bugs will probably be squashed (hopefully). What about a double xp week, for us fools who have to work all weekends and have more time during the week. How about that?

Hmm didn't this start on Thursday? which, unless they changed it is not part of the weekend
I work weekends as well but it is what it is, and to add,
I think they have been very cool about all of this, exstending the transfers further and getting an issue out before GR to be honest I think they are kicking azz, Concidering Champions and STOL coming out from the competitors to me they have more than answered the bell

Now, I am excited about I17 and it does have some nice QoL features. Although, I highly doubt that most people who have left the game for whatever reason will rush back saying: "Wow, I can hold 7 missions instead of 3 now, I gotta resub."

Although I will say I've seen at least one person mention that being able to email Inf and Items is bringing them back.

The point of 2xp weekend, as I understand it, is to make the existing players happy. As far as I'm concerned, it worked like a charm. The point of a reactivation weekend is to show off new stuff to former players, to entice them to rejoin. Dual pistols counts as new stuff. So does ninja run for people who have been gone a little longer. Depending on how long someone has been gone, there could be a whole bunch of new stuff for them to see this weekend.
One common reason I've heard people give when complaining about this game is the overall graphics. I don't get it, personally, but I do hear it sometimes. So I imagine that the devs will want to show off Ultramode. In fact, I think I17 will be a perfect excuse for a reactivation weekend, and I hope they consider having another one once the issue is finished and the bugs are squashed.

OP goes into a restaurant and orders a steak. Soon afterward, the waiter brings the steak and informs the OP that the steak is free. "Not only that, sir. But later I'll bring our a free slice of cake for you."
"Not good enough!" says the OP, shaking his tiny fist in the air. "I want my free cake now. Bring it out and put it on top of my steak!" |
For those who are returning for the free weekend, it's underwhelming to find the game in the same condition as when you left. It's also true that since people that quit are (presumably) not going to be quite as optimistic, then what reason do they really have to go digging around for extra information on what's coming up?
More players means more money to the devs, which means better business and a better chance for more updates. I don't understand why so, SO many people in the CoH community are so unwilling to take criticism that, yes, we do in fact do things wrong from time to time. Fine, that's normal, but can we PLEASE learn from it?
Again, someone is misrepresenting the situation. Saying that information is taxing to find, and saying that people won't be happy with the state of the game enough to pay, doesn't make it true, by any stretch.
This is a social game. People talk. Most of the chatter I've seen over the last few weeks in teams and channels has been about the stuff that just got here or is on it's way in the near future. People who come back to the game for a visit but can't be motivated enough to talk to the people who stayed, frankly deserve what they get. Which is false impressions of how things are.

I don't understand why you're criticizing his post though. He may have come off as harsh by slinging around the term Fanboy, but what he said is perfectly true.

And as far as "not as optimistic," i say you're making another assumption as to why the person quit in the first place. Maybe they were in school (I know we have a few who quit while they went to college, resub over the summer, etc.) or were sent overseas. Maybe they lost a job, and are coming back now that they have a steady income. Maybe they quit over the i13 PVP changes. Maybe they personally didn't like Jack. There's many reasons for someone to quit, and assuming they'd all be "not as optimistic" is - well, assuming a lot.
Much as the OP is, along with making unrealistic statements and having unrealistic expectations - especially when he's posting on the forum, where not too far above this one it mentions I17 JUST going into beta.
Besides, it's not as if 2xp weekends are rare. Maybe not as common as "One or two a month" like Aion's been doing (and talk about overkill there,) but it's not exactly a once a year thing either.
Not sure about that...
Now, that would depend on when they left, wouldn't it? They could be coming back after two months - in which case, not much change - or two years, in which case they have a lot to catch up on. |
Asking an existing customer base, particularly long-time customers, isn't usually very helpful for purposes of marketing to new or former customers. Some of you are thinking like CoH vets, not like someone who hasn't played in a long time. Frankly, I think the timing was perfect. Someone who has been away from the game isn't going to have a clue about Issue 17 or what's involved in it or probably even Going Rogue. They wouldn't come back for 4 days "just" for Issue 17 anyway. Get them back to the game for 4 days with their free re-activation and get them involved again and exposed to info about upcoming features and releases. That's how you entice them to stick around beyond the 4 days. Plus, they gave early access to DP because they knew they'd lock in a certain amount of pre-orders for Going Rogue with people wanting to take advantage of playing DP toons for double XP weekend and given the number of all-DP teams I ended up on, I'd say that worked for them pretty well.
New Issue dropping is too important to also drop a 2xp weekend on top of it. The potential for bad impressions from a buggy issue are too great, if you're trying to attract old subs back. They'll never do it, and they shouldn't.
Look for a free invite couple weeks after I17 drops (no double xp) if they do another one before Going Rogue.
OP needs to read the forums more, or he'd never have asked in the first place.
