That's until you realize that as spiders, they're incapable of snuggling. They are, instead, attempting to conquer and devour their mother.

Wait, really? Do we actually know that? (I'm asking with genuine interest. I want to learn science)

This states they live on their mother's back until they can hunt, so I can only assume that means they live on her back until they figure out how to eat her. Doesn't it just seem like they would?

An interesting theory. Thanks for letting me know.

This is disgusting. The spider itself isn't of the cute variety (like, say, a furry tarantula) and the "swarm of insects" on its back, especially as they move about, is basically a priority override for most people's brains to recoil. It doesn't matter if they're the cutest things, a forest of tiny living insects scurrying about is not cute.

No fire might cause area damage.

Use spray cleaner (I prefer Orange Glo) till it's choking on the fumes and drowing on the liquid. Makes for an easy clean up and pleasing scent of the affected area!

Is it just me, or is the forum filled with fellow Arachnophobes and insect-haters? If so, I'm right at home!

None of my RL friends understand my plight

(And no, Cleb, they most likely do not eat her. There are a number of predatory species, invertebrates and vertebrates alike, with young that are sheltered by their mother without consuming her. But if it makes you more secure in your image of the world to think that, who am i to stop you?)

Actually, I would say this is the rational part.

The spider obviously was not a threat, so killing the spider would motivated by fear, and be irrational. There's no reason to kill something that can't hurt you, and might actually help you by getting rid of pests.

Oh, and spiders can definitely be cute.

I admit that they're neat to look at, but only in picture format.

Don't Wolf spiders have a rotting venom kinda like brown recluses?

Wasn't the dude holding the spider without being bitten?

Necrotic venoms are just...nasty.

Those one's aren't going to eat her. They just stay there until they're a bit bigger so they are capable of catching and killing their own prey. Until that point, they hang on for the protection from predators and to mooch off her meals. The point of reproduction is to pass on ones genes... Now, there is a species of spider (of which i can't remember the name, off hand) where when the young hatch, the mother presses her abdomen against them and basically encourages them to eat her. By the time the young are finished, they're slightly bigger and have a slightly better chance of surviving.

Which is rather amazing considering Wolf spiders are known for being highly aggressive. I have been chased by Wolf spiders before, and can attest to how aggressive they can be. That guy must be some kind of spider whisperer to not have been bitten multiple times by that thing.

I tell my kids all about the useful role spiders play, blah, blah, blah. But I also tell them that their habitat is not allowed to intersect my habitat, and I enforce that with extreme prejudice.

I don't do "slow, agonizing" though. More like a swift transition from the 3D world to the 2D world, followed by an exciting water ride.

In that case, remind me not to let my infant son anywhere near you.

I'm pretty sure the people freaking out over the video weren't in danger of being bitten.

All I can say after clicking that link is *ick* oh and thanks for the constant heebie jeebies. I can handle pretty much any bug and actually volunteered at the local zoo several summers teaching children the importance of all creatures great and small but on spider day's... I was sent home.

Madagascar Hissing Cockroaches are cute and interesting, spiders *shivers* NO WAY! bleh
