CoH Updater will not finish loading

Bypassing the updater worked for me.
I have many characters in this game. Some of them are level 50.
how's that done?
crashed just now and cant get back in.
tried the stuff linked in ochos post but its not working

Somehow it doesn't work for me, bypassing the launcher gives me an english login screen (it should be french) then sends me to a server screen with only one UNNAMED server. When i try to select it, it freezes the game

I get no change in behavior at all. Still get "Connecting... #1"
Edit: I'm not a European player.

Anyone tried sending a support ticket and see what they have to say?
Bypassing the updater will get you in no problem.
I managed to log in okay about ten minutes ago.
I was logged in before, then logged out and couldn't get back in. Before I logged out, the chat servers seemed to be down, and they're also back now, so it looks like either they're having a few server problems or there's some unscheduled updating happening.

Someone else posted the answer.
Create a NEW SHORTCUT on your desktop
Look for CityOfHeroes.exe (NOT COHUPDATER.EXE), and that's the program you want a shortcut to
Modify the TARGET properties of the shortcut so that it reads
"drive:\path\CityOfHeroes.exe" -project "coh"
So for me thats
"C:\NewCoX\City of Heroes\CityOfHeroes.exe" -project "coh" -renderthread 1
for my dad it is
"c:\program files\city of heroes\cityofheroes.exe" -project "coh"
Save the settings.
Click on the shortcut.
Congratulations, you've bypassed the updater.

tried the modified shortcut as well with no joy.
*headdesk* I KNEW this trick, and had forgotten it. Worked for me, at least. Thanks for the tip.
Things to remember:
-Common sense ain't;
-Overkill is the only kill;
-If someone asks if you're a god, run away.
I was having an issue and it just worked for me. Hopefully you'll all get the same results soon.

I made the change above and got to the login screen...with both path changes i do not get a cursor(using Vista) and when i tab over after entering my credintials and password i recive the following error and have to shut the game down:
unknown auth protocol: 0
...anythoughts!

Ya just talked to a friend who logged out about an hour ago and just tried to logg in just now. He's got the same problem.
Oh wells off to bed then, hopefully the tech crew can get their crap soughted by morning.
