What about our Windows XP users ??

If you haven't already from a command prompt (run as administrator) try "ipconfig /flushdns" just in case the updater server acquired a new IP after it was updated.

-renderthread 0 would supposedly disable the multi-thread instruction and only use 1 core of your processor, instead of two. I'm not sure why you would want to do that. Your error message might be referring to that part of your instruction set.

For those of you above using -renderthread 1... it's been enabled by default for a long time now. There is no reason to use the command line anymore.

More importantly.. for anybody using the -project coh extension to skip the updater and get into the game, keep in mind you might run into trouble the next time there is a game update. You'll still have to run the Updater to update your game, so you might have to eventually fix your Updater problem anyway. It's good to be able to get in now, but it might be in your best interest to still fix it in your spare time, or else i17 is going to be released and you might not be joining in.

There is a sticky on the top of this forum by TheOcho that explains how to possibly fix it.

Hopefully though, it's just a temporary server problem from everybody updating today, and it might work just fine tomorrow.

It's possible that the multitude of people running the update at the same time this morning might be causing the "Connecting #" problem. For all we know, it'll work fine tomorrow. This is of course as long as you are not getting the "failed to rename" problem described in the stickied thread. That's a separate issue.

For now, you should still be able to bypass the updater and log in using the method explained above.

fixed mine ..in the coh folder there was a file called cohupdater.new renamed that to cohupdater.eu.exe and make sure its not set to read only. worked for me

Anyone got the same? Or even better, got past it?

EDIT:

Did this as well
http://boards.cityofheroes.com/showthread.php?t=211195

and it worked!
Logged on...but was taking ages for it to get onto the Chraracter Selection screen. It timed out, so I tried running the updater again and just got the message now...

"failed to rename C:\Program Files\CohUpdater.exe to C:\Program Files\CohUpdater.prv"

Gonna try your link...hopefully will get some positive results.

The simpliest way on XP is to rename the CohUpdater.EU.exe to just CohUpdater.exe, run it, then quit when you get the option to. Then, re-name it CohUpdater.EU.exe and it should work fine.

I'm playing on the NA servers.

I had this error Friday night when I tried to log in to the Live NA Servers ::
The updater wouldn't launch and it would crash to the crash report message screen
- which I used to report the crash.

I did this a couple of times with the same result.
I tried the Test Server and I had no problem connecting and updating.
I checked my firewall status and Coh updater and exe were both set to Allow and Allow Parent (aka Yes status).
I then when and cleared my cookies/register cleaned with Webroot.

When I launched again, Webroot started picking up CoH updater and exe trying to bypass the fire-wall. I checked allow access for both of them and at least one of them twice.
I get this error sometimes with an update and I have to set CoH updater and exe to Allow and Allow Parent (aka Yes status). Since I knoew this goes on, I went into the fire-wall settings and Allow Parent was set to Don't Allow Parent (aka No status). I reset it to Allow Parent (Yes) status.
After that I have not had a problem getting into the game.

I didn't need to rename any files.
