Discussion: Spring Fling returns for Valentine's Day!
No, the big news is that they're CHARGING you for it this time.
Oh wait. Wrong game. |
Thanks, Hyper. I needed a laugh
GG, I would tell you that "I am killing you with my mind", but I couldn't find an emoticon to properly express my sentiment.
|
As I mentioned in the post that you quoted. Even with that, why discard the existing missions, then? If they give you an alternative to obtain those things, that answers your problem without taking content away. I just ran all of my remaining characters that hadn't done it already through the Baby New Year Missions during the last Winter Event specifically to avoid having to spend my canes on things that are quicker and easier to get by running a short mission. I doubt that I'm the only one.
|
I don't know about you, but I did not find escorting that dwarf through the various obstacles to be very quick. He'd always get hung up, either in the cave or on that ridge or trees near the exit. I found it much quicker to go bid 50k per cane for the 500+ canes (each side) I needed for my characters. Heck, I even managed to turn a profit on some them when I flipped 'em right before the event ended.
The adding of Canes to the Frostlings for New Years event was a pretty good move, as it reduced the need to do the mission.
I could finish that BNY mission in about 10 minutes. I did the thing a couple hundred times this year and he only got hung up about a half-dozen times. I also did it mainly on level 14ish characters, who really don't have 25x50-75kx4 for all of the items from that mission to throw around, and certainly can't reasonably make that much in the hour it took to get the missions done.
In the end, though, "Because I don't like doing it" is not a valid reason to remove anything, especially if they give you an alternative method to get those rewards. It ends up sounding like you imposing your will on everyone else.

And they aren't giving an alternative, at least for the Valentine's Event, it's Snaptooth or nothing. IF there were an alternative, his continuing presence would be marginally acceptable.
If your character can't make the money with that character, have a higher level character with more inf buy them for you, use an intermediary (or SG base) to transfer it to the lower level character, buy as necessary.
The Winter Event & Halloween Event have at least gotten updates. What real update has Valentine's Event gotten, because I can't recall anything ATM.
Edit - People should be looking forward to events, not saying, "Him again? Call me after it's over". Sure, for people who've never dealt with him before, it's something, but lets face it. Until GR comes out, we've got an aging, relatively stable playerbase. The majority of which, I'm guessing, have seen Snappie at least once before. And if we saw Going Rogue actually Going Live before the end of summer, I would be O.O suprised.
YaY - no mass team event - Thank you!
Will get badges on new toons, grab those nifty powers and have a toga party.
In fairness, we've had new content in the halloween event and the winter event plus some have experienced new raids.
I'm not surprised there's no new content in valentines - it's an ok event for what it is and if you don't want to do it, then do some of the other content instead
Thelonious Monk
I gave you my reasons. And IMPO, I don't think they are out of touch. If you don't like them, tough. I'm voicing how I feel about the event. After how many years now, of dealing with the same freakin' overpowered enemy, it's getting old. If someone doesn't like doing something, then it's an indication that it needs to be looked at. If people don't like doing say, the Quarterfield TF, then that's an indication that it needs to be looked at, rather than ignored with statements such as yours.

Most people in here that are blase about this event are saying that it's because there's nothing new to do. That's not a specific complaint about what there is to do being bad, just that it is the same thing again. I actually find both to be interesting missions in their own rights. Both use unique maps, have something to do other than just find target and make it dead, and feature a Boss that doesn't rely on abundant status effects or the dreaded purple triangles to constitute a challenge.
All that said, I would love to see a Candy Keeper type of system for the Valentine Event, just to make it so that you, and anyone else who holds the Snaptooth mission in such low regard, have an alternative. I would also encourage the developers to come up with 3 or 4 other missions for Winter and Valentine's, given in a specific order to avoid the problems with random assignment that can give you 3 Council missions from the Newspaper as your only choices, with only the first being Snaptooth (because of the Toothbreaker badge, which I doubt would ever be put into any kind of buy list for badges) to avoid the tedium of the same thing over and over. As many different themed missions as there are rewards to get from them should be the standard for events. As a sidenote, I'd also be in favor of making Toothbreaker award for a single, or perhaps double, since you would still face him by doing the one mission that he was in in both events, defeat, again, to lessen the tedium of it.
There's room for improvement through addition here. The Pyrrhic choice of just getting rid of something because some don't like it or are bored with it would be both an overreaction and a mistake.

The thing is, you say you want it gone because you're tired of it. Others aren't. Nobody should be asking for content to be removed just because they are personally burnt out on it, it's limiting other peoples' options, and that is selfish. By the same logic that you're using, Frostfire should just be pulled from the game. I mean everyone's done that until they can memorize the map, and he actually is overpowered, unlike Snaptooth, who, even in the Valentine mission can be easily beaten solo by anyone from their teens on with just a little tactical thought.
|
And your comparison to Frostfire fails. You can easily avoid Hollows content or use the drop mission feature to bypass him entirely. Snaptooth, for the Valentine's Event is, for all intents and purposes, the majority of the event.
I have had more problems with Snaptooth, even on 50's, then I ever had with Frostfire, regardless of the character type. The only one I didn't was my Blaster that could Hold him. I also love that you are basically saying that anyone who doesn't easily solo him is a noob without an ounce of tactical planning.

Scratch & Ganymede? Ya, those are decent missions making use of the otherwise not that common teaming of Hero & Villain. I would like to see more of them, as it would get more people playing on Redside (potentially), at least for a bit.
Snaptooth relies on a) lots and lots of henchmen that build up and can easily overwhelm the not-as-durable characters; b) fighting him 3 times; and c) lots and lots of damage combined with perception debuffs.

I'm not going to respond to you futher on this. I've stated how I feel and my reasoning for such feeling. Feel free to have the 'last word' if that is important to you.
Peace.
Edit - Oh ya, content has also been removed in the past, as part of storyline advancement. Calvin Scott Task Force, which I doubt any new player will ever see in Ouroborus. Possible, but unlikely. Snaptooth could be removed, or at least modified greatly, as part of ongoing story. Have DJ Zero say we finally got the best of him and he left to go sulk in a toadstool patch or something. But look! There's the guy who gave Snappie the inspiration for his shenanigans! Go get him!
I never called anyone a noob, or said that they have no sense of tactics if they couldn't beat Snaptooth. It may be that you aren't really thinking about how to limit the risks inherent in the encounter. Nobody is forcing you to stand there when he dives down and respawns, or to fight the ambushes right there. You can move off and deal with them in parts. His damage isn't all that high for an Elite Boss, and that perception buff does essentially nothing, as I've never lost target on him, even while fighting him at full range on a Blaster or flying over him and raining down death on a Kheldian. If you're going to claim that he's so tough, you may not want to do so against someone who has fought him solo something like 400 times in total now. I know his capabilities intimately, and he just isn't that bad. Nosferatu is an overpowered EB, and yes, Frostfire is as well, Snaptooth is plain vanilla with a couple of twists that you can easily reduce into non-existence.
Wait, you can avoid Frostfire? Gee, I wish I wasn't forced into doing those Snaptooth missions. You can avoid it just as easily as Frostfire. Your dismissal of the comparison fails.
Funny thing is that the only thing that Scratch and Ganymede have going for their missions is co-op, and the RWZ and Cimerora put them to shame. Otherwise, those are run-of-the-mill yawnfests against the most overused enemies in the game, on some of the most repetitive maps there are. A kill all on a Council map for the 1st hero one? That's ridiculously bad. If anything, I'd rather see those revamped and leave the different kind of encounter that we have in Snaptooth alone.
Like yours, this is my case. There are people out there doing these missions all the way through both events, which is more than I can say for the newer parts added to the Winter Event. I say that this is a testament to their success, and that they are far from being in need of a complete tearing down. Something new in the last Winter Event meant something new to be ignored after the first week, yet people were forming teams to save Baby New Year right up until the end, which of these is the failure?

I highly doubt that they'll ever just scrap the missions for these two events. It would make the associated badges, temp powers and costume parts unavailable, unless they add a Valentine version of the Candy Keeper, or transfer those rewards to new content. It's far more likely that they'll do what they have been doing for the Halloween and Winter Events, keep them available and add new things that aren't directly related to the old ones.

Yeah, not a popular opinion, but I like the idea of having a collector's item. Makes no sense to me for someone who didn't start playing until '07 having a badge they bought that says "awarded in 2006."

I've usually been too burnt out after running the Winter Event to participate in the Spring Event, but over the past few years I've picked up the badges on my core characters--and I'm certain at least two of my characters still have the Snaptooth mission from last year on them.
The reason I like to see the "same" content stay in the game is thus: every year, I run the BNY mission solo with each of my alts--because the mission is SO perfectly static, I find it to be an excellent way to measure each character's combat prowess against an identical challenge.
I've been surprised by several alts success or failure--the tank who can't beat Snaptooth, the empathy defender who can take him out faster than almost any other alt, the scrapper for whom it is neck and neck--it provides a really good metric for me as to ascertain whether Thor or Hulk IS stronger
Also, the thought of what it would do to the mission database if anything were to be removed is SCARY--many old-timers are sitting on copies of missions which no longer exist in the live game* and it could completely break their contact progress to arbitrarily delete data.
*I think the Faultline revamp knocked it out of the park (GOOD JOB!), but I would still really like to see the old Faultline map available through Flashback. I started playing just before the zone change and only got to fall into the crevasses of the old map once.
Some days I just wake up cranky. Today might be one of those days...
I am glad that there is no new content in this years Spring event - especially along the lines of the 'new' content we got in the Hallowe'en and Winter events. (And Madhatter, I hope you were being sarcastic, as I don't want the devs getting any ideas like that.)
I've said it before and I'll say it again, the Banner and Lord Winter events were total busts. Why? Because in those events, it seemed that players would do the event once, get the badge, and then not bother because it was so tough, leaving those who came in late to the event out of luck getting enough teams together to do the events effectively.
Contrast this to all the other missions in the Winter, Spring and Hallowe'en events. There, players would readily jump on teams to help other players get the needed badges, and would stay on until everyone on that team had gotten them - even if they have everything themselves already. (I know I've done this many times with many toons over the years.)
This is the sense of community that I feel the devs were trying to artificially create with the 'new' content in the past two events. There are just some things that you can't instantly create, you have to let them develope naturally.
That said, I have quite a number of toons I want to get Weedwhacker and Coldblooded on - and a lot more for all the other stuff. I'm psyched!

This is interesting...
Logged into game, and not only did Ganymede want my attention but the Banners appeared in Atlas Park just now.
That's right! Both the Spring Fling AND the Halloween zone events are occurring!

Okay, I'm ready to take back everything I said in my prvious post. I finally got in to do the Snappy mishs, and find that there are a lot more Arachnos there then I remember from years past. Also, it looks like the mish diff is now set to the mish holder's level, not the team leader's - AND everyone is SK'd to the mish holder's level.
Is this a big 'you-know-what' from the devs for us hating their banner and LW events?

Also, yes, ever since super side kicking came out, everyone is SK'd to the mission holder's level.
Both of these are not news.

If you're looking for more game advantages, vets with vet reward powers that know their accolades already have enough over new players that just have no idea that oh those badges add up to permanent bonuses. (Though with noses stuck permanently in the AE trough, that's a bit the newcomers' own faults)
If you're looking for new maps and challenges, get into AE and make some content that is not a speed leveling map and leave the devs to work on getting going rogue out the door, something that I would hope will benefit everyone, including you. It is a solid engine for creating interesting content, which was precisely the point of AE in the first place.
I like new dev content too, but expecting it between issues, while the devs are (I would hope) pushing hard to get Going Rogue out the door is a somewhat unreasonable sense of entitlement, IMHO.
As for why not a new badge each year, having a badge each year for each event skews the badge count too much towards the just being there and doing it every year for every event, and not enough towards doing 700 DIFFERENT things. There's plenty of that already for xmas (which is very much a "the more you do it, the happier you will be" arc any way you slice it). Now I LOVE the xmas event, new badges each year and all, but ... I would not even want a new badge for each holiday each year.
Your girlfriend/boyfriend will most likely thank you for not being on CoX all day/evening on valentines day, doing the same mission for a new badge and maybe temp power or costume piece times 24 characters.
Oh wait. Wrong game.
