Things you avoided playing (Until recently)

This is just a thought that came up as I was taking character inventory, double checking what levels they were at, what their sets were again. (Altoholic here.) I just was noticing what archetypes/powers showed up a couple times...and what didn't until recently.

Tanks: When the game started, these were indestructible, and almost always 'necessary' for teams. Perhaps this over appreciation seemed a bit more like hype, so I avoided them. Starting with defenders, I looked to help my team. This moved to controllers with preemptive support powers, and over to corruptors/dominators who could support through buff/debuff or control and mob annihilation. Then, back to tanks, who actually play kind of like dominators, but with taunt/gauntlet aggro control substituted for actual control.

Fire Blast: I like having tricks I can pull- utility/control/strategic powers. As such, I avoided the 'I just kill stuff' fire blasts. Now that it can be color changed, it's a little more fun for me.

Ice Blast: T'was over used for some time, so I just wanted to try something different. Now, it works well on a storm/ defender.

Energy Manipulation: See above with the popularity thing. Now I can downplay the pink, and it does work well for some new concepts. (A 'pure' archer for instancel)

So, what 'new' old things have you tried?

I've returned to my Archery Blaster, and I am strongly considering rerolling my deleted TA/Arch Defender.

I've also come back to an AR/Dev Blaster and a Fire/Fire Tank (one of 2 surviving tanks in my character list, not a fan of the AT).

I also moved my baby Elec/Elec Blaster to a different server (one of those with one of my [ersonal SGs) so she can be played more often.

OTOH, I also moved a Plant/Rad Controller, a Dark/Regen Scrapper and a Storm/Cold Defender to servers I more rarely visit to make space for new characters when GR gets here.

It's been a long time since I've really enjoyed playing a character with limited or no mez protection--I tend to stick to tanks, scrappers, brutes, and VEATs for the most part. However, I recently re-rolled my soon-to-be tri-form warshade, Ebocron. I'm looking forward to taking advantage of global recharge IOs to get my fluffies up faster, and turtling in Dwarf when my Nova form gets mezzed. Mostly though, he's just a diversion to get me through to GR, when I make my new demon-summoning MM. Come to think of it, I haven't made a MM in quite a while either, so that will be something new as well...

I just started a new blaster and hit level 11. That's the highest I've ever gotten a blaster. I am also playing a new warshade. I'm level 28, which is by far the highest I've ever played a Kheldian. And I have a new baby tank I only play on Mondays. He's still in the single digits, but I've never gotten a tank past the teens before, so we'll see how this one does.

Ever since my first Hero, I've never been able to pick up another Tanker. Invul/EM still feels kinda clunky atm (I blame EM. Something went wrong between when I first rolled him and now) and every other tanker set just...yeah. I guess getting one to 20+ would help a lot.

I can't play Controllers or Dominators. I just cant. I dont know why.

Blasters. I have one blaster (Arch/Dev) that I got to level 50, but I have tended to avoid them; most others I've tried were too fragile and had too bad endurance problems to get out of the teen levels. Now I'm working on an Electric/Mind blaster, which I plan to build for debuff and team utility.

Controllers. Mostly because of issues with the secondaries; I have a very old Ill/Emp that I made ages ago, but learned that I don't like playing /Emp on teams. I tried a Fire/Kin just to see what all the shouting was about: but if I dislike /Emp, I positively loathe /Kin. The fact that I consider Speed Boost a curse didn't help. Now I'm trying once more, with a winter themed Ice/Cold that was my holiday project.

Controllers, it seems, are barely playable before level 38 when they get their last secondary power. And I've never tried one that didn't have massive recharge issues. Powers that take more than two minutes to recharge may as well not exist as far as I'm concerned. They get moved off the main task bar and forgotten. I hope this one goes a bit better.

Kheldians. I have a warshade now. He's level 10. He's stayed that level for a while now, because he was the designated candy cane redeemer. Now I might try to level him. Or I may end up deleting him the same way I've ended up deleting all the Kheldians I've tried in the past. Making new costumes is one of the chief anticipated things about levelling up. Character types that take away the costume you made tend to be neglected.

I've always struggled with melee toons.

It took me ages to try one and I got my brute to 50 in autumn of last year but I've never had a scrapper past 15 and I'm just getting a tank to the 20s (and I've struggled even in good teams, but it's finally getting to be ok now.)

I've never tried Grav in an meaningful way or any form of Ice control but I do like my Ice/En blaster

I've been playing almost 4 years now I guess but I've still got lots I can do

For me it's Blasters and anything with a shield.

I get bored with blasters easily for some reason, but I've now managed to get one to level 20 without feeling like its a chore to play him.

And as for the shields, I just never got around to using them until now. The character is only 3 levels old so I might just forget about him in a while.

Hm. For the longest time, I avoided playing Regeneration. Flavor of the Month and all that. Then, in rapid succession, I created three Regen characters. A Spines/Regen, a Broadsword/Regen, and a Claws/Regen. I also have a Claws/Regen Stalker.

I haven't played any of them that much, though. The BS/Regen is the highest level, but because she's in a level pact with one of my sisters' characters, and she doesn't play that often, I don't play her that often either.

It took me a long time to try Shield, but I did eventually create a Mace/Shield Brute. Again, levelling pact, though.

And of course Kheldians and SoA I couldn't play until I unlocked them. But I didn't take long in trying them out.

I don't think there are any ATs I avoided playing. I have alts of all ATs, and play all of them about equally.

I prefer melee characters but there's nothing I've tried that I have found difficult for me to play and enjoy. Probably I have the most trouble with Empaths, just because of people's attitudes towards them. You meet too many people who think you're supposed to be a heal bot and nothing else. I've played three different ones to 25, no higher. kins and other heavy buffers (ice, sonic, fire) bug me to play a little too.

The other thing is Master Minds. Not that I don't like playing them, I played a bots/dark to 43 and enjoyed it very much, but it's not a class you can just pick up and play for one evening after months of not playing them. I want to get my MM to 50 but it will take me a few nights to get back into the swing of things, they're much more complicated than a scrapper or blaster (at least if you want to do it right). ^_^

My Arachnos Soldier. He was stuck at 8 for a while, mainly because I got tired of looking at his Arachnos armor. Then I learned that SoAs get a second costume slot at 10 so I started playing as him. He's a level 26 Crab Spider now.

TBH though, I kind of liked him as a guy with a gun, so I'm considering remaking him as a AR/?? Corr on another server. The only thing that's keeping me from doing that right now is the fact that I despise all the non-unlockable rifle models.

I could also never really get into Stalkers. I still have a couple, but they're all below level 10.

I've never had a Troller that I kept past 14. And I've never had a Dom that I kept past 10.

The ones I've absolutely avoided will probably never get played at all, since they're so antithetical to my playstyle. Fortunately, that's only a handful of stuff.

Having Vengeance and Fallout slotted for recharge means never having to say you're sorry.

Recently did a MoSTF. Was afraid to let the team down after a few failures when it first came out.

However, thanks to a tonne of purples and greens, and some awesome teammates, (Thanks 3D and Victory Global!), I got me a badge!

Highest Dom I have is 10, and highest controller is 32, despite having been around for 4.5 years. That probably won't be changing for a while. Just not my cup of tea.

any fire set. I have no issue with fire, its just that my friends tended to play fire a lot, and i like contrasting characters, so i trend towards ice sets as a result. and i have to say, the mitigation of slows that ice sets tend to carry has kind of spoiled me, i know fire sets tend to outdamage ice ones, but the mitigation keeps my suicidal playing style alive longer.

i also really havent played masterminds. I understand they are very fun, but i just dont feel the pull. bots look like 5 pounds of awesome in a 2 pound bag, but i just have to feel that i am doing the fighting, not sitting back and directing it. demon summoning might break me though.

prior to the buff, stalkers tended to get a pass, but now i am running a few.

finally, prior to weapon customization, i avoided any weapon based powersets, i know its iconic, but i always liked feeling that i was the source of my powers, not something i was carrying. post customization i have few.

I have probably made a dozen AR/Dev blasters and abandoned them all by level 8. Recently I made one and am at level 30 on her and still interested. I guess I just needed a character concept to click.

I've tried Controllers before but never got one past level six. The terrible damage led to brutally slow leveling while solo. I recently made one and pushed her to level 22 but soloing is still about as much fun as getting punched in the neck. So she only really comes out when I'm willing to actively seek out teams. Got her past the level six hump though! Maybe once she gets her pet, it'll be better (Earth/Storm).

It's not that new, but one set that I put off for ages was Fire Control. The damage output was just too low. Thanks to multiple veteran attacks, I finally made a Fire/Sonic controller. She's up to level 27 these days.

More recently I decided to finally break down and create a Necromancy mastermind. I was never able to find a good fit with the secondaries except for Dark Miasma, and I already have several characters with Dark Miasma. But after my Thugs/Dark got to level 50, I decided I might as well create a Necromancy/Dark.

Brutes.

Explicitly avoided making one like it was the plague. Eventually made one solely because I came up with a concept I liked though he's still a bit neglected.

Only thing I didn't play until "recently" was Claws on a Scrapper. I've been playing Scrappers for the past five years and have many combinations of everything, but Claws somehow fell through until I gave them to a new character sort of as a chance concept evolution. That was a few months ago.

Beyond that, Stalkers. Didn't play them until they were fixed to be actually worth playing. Right now I have two, but with plans for more.

I DID play Blasters, but before the Defiance changes, I only had one and even that one wasn't worth playing. Since then, I've gotten two to 50 and one into the 40s and there are a few I'm forgetting.

Beyond that, what I don't play, I never will. I don't play Tankers, because they don't do enough damage. I don't play Defenders, Controllers and Corrupers and I never will. I tried plying a Kheldian, but that didn't work. I tried playing a Dominator, but that failed. I haven't tried a villain Epic, and I likely never will. No real reason to, as I don't enjoy Arachnos powers to begin with.

You can keep him as a very effective guy with a gun if you continue along the straightforward SoA path. Don't specialise into Crab or Bane.

^ This

"Gun-Banes", as they are often know (Go with Bane secondary for the armour, cloaking device and survailance), are rather nasty customers. Even more efficient than AR/?? characters, because most of your secondary you don't need to worry about. SoA gun also has the killer combo; Wide Web Nade, Venom Nade, Frag nade, Heavy Burst. Anything standing after that gets a bayonet in the guts, and tends to go down for the count

The more traditional term for them is "Huntsman" since it's technically just a wolf spider promotion and they're the next step up from them.

Huntsman can be incredibly effective, most tend to doublestack assault (+30% damage) and manuevers (around 20% def to all increase) and as with all the VEATs, 2 or more of them turns an already good team into an uber killing machine. A team of all Huntsman built VEATs gives godly bonuses (240% damage increase and 160% def to all which I think is above the def softcap...) and are for all purposes pretty much unstoppable, the sheer damage output means that even AV level regen barely holds them back.

Respec him into a Huntsman, and keep the gun!! Aisinya (sp?) has an excellent guide, and with the increased speed of the powers, is quite fun and useful on a team.

[Edit: I see many others have recommend this too. Did the peer pressure get to you yet?]

Fixed to reflect my Huntsman's attack pattern.

Only about 3.5x the softcap... And very close to the hardcap for most squishies.
