Uptight & Hypocritical

I wonder.. Lately I've noticed a lot of hostility and uptight behaviour in the game amongst the players, usually I'd attribute this to generally being on the internet and people being cocky, egotistical and convinced that they're superior in some way, shape or form.. To be honest, I probably should but I figured I'd say something for the sake of saying something and perhaps making others think as well as seeing what the rest of the community thought about the issue.

Of course I'm on the Virtue server and I'm an RPer as many of us are on this server, it's something that not everyone does admittedly but I find it fun and I find it relaxing. My problem is that a lot of people seem to have the mentality that things like MRP and ERP are somehow wrong. That those that partake in these forms of RP are somehow 'lower life forms' than they. It both amuses and disturbs me that people seem to have such a high and mighty mentality, I'm wondering.. Why do people feel like that?

Not saying I do it, just saying that it doesn't seem like there's anything wrong with this. We're assuming here both parties involved are at least 18 years old RL so that means they're consenting adults, that assumed don't people have the right to do what they want and rp what they want in public? I can see a concern if it was in public, I can see how people would be offended and heck I probably would be too.. But I've noticed that despite the fact that most MPRers and ERPers do it in private they're still mocked and insulted for it as if they're lesser for taking part in something they enjoy.

No ones better than anyone else is what I'm getting at. So why act like this? Why not just.. You know? Live and let live, get along with each other and show some common civility? If you don't like something, you don't have to take part in it et cetera et cetera.

What are all these acronyms? I don't know em', but keep it Teen rated. That is how this game is rated and governed.

MRP - Mature Role Play, usually dealing with adult-sensitive things like torture, blood letting... think 17+ on the movie ratings
ERP - Erotic Role Play, dealing with sexual interactions of varying degrees.

why you ask I'll give an honest answer so please don't take any offence to this.

It's weird alright and creepy some 40 year old guy pretending to be a 23 year old girl and ERP with some 25 year old guy pretending to be an 29 year old guy. It sends chills down my spine just thinking about this or, why would anyone want to do this? These fake relationships are about as odd as they come. It's one thing to meet people online it's another to not meet them and ERP with them.

It's like phone sex if you ask me it makes absolutely no sense. Can't you go out and meet real people for these types of relationships? This is a hero/villain action game how anyone thought to bring this type of game play into I'm not sure.

In the end I just chalk it up to internet weirdness and try not to give it much attention.

Apologies, I thought the acronyms were well known.

As for it being a Teen Rated game, yes.. But again, consenting adults should be allowed to do what they want to do in private, notice I'm specifically mentioning in private because I do agree that public ERP is just.. Not right.. It's a Teen rated game, yes and it's not appropriate when there may be younger players or RPers around but in private who is it hurting? I think perhaps even the gms and mods may agree with me on that term, if it's kept private then it's not a big deal.

I suppose I'm less prudish about it than others. See, I've spent a lot of time in another game called Second Life that has a lot of very overt and public ERP, frankly after my excursion and time there I've become more tolerant of it because I finally decided "It's going to happen anyway, I don't have to take place in it if I don't want to, the people doing it may be perfectly good people just doing it for an escape from reality or simple enjoyment and frankly if it just horribly offends me I can remove myself from the area or whatever and be done with it."

Again, my thing is that I don't understand the high and mighty attitude in relations to this. Why cause a lot of drama insulting and berating someone for something they're doing in private?

Okay, so where's the hypocrisy?

Thank you, Champion.

I can't see this, to be honest.. Plus how do you know the general populace of City of Heroes isn't actually what they claim to be? I'd guess the average player ranges in the 20-30 age category with a few exceptions to that. I'm a 23 year old female IRL ( That's my eye on my avatar ) though I guess my views could be a little naive since I tend to lean towards the idealistic side when it comes to dealing with other people and what I expect out of them ( IE - Honesty and decency )

Well, it makes no sense for you.. But again, they may have their own reasons for doing it and perhaps they just plain find it enjoyable and fun. Isn't that what the game is about in the end? Perhaps even they need some diversity from the monotony of the game and don't want to stop playing but rather to seek something out within the game different from 'kill x number of creatures' or 'xx has been kidnapped' frankly I could understand that, I get tired of doing missions over and over too. There are only so many times I can kill Snaptooth before I start calling shennanigans and just get painfully bored with it.

In my experience many RPers who do these things are also in rl relationships which brings in the whole 'are you cheating on your rl partner?' into the equation and that's an argument for another day ( I say if your rl partner is okay with it, no. It's just a game and just fantasy... But then I tend to be more liberal than others ) so I don't know if I agree on the whole 'why not go meet real people?' also some people simply can't, won't or aren't comfortable with that. Take into consideration the vast array of personalities and differences between people in the game. Maybe they're anti-social, maybe they just don't like people, maybe they're disabled or maybe they have another perfectly valid reason for not wanting to dive into that?

Again, I'm more liberal than others. I tend to be more about the love and peace thing and have the idealistic expectation that everyone should live and let live.. Things just seem to run much more smoothly when people are tolerant and logical rather than bigoted and angry.

The hypocrisy is in that they have a high and mighty attitude as if they're better than someone else then claim otherwise or often berate or find it offensive when others have a high and mighty attitude towards them. The hypocrisy is also in the fact that I have a sneaking suspicion those who are especially vocal on this subject ( being against it and acting superior ) are probably guilty of doing it as well. ( I've checked the global of some insulting others for it and noticed the same global on characters that have "ERP Welcome" etc listed in their profiles. Evidently they don't realize how incriminating a global can be. )

As mentioned above some have it listed in their profile "ERP/MRP welcome" and the like to display to others that they do this and are interested in it so to attract like-minded people who they can enjoy rp with. Often when people with this listed in their profile leave an area or are standing around together I've seen global light up or people begin to insult over local ( usually global though ) going on about this, that and the other and how it's wrong and deplorable et cetera et cetera.

After that, there is this, which you're already aware of...it's the Internet. John Gabriel's G.I.F.T. illustration already covers why people act the way they do online.

And regarding the theme of your question to application beyond the game's context...

People are stupid. People are also ********. I don't think there's a solution to those two conditions, so it's more or less a case of "quit letting it get to you".

I'm all with ya about leaving people be and letting them do what they want. Hell I got a gay uncle who is married to a spanish guy(from chilly I think) I'm from Canada and gay marriage is allowed. I was just letting you know why people give you guff and why I thought it was odd. I would never give anyone any trouble if I saw some sentences if I was passing by but alot of people arent like that. Everyone has their own style of weird and for some that's intolarance just try to ignore it.

I was just letting you know why I thought it was weird and why others give you trouble for it.

If it really was in private we wouldn't know it was happening. They would be "doing it" in private zones like SG bases, and they'd create and use private channels with settings that prevent anyone from joining without an invite.

However that's not what happens all the time. There are individuals that do their schtick where other players can easily stumble across them. There are also jerks that make innappropriate suggestions to strangers and harass them even after they get told to stop.

I had one clown that must have put one of my characters on his friends list because he'd hit on her everytime he ran across her. He didn't stop bugging me until I bought the Science Booster and turned the tables on him by hitting the costume change and turning into a 10' tall monstrous escaped prisoner and telling him, "You gots a real purty mouf, now bendover and squeal like a pig fo yo daddy, cuz you my little puppy now!"

What consenting adults should and should not be allowed to do in private is not up to the players. It is up to the people that run the game. If such roleplaying is a private affair, why this concern being voiced publicly? How do those people that are uptight and hypocritical even know which person to make fun of? When this above Teen rating atmosphere spills out into the open in the game, then you are violating the rules.

Then there's the problem that this is a T rated game and internet annonymity. How do you KNOW everyone involved is a consenting adult? It is irresponsible to engage in sexually explicit discussion with someone online unless you actually know them in real life. How old are they really? That 23 year old catgirl might be a 13 year old boy in real life for all you know. Do you really think you're behaving in a mature and responsible manner? Really?

I actually find ERP to be a silly thing to do (I can't imagine people typing that stuff in earnest), but it doesn't bother me if two consenting adults (confirmed adults) want to type dirty things at each other to get off. Whatever, have fun. But please please please be sure the person you're doing that with is, in fact, an adult. And not just because they told you they were. "She told me she was 18, officer!" never was a valid excuse.

When we first started playing the game in 2006, we rolled initially on Virtue. However, after the first day my wife was so tired of being hit on constantly that we moved over to protector instead. We've been back on virtue for the past few years when most everyone we knew on Protector left the game and it doesn't happen nearly as often as it did then, but it still does happen. She had one guy actually send her tells RPing how he.. ahem... took her character by force on the bar in pocket D in very explicit details. She left the area right away and put him on ignore, but that sort of thing is the kind of thing that really makes people think they don't want to be around the kind of people who ERP.

Then there ARE people who like to make sure others "overhear" their ERP. Virtual Exhibitionists or something, I don't know. It's inappropriate no matter their motive, however.

And, my god is this thread creepy. Reminds me of that NAMBLA episode in South Park where one guy was defending himself saying he stood for love and care and feelings when having sex with children. Now I'm not saying ERP'n is just as bad as having sex with children, but it's still a very disturbing thing to do.

This is an online videogame based on comic book super heroes, not some creepy sex chatroom where a bunch of 40 year old guys come and have "virtual sex" with each other. Aside from being creepy it's also out of place, go play Second Life or The Sims or something

Exactly. And those individuals are the people that have given the discreet MRP/ERPers a bad reputation. Just like the foul mouth jerks gave PvP a bad name.

It's always been a small group of people that can't keep things quiet that spoil it for the majority.
