Crazy Name Idea You'll Probably Hate
Names in this game aren't really unique -- the system doesn't decorate them with disambiguating characters, we do. If I want the name Darkfaith I can get some version of it -- Dark.Faith, Dark-Faith, -Darkfaith, xx Darkfaith xx, Darkfaith2, Darkfa1th, etc.
Is it really any better to force players resort to adding junk letters to the name to make them syntactically unique, than to just have the system find some way of doing it? I would never personally accept a name like "xx Darkfaith xx", but I would take "Dark-Faith" if "Darkfaith" was already in use. But nothing will stop some guy after me from taking "xx Darkfaith xx", and then there's this guy out there with an immersion-breaking copy of MY NAME! So, it's disingenuous to say that such a system would be unacceptably bad, because we already have a system that's equally terrible, which produces exactly the same kind of garbage names that you want to avoid. True, you don't have to give them to your characters, but other people give them to their characters all the time and you have to use them if only to put them on ignore . |
I try not to team with people who have such names. In my experience, they are lazy and unimaginative. Not qualities I like in a teammate.
I'll admit, I LOVE the idea of being able to name someone anything I want to.
Playing Champions Online, I made Wraith, Zero, Abyss, Guardian Angel, Darkfrost, and Gardenhose Champion.
I had fun; I got those names because I wanted them, it didn't break my immersion, despite what the crowd calls out for it to do, and it made me feel good to not have to be restricted by said names.
This, however, is subject to technical difficulties by the playerbase, as per Memphis_Bill said. Yes, the '@Globalname' would fix it, but it would be complicated and annoying to type everytime.
Of course, there could be a list! A Friends List that would only accept one 'Wraith' and one 'Zero' and one 'Superhumanman'; on this list, you wouldn't HAVE to type the /Global in, you'd just type the name and the system remembers for itself.
Me? I like the idea, but I'm not stupid enough to think that my likes are the community's likes.
I prefer to be Grinning Spade, not GrinningSpade@Gunbunny. Please don't. See memphis bill for some excellent technical reason why this is a bad idea. I don't care if it works in CO or STO, I don't play those games, I play this one.

To the topic at large, this only really works if global names are appended to chat. This is fugly and I do not want to see it in any game I play ever again. If you can come up with a way that does this without appending junk to my character name ANYWHERE yet still make it unambiguous EVERYWHERE, then I will gladly sign off on it. However, this is a Catch 22, so I have my doubts.
Samuel_Tow is the only poster that makes me want to punch him in the head more often when I'm agreeing with him than when I'm disagreeing with him.

When this argument was had, long and drawn out, in the beta forums of that other game which took the other approach I said the same thing I will now:
In essence, what is the difference between being Dark-Childe or Dark Child@Global Name, or whatever other means is used to provide the "unique non-unique name?" Either way, the name's not really unique, doesn't function that way, etc. You're still remembered by the unique string and mechanically function through the unique string. All it does is make names longer and uglier. If you want to be Dark Child so badly that being Dark Child@Global Name (and forcing everyone else to be the same) is a fine solution to you, that option already exists in City of Heroes.

total kick to the gut
This is like having Ra's Al Ghul show up at your birthday party.
The problem with the bolded part is what if you become or want to become friends with more than one?

And Sam; I don't mean to sound like a jerk, but in the issue of cosmetics, there was/is an option to hide the globals in the CO chat.
I like this idea, I don't care if I see amny [Ice Man] everyone I look ; ) beside unless you have a name like [Ice Boy] what are the odds are you seeing the same name as yourself? 11 severs, many zones. : ) I like getting my name. Anything Champions do we can do better! Lets do it!

Our naming policy is already better than Champions. No need to change a thing.

It still breaks my Catch 22, though - unambiguous everywhere, ugly nowhere. I don't feel there IS a good solution.

I didn't see one, but that really would help. I'm not sure how easy it would be to tell identically-named people apart (and in a system with no name check, that happens more often than one would think), but it's a step in the right direction.

I'll join the unsigned camp on this one.
My names are my names. I thought of them first, so too bad for anyone who comes after me. I don't want anyone else on my server to be able to have them. If this makes me selfish, self-centered, or stuck up, so be it.

All kidding aside, I loathe the idea of appending global names. It can make nice, names, like Apparition look like crap, if played by a dumb player: Apparition@J3rkPants12.
I bet that first word is why the forum censors it, although that doesn't explain why it lets "WTF" slide.

It's just "For The Win" backwards, indicating the opposite. Or maybe it's indicating Niw Eht Rof...

Eh, I dunno. I kind of like having my character names be unique, and so do a lot of other people.

Apparently that doesn't bother you, and I'm sure there are others who agree with your position.
However, I and many others don't. I wish you could have heard the reaction at Hero Con when it was suggested that something like this be implemented. More than 95% of the room roared in strong disapproval.
I like the fact that I have to be creative to get a unique (server-wise, anyway) name, and that I know for certain that NOBODY else on my server has that name (if I'm creative enough, nobody on ANY server may have it).
So to me, and apparently a LOT of others, any suggestion that reduces the uniqueness of names is not palatable.
