Name purge FTW
Agree...Some people just want a certain name. It is not lack of originality or not having creativity. I do not see why they will not purge names off 5yr old dead accounts for any level of toon. Instead of holding on to hope a player will return after 5 years, why not take care off the current paying player base . This also has to be a let down for any new players who try 30 names, only to be shot down. Sometimes it is not about accepting a variation of a name..some people just want a certain name.
Name Reversal can work too, in some cases.
I did a move to consolidate my villians on one server and found that "Kobold Kommando" was already taken on the new server. *shrug*
Thus, "Kommando Kobold".
Cap'n Crunch ---- Crunch Captain
(or Major Crunch, General Crunch, Admiral Crunch, Lieutenant, LTC., etc.)
I'll be honest. I never have problems with names. Ever. Really, I don't see what the big deal is. >_>

I do pretty well with names. It's always a bit of a disappointment to find your first choice taken though. I will say the ability to check on a name BEFORE creating concept & costume was a huge step in the right direction.

I still think that the "This name is unavailable!" pop-up should read "This name is not available on this server." as some new players might not know that names are only server specific. If they are more married to the specific name than to the server choice, they might try another server. In theory, this might spread newer players to less populated servers and help balance out the population, but I really doubt that it would have a noticable effect.
Still would be a nice little thing to have.
Yes it is. Well, that and stubbornness and a sense of false entitlement.

No matter how great of a concept I come up with, the name has to fit the character and concept prefectly or I scrap that character.
I cannot play a character if I do not have a good name.
You can call it stubbornness but I just will not play a character with a cheaply thought up name...I call it keeping a high standard.
Now I don't "whine and complain" about not getting the name I want...I just create that character on a server that has that name available.
I don't believe it's a false sense of entitlement...it's just the fact of that name fits perfectly for my character.
Character names is the bottom line for my characters...if the name is cheap or if it doesn't fit...I will not play that character.
That is the main reason why I have only played two different characters for 2+ years now.

Since those terms can be applied to either side of any internet argument, you are being non-unique. Be moar creative, plz.
Merry Christmas!
Is that anything like the stubbornness and false sense of entitlement of the rabid unique name advocates? Yes, I think it is.

Or did anyone ever come up with an idea that doesn't make the chat look similar to Champions?
I don't see how preferring a simple and nice looking chat system over some sort of overly complicated and frankly ugly monstrosity is self entitlement.

Sense of Entitlement: When you want something.
I never feel an entitlement to a name. Though I have been dissappointed to not have the name I want available. But I live with it and find a new name.
HOWEVER...that said, just the other day I had a list of 7 names I was going for...and tried them on every server...and all 7 names were taken on every server...sooo...I don't know if that's going to help the newer players who want a certain name, but aren't tied to one specific server.

Where R (Range) is 40 characters (a-z, 0-9, - . ' ?) and the possible selection N is 20 characters, we get some
3.35367e+29 possible choices.
If you take CaSe into account that shoots up R to 55, giving this value as a result.
1.22871e+33
Thats a huge number.
Consider that the combined mass of all matter in the solar system is only something like 10^34kilograms.
A billion is 10^9
Give each billion a billion things thats 10^18
Give each of those megatrillions a billion things thats 10^24, and you still have to give those quintillions some thousands of billions MORE, EACH, to get to 10^33
People complaining about names being unavailable simply have insufficient imagination.
End of argument.

Cry much?
You come up with a GREAT NAME (TM), say "Cap'n Crunch", and lo, when you try to name your character to this Amazing Name, it's unavailable.
Here's some recommendations to get you past the hurdle.
Prepend your name with a Colour.
Yellow Cap'n Crunch
Blue Cap'n Crunch
Orange Cap'n Crunch
Turquoise Cap'n Crunch
OR An emotion
Happy Cap'n Crunch
Sad Cap'n Crunch
Vapid Cap'n Crunch
Banal Cap'n Crunch
There is also the end of your name to modify, if putting something in front doesn't appeal.
Say the name you wanted was "Burning Hate"
Burning Hate Revisited
Burning Hate Returns
Burning Hate Surprise
Burning Hate Ultimate
Burning Hate OMG
Burning Hate The Movie
Burning Hate And Spite
Burning Hate Invisible
Burning Hate of Fate
Using such simple 'additional words' you can still create a signature character name with all the feel and bounce of something special, and not have to resort to mis-spelling, leet-speak, putting a number at the end, or the hateful use of an excrescence like
Burning Hate.
PERIODS DO NOT BELONG IN MOST CHARACTER NAMES.
Edit: Fleeting's link below is terrific. Highly recommended.
Now get off my lawn.
