I'm out here in Chicago doing present hunts right now. I'll shoot off a global if I come across the GM...

Twelve to eighteen inches is Lord Winter? Call me back when it's at least waist-high. Then I'll swap my shovel for my blower.

It can actually snow that much? we get maybe an inch of snow every 10 years here. (L.A.)

Of course, at the first hint of moister hitting the windshield, everyone forgets how to drive too.

There I was between a rock and a hard place. Then I thought, "What am I doing on this side of the rock?"

This happens everywhere . . . for the first major storm. What differentiates what I'd consider rough weather places, like Wisconsin, where I grew up, from easy weather places, like Maryland, where I am now, is whether people start remembering how to drive after that. It comes back for the rough weather places, but it never does for the easy ones.

That's one big reason the 8 or so inches of snow outside my window is a "major" storm here, while it'd be a significant, but not earthshattering, one back home.

The other thing to consider is that not every region has excellent snow removal equipment. Some areas don't even understand that pre-treating the roads and actively plowing throughout the storm will mean clean roads. Alas, not every place is used to how to deal with snow.

There's a lot of snow here in Charlottesville. Or more accurately a lot of snow here for Charlottesville. Most we've had in years, and nobody here can drive worth a damn in the first place.

Odd thing is they're usually way ahead of the curve on tossing down salt and plowing the roads. I mean they'll salt when there's just a high chance of snow ... and this time nothing. Not even any plows aside from 'random guy with a plow on their pickup'.

They're no calling for 10-15 in NYC. That's pretty significant here. The city is a heat island and that much in one sitting is pretty rare.

I'll galdy trade so... all of this rain further south for your snow. Hampton at its worst is supposed to get a blustery 1/2" and Newport News maybe an 1-1/2"

yeah, a former co-worker came to johnstown from south carolina, she was amazed how nothing closed when we got 3-10 inches of snow, but we have the stuff to handle it, down south not so much. then again, population density helps, harrisburg has to shut down because snow removal would be difficult at full bustle, in this more rural area, the snow crews can work around the more sparse population.

Major snows are infrequent enough in Seattle that it's cheaper to shut down the city for a couple of days every decade than to invest in a lot of snow removal equipment.

Oh good lord no. I love snow. This is the most we've had in years and I'm quite happy for it. I'm just surprised by the condition of the roads.

Sorry my SG leader hasn't been on and didn't give me base upkeep permissions so I couldn't get the Telepads up and running, otherwise I would have so been there and laying down forts like you wouldn't believe.

14-16 inches expected just west of Washington DC before it tends -- we're up to 12.0 inches officially at Dulles Airport.

Last night just before it hit people were crowding the malls, parking in fire lanes, not using turn signals, cutting each other off, braking unexpectedly, and generally acting like they were panicked. In other words, the impending snow wasn't making any difference at all in their normal driving habits.

I live in NJ, and it's snowing like crazy. We're supposed to get about a foot. Been out shoveling a few times already, and fallen down twice.

What really surprises me though is just how many people drive 60 MPH and then can't understand why they crash into the curb or do a 180 while trying to turn.

I had to drop into first gear to get up a hill this morning. Woohoo!

Now if only I had a standard...

Not sure which L. A. you are referring to but MY L. A. only sees a dusting of ash from the brush fires, and THAT's a whole other GM .

Just shoveled the stoop and walk here. Not that deep yet, maybe two inches at best. Really pretty here in the city currently. About to go for a walk just to see the neighborhood under the blanket.

Right about now is when I'm quite smug about living in Phoenix, except for the fact that the snowbirds are now here, and they can't drive worth a damn no matter WHAT the weather conditions are. *sighs*

I got about 6"+ or so here about 30 mins south of Richmond, VA. So nice I love snow...

And yes, add the typical "southerners have no clue how to drive/what to think when snow comes/is mentioned" comment here

I still fondly remember one night (years ago when I was in high school still) it was snowing/going to snow and it did...woke up the next morning and there is barely enough snow to cover the grass on the front lawn and no snow on the roads/driveways (no ice either from what I remember) and they closed down school, (This was huge just because I went to a private school and they usually didn't close down school...maybe this is why)....by around noon all the snow was melted and it was probably a good 40-60 degrees outside...sunny and warm. I was enjoying it!

Shoveled the driveway with my dad....good times.

I just measured, I've got 18 inches in Silver Spring, MD. Good thing I've got all my christmas shopping done!

And tonight, I explore. Just like old times. This is the best snow we've had here since 2002/3. I'm so excited, even though I had to shovel snow literally five times today!
