Worried about my Graphics...

First of all I have a relatively new computer. It has always run rather nice and smooth when running CoH.
So, I was looking at my options and just messin around and seeing what things do when I notice my graphics setting.
I notice that it is set at "recommended"(which is one down from the top) which is fine but I wanted to see what the top graphic setting looked like...
So I switch to quality setting, and my comp immediatly and noticeably lags down.
Now I am fine with the setting my graphics were at, but this concerns me because I was really looking forward to "Ultra mode" when GR comes out.

So if my comp cant handle "quality mode" I fear it will have no chance against "Ultra mode".

To satisfy those people who will undoubtedly ask me what my graphics card is, It is a NVIDIA GeForce. Im not tech smart when it comes to products so...Im not asking for a solution just a yes or no can I use Ultra mode effectively.

(BTW sorry since Im pretty sure this was addressed by several people after the initial announcement of "Ultra mode", but I missed those threads, and they have already come and gone.)

I have the same worries with my computer because i am not techy at all. I had horrid load screen times(sometimes zoning would take 3-4 mins) and graphics were bad so i went from one gig mem and a graphics card nvidia 6150 to 3 gigs of mem and nvidia graphics card 9600 and it works alot better but im worried that with new graphics it will make me have to buy new card and more mem. I play at rec also just so my computer doesnt lag.

To the OP, we need to know what model GeForce you have. To Cosmic: a 9600 should be enough to run GR but it will be lower-end.

This really matters. A GeForce2 MX 100 and a GeForce GTX 295 are both "NVIDIA GeForce" cards, but the former is an eight-year-old card just barely capable of running CoH right now, while the latter will have no trouble with Ultra Mode.

Dang. Time to upgrade, I guess. I still have a 7800 GTX that I love and still plays the game well.

What NVidia card would be recommended to use the Ultra Mode in GR?

As far as Paragon studios recommended? So far, none, really.

This is Player Questions, so I'm questioning the players, not Paragon Studios.

There's no doubt I'll have to upgrade my 7800 GTX, but looking to the future, what NVidia card will let me play Ultra Mode in GR comfortably?

Rajani means we don't really know for sure, because Paragon Studios hasn't told us.

Simple answer: We don't know yet, because no specs have been produced.

More complex answer: Until official specs for Ultra-mode graphics are produced, there's no way to be absolutely certain, however an nVidia 275 GTX card is hovering around the upper limit of what I would call the "reasonable" price bracket (for a 285 or 295 you're looking at "I must have the best and I don't care what it costs" money). From what I can see, though, the 9-series will work with at least some of the Ultra-mode bells and whistles switched on. Anything higher than that and you're looking at more features being available and less strain on the GPU.

My 8600GTX runs Halflife 2 Episode 2 just fine (a little slow down when the portal storm opens over the citidel) and alot of the features of Ultra Mode remind me of the features of that game. That's a weak point to stand on, but until the devs release something a little more hardball I'm going to think that that might be near the minimum.

I think people may be overblowing how high end things need to be for ultra mode. They said they wanted to take advantage of the new tech to come out since the games release, but keep in mind when this game hit shelves the 4800 was a great card. I know, I ran the game on a 4400 for my first two years.

Hrm... I have an ATI Radeon HD 2600 XT card. I suspect I won't be playing Ultra Mode with it. (I'm fairly hardware clueless, btw.)

To the OP, if you're really concerned with it, but the game is playing fine for you as is right now, the best advice would be to wait until official specs and recommendations are released by the studio as the Ultra Mode release gets closer (rumors are that it MAY be coming before Going Rogue, but I think thats just speculation at the moment). You don't want to go get a new card now that you think can handle the game fine, but then it not be enough for Ultra Mode once it does hit and you have to spend money on yet another card, especially if you're fine with how your current card is performing. If it ain't broke, don't fix it, especially if you don't know how to fix it yet.

I just picked up a 9600 GSO, which is a pimped out 8800, and I run with the slider to the right. The only slowdown I get is when I'm in my SG's crap-stacked-to-the-ceiling base, and oddly approaching Wentworth's sometimes.

Sometimes it's better to have the setting lower as that chops out the fog, good for Dark Astoria.

My 9600 GSO was a little higher than $50 at Newegg.

Just to be clear for anyone else reading this thread, this person had two separate problems: long load times and bad graphics. The cure for long load times was getting more memory (not graphics card memory, regular system memory). Getting a spiffy graphics card won't help with load times.

If you want to 'mess around' in even greater detail, you can change your graphics settings to advanced mode. Instead of that slider, you will be able to individually control a great number of settings.

FYI, some people find some of the graphics settings genuinely ugly and have them turned off/down for reasons having nothing to do with performance. Advanced mode gives you much greater customization.

As others have said, we don't know right now.

Realistically, I'd GUESS (see "Wild Buttocked Guess") the minimum would probably be around GTX260 or so.

My best advice would be to just start putting a couple bucks away out of every paycheck.

Then, when they announce the specs, make your purchase around that time, and somewhat in excess of the spec.

Fingers crossed that my 250 and wife's 8800GTX will work well enough. Then again, by the time it comes out it might not cost too much to upgrade both cards if I have to.

Yeah, I am also worried about my card, I have 2 gigs of mem also, but thinking about upgrading. Waiting for the specs as advised. Right now I am running a GeForce 6800. It works well on performance mode, but max settings are a bit choppy. Was thinking about getting a 9800, but then I will just be upgrading to decent, when I should be overshooting so I have a few years of quality graphics.

Decent cards are expensive when one is unemployed.

I really doubt Ultra mode will be so demanding that it'll require a high-end card (unless it's poorly optimized). I suspect that a G92 core Nvidia card will suffice (9800 GTX and GTS250 being the most common currently). But this is just speculation so wait until the official requirements are released.

Well someone who went to Hero-con said that the devs suggest an ATI 4850 as the minimum card for Ultra Mode which is on par with the GTX 260.

Full reflections and hard shadows are going to be heavy burden on rendering and likely a post process effect.

To the OP:

I set the Graphics Slider to Quality, and then after that, I set the Advanced Graphics Settings to Enabled. I click the Apply Now button, then quit the game. After the game shuts down and unloads, I open up TweakCoH and adjust my settings there.

I have a BFG 6200 OC 256MB PCI nVidia card, and the following settings below are what were recommended to me. In general, they work fine, except in high-traffic, such as Rikti Mother Ship Raids, or the recent Villain Hamidon Raid attempted this past Saturday. In those cases, I disable the Advanced Graphics Settings, and put the Slider to the lowest setting.

On the Graphics1 tab:
Left Column
Character Texture Quality: Very High
Character Detail: 100%
Depth of Field (DOF) Effects: Checked
Depth of Field (DOF) Amount: 100%
Bloom Effects: None
Bloom Amount: 100%
Shader Quality: High

Right Column
World Texture Quality: High
World Detail: 100%
Particle Physics: This is Checked, but it's also greyed out, and can't be changed.
Max Particle Count: 30000
Max Particle Fill: 150%
Lightmaps: Unchecked
Water Effects: None

On the Graphics2 tab:
Left Column
Suppress Extra Player FX: Unchecked
Vertical Sync: Checked
Geometry Buffers On: Checked
Shadows On: Unchecked

Right Column
Full-Scene Antialiasing (FSAA): Off
Anisotropic Filtering: 4x
Texture Crispness: Smooth
Gamma: 100%

One thing to note is that the Water Effects setting seems to cause horrible lag for a lot of people. You might want to try only turning that off, and seeing if it helps.

Thank you all. Now for specific graphic card it is a....NVIDIA GeForce 6150SE Graphics.
Its what came with the comp.
Im gonna try to tweak advanced a little bit now, again thanks all!

Edit.

Oh Kheldarn By the way what exactly is tweakCoH?
Is it just an easier way to manage graphics? Or does it give different options altogether?

It lets you modifiy the graphics settings without having to take any performance hits because you're logged in to the game, and that option you just set made CoH go into Molases Mode.

IIRC, it also lets you tweak graphics settings you can't access in-game.

That's what I use it for, but if you have more than one account, you can tell it what account name to display when next you log in. You can set to Full Screen or Windowed Mode. Configure sound settings. Run CoH /demorecord files. Change the font for the game.

And finally, you have the Diagnostics tab. You probably won't use that at all. Personally, I only use it when I find that I'm having trouble connecting to the patch server, and the updater goes Connecting 1, 2, 3... 25, 26, 27, etc. I load up TweakCoH, go to Diagnostics, and click on the Flush DNS button. I can usually connect after that. The updater not connecting doesn't happen very often. Usually only after a large patch, like a new issue. And usually not even then. If that makes any sense... @_@

The GeForce 6150SE is an integrated chip, which means not only is its graphics performance relatively poor to begin with, but it's also sharing memory with the rest of your system, effectively cutting down on the amount of actual RAM your system is able to utilize. I'm fairly certain that none of the integrated graphics solutions currently out there will be able to handle ultra mode with any great success.
