server merg
High population servers have too many idiots. Maybe I haven't been on as many PUGs as I'd get on Freedom, but I also don't have any PUG horror stories or PM conversations with complete jerks like you hear about on the forums.
I'd like to see more villain teams, but not if it means teaming with people who don't understand that villain ATs do NOT play like heroes. It's bad enough for a Defender to play a "heelor" build, but a Corruptor? Just kill me now.
PvP? I find it sucks anyways right now. Melees can still get kited like mad, defense still isn't that good, and mez? What happened there, anyways? Holds are reduced to four second durations BEFORE resistance? And travel suppression kills the uniqueness of this game's PvP. Combined with the unnecessarily rude people in PvP zones, the whole thing seems dumb.
The pro-server merge argument always seems to assume that having a higher population is absolutely a good thing. But frankly, I'd rather solo than team with some fools who don't know how to play.
-Long time lurker, finally posting out of boredom in Calculus class.
Well, given that there's some actual discussion I'll toss aside my initial assumption that it's a troll thread and post my perspective.
On the server merge
No. Just, no. First, the reasons don't really make sense.
Want to PvP with people from other servers? Copy to Test. Or, better yet, push the devs for cross-server PvP - something that has a much better likelihood than a server merge just so you can have more people to pick on in RV*.
As for improving performance... if you have too many people for the hardware currently, then adding more initially hardware seems like the way to go. Until you factor in that said "more hardware" comes with "more people", who are also using said "more hardware". You're more likely to cause problems for the people coming from the server where said hardware was taken than you are to fix the issues for the overcrowded server that it's going to.
On PvP
This is where that * from above gets thrown in: I haven't PvP'd on Guardian. At all. My experience in PvP comes from two challenge matches on Test (just playing around to see how the builds did), the i13 PVP RV testing, and on Infinity - where I PvP rarely. Based on discussion and confessions in the thread I'd imagine that there's a bit of a different feel than there was last night in the 2-v-2 random partner tournament that I was in last night, where the trash talk was fairly lighthearted and obviously joking, and no comments about "you suck" appeared - even in the match where I and my partner were thoroughly pwnd 8-0 (or 10-1 in the second time I faced that same pairing in the finals).
If you want more people to PvP, you need to find ways to make PvP more appealing. Shoving a larger pool of people to run off into the server isn't going to help any - it just means that you get to alienate a larger population in order to keep the same few you have currently.
On Teaming
I've got 9 villains and 4 heroes on Guardian. Of the 4 heroes, only the Fire/Fire Blaster sees much playtime, while I play the villains relatively frequently (usually 2-3 nights a week). Why villains and not heroes? Because when I'm heroside I end up asking - on global, in broadcast, in tells to people who comment about lfm in global or broadcast - and rarely end up on a team... and often switching soon afterwards. When I do get on teams I end up having a great time, though; I started playing on Guardian heroside due to a planned team (the ill-fated Leviathan Guild, if any of you remember it) and stuck around because I liked the personalities.
In comparison, though, villainside I often get more invites than I can accept - either due to limited time or because I already arranged for a team. So I make more villains and let my heroes languish here, instead playing blueside on Infinity. I'm not a "redside snob" or a "blueside snob", I just don't play a MMO to solo: it's boring and repetitive, so I typically only solo when I'm on limited time.
So that's my take on the various side discussions. Now it's time to run off to class.
it has gone from unconscionable to downright appalling that we have no way of measuring our characters' wetness.

If the Devs would go through the Villainside zones and systematically strip out the art so that
they don't make mycomputerstutter just movingaroundthe place, I'd play villains. |
I run middling level machines, and have a few stutters (mostly Grandville is the culprit), but at the HeroCon I got to play on what I would consider a high-end machine. It was as expected; sweetness and no lag at all in Grandville. If I want to play like that; I will have to upgrade my boxes. I cant afford to for now; so I 'get along'. But as with all gaming... you gotta upgrade sometime, kid. You cant play WoW on an Atari 5200 either (although with the cartoony graphics; I am sure someone could probably program it). And that is what you are stuck with; upgrade or die. Sad but true. There is always a point of no return.
I still prefer CoV vice CoH because of the refinements to CoH that CoV brought in as far as gameplay is concerned. And if I have graphics issues; I just crank 'em down.

I sort of resent performance drops so I can be surrounded by trash and grit.
Admittedly, this is subjective.

The visual differences are actually pretty huge - the better textures alone will take up alot more memory, not to mention the geometry taking up more render/processor time.
Floating trash is most likely done in a pretty resource cheap manner I would suspect.
I am an ebil markeeter and will steal your moneiz ...correction stole your moneiz. I support keeping the poor down because it is impossible to make moneiz in this game.

After reading all the replies here and being so upset with this year's Halloween Event, I think I want to try this PvP thing.
I hate PvP.
No seriously........ I hate PvP.
But if I dont give it a try how would I know if it was a good or bad part of CoX. Not that I have tons to pimp out a PvP toon, but I will try. So sometime when looking for people to make some teams, hit me up. Global @ Eaion, or if i'm on I usually watch Guardian and 50 chat, can find me there.
Im not in guardian or 50chats i accidentaly quit, but i'd be glad to duel you. I recently xfered my best pvp toon to freedom but i dont mind using something else

u cant for lvl 50 channel. Ask blade to reinvite u.
After reading all this (And repeatedly calming the feeling of wanting to flame/strangle certain people) I decided to post my bit, though I doubt it counts much.
I personally do NOT want to see a server merger. Why you ask? Well ok lets say, just pulling from the hat here, that the merge to lower servers into one. Like..Champion and Gaurdian. Ok here are the problems I see, and this is just me personally though I am sure others will find this problem too as they look over th servers. I have Ruthia Dascht on Guardian red side. I have Ruthia Dascht on Champion blue side. If they merge the two...which character keeps the name? I've put in a lot of time and effort to both sides of this toon and do NOT wish to lose either of them!
Same can be said for SG/VG. On Guardian Myself and Strife own the VG Garden of Thorns. But on Champion myself and Strife own the SG....Garden of Thorns. Completely differnt sides, completely differnt servers. How to we decide who gets what?
Right now, all I see server mergers doing is giving everyone a head ache. And before someone starts going "More people more people"
I play on Freedom too. And, I hate it there. Unless I'm truely frusterated and looking for a team that makes me want to kill people, I don't play there often. It's nothing against the server it's self, it's just the type of person I am.
As for PvP *shudders* Pyber said it right here. All it takes is a few A#$holes to ruin the first experiances for new people and make them never want to try again. I only go into the PvP zones now at low volume times to get badges. Spent to much time one night being told my build was "Suckish" and how "stupid" I was for building how I did. You beat someone over thehead with that enough, yes they won't come back.
NOW if my first PvP experiances had been from people LIKE Pyber who offer suggestions and complimates to make a PvP toon that stands a chance? Maybe I would have kept trying.
But I ran into to many of the "YOU SUCK" "Don't use that!" "That's the worst build EVER" people to make me change my mind any time soon. One can only handle so much of that before they give up and go back to PvE....where my characters can keep up with some of the best without being smack talked for hours.

merging is the funsauce.
instead of merging lets combine!
@KoolVirus
Yeah sounds great now, then when it comes around and people loose character names and entire super groups are forced to change there names to avoid duplicates. Its great in theory and that is about it. IF they were going to do a server merge there would be so much that would have to go into it that it wouldn't be worth the effort. Sure tie your character name to player account instead of to the server. But...yeah because I want to see ten to twenty different versions of 'Marmalade Boy' running around Atlas Park. Who is talking to who when you call out names for people? Did you mean your friend with that name or one of the other people with the same name? There's a pain I personally don't want to see.
Anything not nailed down is mine, anything i can pry loose wasn't nailed down good enough.
