500th post and topic: Graphics upgrade, but what kind do you want to see?

As long as it LOOKS like its had a graphics update then im happy with whatever. Its the core gameplay im worried about
@Damz Find me on the global channel Union Chat. One of the best "chat channels" ingame!
I'd like to see the best graphics of any mmo out, that would rock. But graphics are the least of CoH's problems.
As everyone's already stated; more, more, more.
I'm aware that there's a few people out there currently running the bare minimum of requirements and can barely see the jagged polygons of their already-blocky characters and refuse to update a PC model that's been outdated for years. I'm aware of these people and I sympathize with them to an extent. |
I know, I know, people want to stone me for this; it's not fair that they should have to update their PC after all this time playing and being a loyal customer only to find that their rig isn't up to specs, but such is life. Paragon needs to think about a larger consumer market, and the market is gaining; the market is growing more and more advanced, and if it's interests don't keep up with it, then the interests won't remain interesting for long.

There might not be one. Devs are human. As such, they often have friends (inside or outside the industry) that they talk shop to. Heck, I could tell you stuff about Copernicus (Curt Schilling's forthcoming MMO) that was never posted on their forums but was said over beers and/or dinner. The first hints of Sigil's imminent demise (as well as the real state of Vanguard) weren't posted on its forums but were talked about in earnest nonetheless. Employees are funny that way. Employees whose paychecks bounce are HILARIOUS in that way (right Perpetual?).

The engine for CoX is actually pretty old, much older and harder to work with than say the Champions Online engine(as far as I'm told anyways) So that means that there are certain built in limitations, so for example the highly coveted "power customization" was something that was asked for for years. It wasn't possible until they created a work around for it(allegedly anyways)

What I'd like to see, besides the typical requests for higher rendering rates with higher tessellation/polygon counts is better support for physics-influenced behavior: moving hair, flowing capes/cloaks/skirts, better destructible environment support. Basically better interactive immersion with the overall environment.

The only thing I want from a graphics upgrade is no increase in the current minimum graphics requirements. If they can still maintain the minimum while improving the graphics, then that would be great!
Wonderin' what a graphics upgrade will do to notorious lag, particularly events like Ritki invasions.
I'd like to see Paragon City look more colorful. Not an easter egg in color, mind you, but something not so gray stone drab. Particularly in Kings Row. I know its low-rent and all, but a few more brownstones with window flowerpots couldn't hurt.
I'd also like to see the conversion of a few rarely entered spots of the city to ethnic neighborhoods, to create more of a draw to those points. Like say, a Little Asia (they're Hmung, right?) for the Tsoo, and a Little Italy for the Family in one of the dead spots in Independence Point. Bonus points if they get their own ethnic music and animations in the sections.
What I would like to see are texture resolution upgrades as well as some model upgrades for costume parts, like the improved gladiator shoulder armor.
@Demobot
Also on Steam
the biggest change i'd want to see is a complete overhaul of the lighting system. It doesn't have to be completely cutting edge, but it should be dynamic and have objects cast shadows that look like said object's shadow instead of a blob or nothing at all. Plus individual fingers and feet that don't look like flesh covered boots.

This is what 3700 heroes in a single zone looks like.
Thanks to @EnsonsDeath for the GVE code that made me VIP again!

But, mostly, hair and tails. The rest is secondary.
Samuel_Tow is the only poster that makes me want to punch him in the head more often when I'm agreeing with him than when I'm disagreeing with him.

Given there are millions of textures in the game - why do I feel like everywhere I look, I see the same three? I see the same objects too (like roof vents, etc) used over and over, just placed slightly at different angles and depths, in every zone. At least Cim was 'very' different.
Does the city age? If so, will their technology improve? Their gas guzzling cars are getting quaintly zestless.
If i'm outside fighting a mob, of supreme elite geared soldiers, how is that an passerby citizen can stroll through and not be "altered" in some form or fashion by the massive explosions going off? Their hair should catch fire, they should fall to their knees, clothes ripped to shreds, and beg for a hero to save them.
We have quite a few layouts for office buildings and caves for instanced missions. But why does every office look the same? They ALL have the same flipping decorator? Every couch the same, every plant, table, computer, ledge, fence, carpet, cieling, and elevator look identical. zzzOMG.
Not wanting to leave here on a down-note. I tried CO. They have so many cool nuggets. They have excellent animations tied to travel powers. And, their character creator blows CityOf out of the water. Nonetheless, guess what I'm playing! Cov of course! Why you ask? Good question! Boiled down to game-play. CO has HORRID gameplay from both a utility and technical standpoint. Secondly, CityOf has people forming teams and working together, vs. CO that has almost a 100% lack of player to player interaction.
Given that, CityOf really has an excellent game, to which I would love to see a makeover/facelift done on. Don't bother bringing it up to speed. Blow us out of the water by adding rideable (and varyingly textured) motor boats that have gun turrets attached, that disable all of our powers except for the turret unless we hop out. Weeeeee!
Omg I went so far off topic. lawls.

And blinking eyes, and more realistic bust shapes, and turning waists.

Anyway, I think of all those things, I want fingers the most. I can't explain why.

More polygons, higher resolution textures, and more animated weapons - even expanding into animated costume pieces. Yes, including flowing hair, but also pistons, rotating satellite, animated guns, etc.
I think that would be my list, sorted by priority. Oh wait, lighting... the lighting in this game at times can be average to very bad. I think that would be a nice upgrade before all of the previously mentioned. Larger draw distance would be in there somewhere, most likely low on the list or it could just be lumped into "more polygons."

I'ma throw my vote onto a hands/feet overhaul.

Trust the computer. The computer knows all.
I would like an auto-interpolating animation system (almost sure that's not the right name) that supported things like auto generating "in-between" animation frames or interpolate multiple frames for dynamic animation speedups and slowdowns of any existing animation. In theory this would allow for nearly any animation to be used as alternative animation to any attack as it would automatically speed up or slow down to fill the appropriate cast time. Would also allow for balance tweaks on cast times without requiring reanimating attacks.
Also would like a modular system that somehow separated upper and lower body animation to support for on-the-fly running/standing/hovering attack modes that require just one upper body animation to be modified instead of multiples.

I think cov is too gloomy... I think it needs a make over.
