Just as a note the contest submissions rules wanted folders attached. Yahoo doesn't attach folders, only files. Since this is my registered email, I attached the files and hoped for the best.

Also, if there is no custom villain group I hope I won't be DQ'd before the entry is even looked at since I didn't have one to attach. (It's a canon arc - no custom mobs.)

Very frustrating since I didn't realize I needed screenshots until I was ready to submit then had to rush through my arc and get them in time to submit.

It asks for files. The *.storyarc is always needed, *.cvg. and *.critter only if you have customized groups and custom enemies. Nowhere does it say to attach folders.

Whew! I attached the folders so that's good.

Is there any indication why they want the folders and are not playing them off the game itself? Someone could send in mission folders that aren't the same as the story on live.

Also on a sidenote I didn't enter the contest. I want to wish you all good luck. I know several of the entrants have done a smart bang up job and the judges are sure to be tested on the decision. In my book I think you all deserve a Standing O for just for entering.

Good Luck To all my Fellow Heroes and Villains/ Authors writers. May the best Arc win.

It will be quite challenging to get through them all in that amount of time.

I hope that there are plenty of snacks and caffeine available.

Anyone want to guess at how many thousand entries they will get?

10k? 50k? 100k? 200k?
I guess they didn't get many after all.

If this thread is any indication, they probably didn't get more than 1k entries. I'm guessing probably not even 250.

That's pretty sad if that is the case. It is such a great system. I guess the exploitation that went on for so long really took its toll.
Hopefully, after a year or two, the MA will be running at full-steam because players are able to find fun missions to run and have fun crafting their own.

Why is that sad?

I took a look at some of the arcs that I've played, and some of my own, and I felt mine were just not up to snuff.

Many in my sg felt the same way.

Just because the entirety of the pbase isn't crashing the mail servers with Terabytes of submissions doesn't mean it's a failure.

Why assume anything based on this thread? I sent my arc in even though it probably sucked and I bet a lot of other people did too.

I think the fear is that each country would have a different specific requirement, like the Canadian one mentioned. Paragon is an American company, so path of least resistance would be that they target Americans.
It would be nice if international people could enter the competition, even without gaining physical prize.

Or have it stated for what it is more accurately; the first annual American Architect awards.

I wouldn't say outraged, but more annoyed.

Your augment if it can be called that, of 'see how you can do it' is pretty darn juvenile. I expect people whose job it is to manage that better than generic fan #2.

Almost as meritless as 'they done it before like this so shut up'. Who'd think people would put feedback in a feedback thread.

Anyone googling "international contest" will see many international competitions. International song writing, photography. Hundards and thousands of International contests. The key in my unproffessional opinion, would be offer some contest without physical rizes.

I don't suffer from altitis, I enjoy every minute of it.

Thank you Devs & Community people for a great game.

So sad to be ending ):

250 entries would be a lot. Someone has to play them.

I know many people who wrote stories for MA. Only one other than I is participating in this contest. My guess is that, as the poster above said, people compared their arcs to the best ones they had played and felt they weren't good enough to submit.

To be submitted an arc has to be marked as "final". I'm betting winners will be Devs Choiced. If an arc is still in the process of being tweaked then submitting it wouldn't be in the writer's best interests.

Well for one thing, look at the post above yours.

That person and their friends didn't submit because they didn't think they were good enough. That is especially sad to me.
Their arcs were probably better than many of those that were submitted.

I'll tell you a secret.
Often times the quality of your first submission has nothing to do with your success in being published.
A long time ago before I was published the first time, an editor told me "Your not as good as some people that only submitted one time and were never published, but you are a lot better than some people that are getting published because they kept on submitting their work."
If you only submit once, there is a good chance that your work will never get noticed regardless of how good it is. If you keep submitting works, they will not only get better because you are honing your skills as you create more works, you also start to get name recognition with editors because they keep seeing your submissions. The editors are always going to pick out the writers that they have had experience with first, but the more you put in front of them - the more likely they will say - "hey, this guys submits stuff a lot. I'll give one of his stories a shot and see how it is."

If you were around last year, you know about the huge thread in regards to last years costume contest. This thread hasn't even made it to 10 pages yet.
If people were excited about this contest, there would be a lot more chatting going on.

According to my calendar today is the 20th, not the 22nd.

I'm in the US, but I like the idea of a contest especially for overseas players as a way of highlighting their presence in the community. It's a way of bringing people together.

It could be called the "Architect of Merit" contest, with the winner having their arc boosted up to Dev's Choice status and a blurb about the arc published on the front page of the website. If there are enough players from the different regions, there could even be country-specific awards (like "Architect of Merit: Australia, 2010").

As for winning swag ... I was looking at what was being offered and wasn't really tempted. I mean, it's nice for Paragon Studios to be running contests and such, and giving prizes, but I don't think I'd even bother putting an ATI 3650 graphics card in my system. I'm fine with ATI, but that's an old card! The 5750 would be the comparable current model, and the 4650 would be last year's model. The 3650 is from 2 years ago and I think it is the oldest generation of graphics cards being actively supported in drivers by ATI. These are so old I'm pretty sure the price on them has actually gone up! lol

Maybe it's the keyboard, mouse, and the rest that would be the real value for someone. I don't know. Or maybe people just like free stuff.

As for winning the contest, clearly it's important to some people. I'm sure they have their reasons. Probably they just want people to play and appreciate their arcs. And let's face it, it's hard to guide people to your arcs.

My impression is that in the beginning people played AE looking for new content. When they found a lot of incomplete work with spelling errors, nonsensical plots and broken features they stopped looking. AE became primarily about farms. Now the farming is greatly reduced, and people still can't easily find the better arcs. Not many players are looking any more, I suspect. I have 3 arcs up, and while they are decently rated for quality according to the star ratings there's been no one playing any of them for months.

Now I'm aware there are forum threads that are supposed to guide you to the AE gold. But I think the in-game system needs improvement if it requires you to go to the forum to find out which arcs are considered "good." Also, just because someone reviewed an arc and decided it was good doesn't mean it really was. Everyone has their own way of measuring such things, and I can't say that I've been terribly impressed with any arc I've seen mentioned in the review threads. Nor have I been impressed with the few Dev's Choice arcs I've played. Maybe I've just been unlucky in my choices. Maybe I can't be impressed with ANY product of the highly restricted MA toolset. Or maybe I have +resist on my impressability that is impossible to overcome. (Quite possible.)

Anyway, back to the original complaint voiced on this thread - about allowing players from nations other than US/Canada to get recognition through a contest - why not remove the awards and simply give honors to the lucky winner?

Or if you can do it, give an in-game award, like a badge and/or some merits. Say 100 merits to each "Architect of Merit" ...?

Just my 2 inf, plus a little spare change.

Or, it's just further proof that the majority of players are more concerned about XP and drops than they are about some random guy's "really cool story."

My render was by Seikon she turned a verywell done comission of the character into both an Avatar and Sig. She is so cool that way.

If the winner for Arc of the Year is an arc published sometime in the month of April (say, one of those storyarcs that had a headstart with the Closed Beta, like 80% of the "Developer's Choice" arcs) -- I'll toss my socks into the laundry, and treat myself to a pizza instead, having "called it"...

[An arc "republished" in the next two weeks doesn't count (unless it's pretty obviously been republished due to all the I16 MA changes)...]

If an arc published between I15 and October 1st wins the contest, well, they'll have my sincere congratulations and respect for their creative ability. (And, yeah, I might even lose a little bit of my deep cynicism about the Mission Architect system, and how it has impacted the game.)
So, pizza it is...

(Though, both the "Best Hero Story" AND "Best Villain story" were published AFTER I15, on July 16 and July 8, respectively...)

Still, sincere congratulations to the five authors...I will be trying out each of your arcs in the next week or so, just to see what they are all about (played "Blight" already and quite enjoyed it!)

Hope you all get a lot of fresh positive feedback, don't let the one-star bandits get you down!!!

Cheers,

COLD BOB
