Too many tankers!
Thanks for the comments, I was just wondering if in the end game sonic was not as good. Seems like everyone is making fire blasters.
I'm really enjoying this game I have not tried City of Villains yet, but I might this weekend.
Sonic has resistance debuffs - which means that you decrease the enemy's ability to resist the damage you do to them. End result - you do more damage per "hit". You can see this if you observe your numbers after a successful hit or two.
Blue sonic powers... hmm, have to give that a shot on my Dark / Sonic defender...
You will see a lot of fire blasters as the set "looks" like it does more damage, and many folks who play blasters want to feel... well... blastery. It also has a very early AoE power, and no matter what, you just can't help feeling like a bad*** when you shoot a fireball into a group and see all those orange damage numbers float over their heads.
Of course the flip side is that if you don't kill them, then you will soon be seeing many RED numbers floating over YOUR head. Then the pavement rushing up to meet your face. Then the inside of a Hospital. Hopefully, you'll have Viv as your nurse.

A problem easily rectified with color customization. A blue-tinted Sonic Blaster I teamed with was some of the coolest effects I've seen. The "classic" Sonic blasts are indeed pretty boring, being translucent, but toying around with the colors makes for some very nice effects.

OOoo oooo ooo.
And then he heals people who aren't even wounded with his single target heal. And he stacks 2-4 clear minds on the tankers and scrappers, but not a single one on the peace bringer or blaster. Or never use their attacks when there's no one to be buffed/healed. |
Can't let those tanks get mezzed. would be a disaster for the team.

Hi, I also am new to the game. From the descriptions of charcters I picked a sonic/fire blaster for my 1st character, it seems fun, however I do not see many sonic blasters on the game. Am I missing something, is this a poor power choice?
|
Second, don't worry about any particular power set. Some are weaker than others but for you to want to keep playing this game, you have to find a character that you want to play. Early on sonics were rare because people didn't like the noise they made over their speakers. Sonics can be one of those "game changing" sets because they bring more than just damage.
Keep in mind that there are a lot of possibilities for powerset selection. You can't base how many of a given powerset there are on limited teaming. You could spend a week not seeing an Archery blaster, and then get on a team with 3 of them, for example.
Sonic blast is a fine set. |

I imagine Grey Pilgrim is just twitching to respond to this thread.

Yeah, I saw this when I was checking in the other day to see what was up in my absence. I wouldn't have minded commenting, either.

I imagine there are a lot of tanks starting from customization, and because a lot of people see them as a potential farmer, unfortunately. It probably wouldn't be faster to farm bosses on an 8-man map with a solo tanker, but stacking it with lieuts and minions would probably be quite fast. Most Tanks have good AOE potential, and the ability to take the punishment of an 8-man mob. I know my Fire, DB, and War Mace tankers can take care of a lot of mobs at once.
But it'd be hard to say if there is a lot of any type of AT just from your own experience. There is the whole anecdotal issue, and just random odds. I have a lot of nights where I'll form a team, and most of the people lft are the same AT as me. Doesn't matter if I'm a Blaster, Controller, or Tanker.
So play what you want and have fun! Enjoy that in this game where you can do it. Playing Battlefield 2 the past couple weeks has reminded me how unforgiving or unbalanced some other games can be, in comparison.

Thought they changed the mag and clear mind behavior so you couldn't do that.

They were going to change it that way so CM couldn't stack and I remember the outcry about the MSTF and GW how it will be impossible (and I have seen one STF where that is not true anymore). I can't recall exactly, but there was some bug with the change and it has been kept in the original form, with stacking (detoggling when zoning maybe?). GW's hold is set to 100 mag by design and not to be resisted as I recall also. So I am wondering if some little changes are in store for the future.
A tank needs CM to manage GW hold? Hmm...interesting. I remember one time while on a STF that I was able to survive the hold and i'm just a measly dm/regen scrapper. Of course, i had a very proficient healer backing me up (yay FMP!) and lets say my capped hp helped a bit but I would guess that a tanker could take the heat more than i could.

There's a difference between surviving the hold and breaking the mez. You can survive the hold if the healers are paying attention. However, I don't think you have much of a way to BREAK the hold.

The real issue is the hapless spining in the air while you twiddle your thumbs; the damage isn't that big a deal (as a Tank), but it's the utter lack to do anything but usually watch GW turn her attention on everyone else while you're practicing your Pirouettes.
I've already forgotten about most of you

Depends. Not sure if the hold itself can kill a tanker or if she piles on a few attacks on top; I've seen held tankers die many a time.

Eh, I didn't say to break the hold, only about resisting it through stacking CM.
And NiVra and Hamster, I agree. Now that I think about it, I have been on at least 2 STFs with no status protection powers (CM/ID/Thaw/Clarity/any others I can't think of?) available. One was with 2 rad controllers and myself as a dark def. We debuffed and spam healed on the tank. The second was my dark/storm STF. We just debuffed and spam healed whoever got held.
Depends. Not sure if the hold itself can kill a tanker or if she piles on a few attacks on top; I've seen held tankers die many a time.

If the tank dies, someone dropped the ball.

This was before toggle suppression, but it would still effect sets that utilize offensive toggles (such as Rad Emission, Dark Miasma, etc).
* Hmm, this makes me wonder... status protection toggles for meleers are set not to self stack, but they don't suffer from this problem. No idea why it's different.

I've seen Tankers die from the hold and I've seen them kept alive. I can't say how hard it is to keep them alive through it, though.
Let me clarify..
I have use CM and fortitude on the tank when it was needed I.E. fighting GeeDubs Recluse, Reichsman and other tough to beat hard hitting AV's.
But fighting normals mobs I only really make sure those that need mezz protection get it.
It's been my experience that Blasters being the aggro magnets they can be get fortitude first then Controllers then Scrappers.
On my Emp I can perma Fort three people and almost perma AB one. The AB usually goes to a Blaster or whomever needs the end more.

There are times that even CM is necessary on a tank. Stacking mezzes can overcome their protection. On the STF, you need to stack CM to keep GW from mezzing a tank.

Would have posted this myself if Tatmai hadn't said it first.
And as Voo said, Fort on the tank makes them that much more uber.

...And accusing him of being "part of the problem" isn't very nice -- he's a new player (which you acknowledged by welcoming him to the game)....
|
A player playing a tank and saying that they are only being able to find tanks to team with is part of the problem with only finding tanks to team with.
It isn't accusing anyone of anything. It is completely valid.
If I take chips to a party and everyone else has brought chips, I'm certainly part of the problem of only having chips at the party.
New or not. Truth is truth.
Is it nice to point out that someone is part of the problem that they say exists?
I would want to know if I'm part of the problem.
So I'll state this again. If you have to insult other people's posts to prove your point, you must not have a very valid point to make.
I'm not a snob because I generally don't want to have tankers and scrappers on my team. That's my choice. I'm not calling anyone else a snob because of the way that they play this game.
Yeah, I did say that the people that were using exploits were cheating and, therefore, they are cheaters. People that break the rules in a game are cheating. That's a fact.
So before you throw snob around make sure you are willing to team with anyone without regards to anything - level, ability, age, years of playing, archetype, etc. - also be willing to do anything any team leader wants you to do - regardless of level, content, etc.
The OP is a new player here, but they stated that they are not new to MMORPG's. They appeared to want an honest answer, so I gave them my views honestly.
I really can't believe that people would rather have me lie and candy-coat what I have to say ... apparently, many posters (kind of like "many tanks") think that I should ... but I won't.
If I see people expressing one point of view and I have a different point of view, I'm going to express my point of view along with information in regards to why I have that point of view.
True. Power customization has really changed the way I feel about a few characters; especially rad and fire powers.
