Nintendo Hard
I usually ramp up the difficulty on console game to begin with. One game I cannot do that with is The Ninja Gaidens. Even on Nintendo they were hard. I bought Ninja Gaiden Sigma for PS3.....I "accidentally" broke my controller because I was so furious! LOL! All in all it was still fun. Especially when I eventually beat it....on normal. LOL!
Dungeon Crawl. Been playing for over a year and I've only once come close to winning.
Having Vengeance and Fallout slotted for recharge means never having to say you're sorry.
I tried to avoid mentioning roguelikes. Dwarf Fortress was the notable exception, since there is no tutorial to let you know how to play the fortress mode. It's all trial and failure, and you probably will fail the first times early on in the lifetime of the fortress. After that, you will fail for other reasons.
If you want Nintendo Hard, I'll mention the Etrian Odyssey series, and the game Dark Spire, and Class of Heroes. Class of Heroes does not give you any equipment except the worst stuff, and you get to craft the other stuff. Once you do, however, it's great. The beginning part is bad.
Etrian Odyssey is notable because of the FOE. Yep, they're called that. You'll probably run into one when you're out of TP (technique points) and cannot heal damage or status problems. You will surely die.
ATs to 50 - TA/A Def, Nrg/Nrg Blaster, EM/EA Brute, WS,ELM/ELA Stalker
B-17 Bomber for the Intellevision.
Alien for the C-64.
@bpphantom
The Defenders of Paragon
KGB Special Section 8
Also, and I am not making this up.
I beat E.T. on the 2600. Took me two years or so to figure it out, and on easy, but I did it.
Arc #345863 - When The Bough Breaks
"Curse you Perry the Plata...wait, is that Love Handel?" - Dr. Heinz Doofenshmirtz, Phineas and Ferb
Battletoads. I saw someone mention this one earlier. I've beaten the speeder bike stage, I've beaten Volkmyer's Inferno, but Karnath's lair? Always skipped it. And The Dark Queen is the CHEAPEST boss I've ever fought.
I had an easier time beating Star Tropics 2!
Top Gun...ya know? I never had a problem with that game.
Now, if they removed the Respawn closets? So you could only respawn after the end of each stage? That would probably kick it up into more nintendo-esque territory. Those closets are so cheap.
Also it pisses me off when people want to kill each other at the end of a level in order to heal. That is so inhumane! It makes me so happy when a horde comes and devours the one last standing guy after he plugs the whole team.
EDIT: Forgot the other thing I was gonna mention. Pretty much the whole Mega Man series.
I mean, yes, it's possible to beat them, and some people are naturally REALLY GOOD at MegaMan games, but to be Nintendo Hard, I didn't think it was required to be unbeatable, per se.
Jurassic Park on the Sega Genesis. But only if you're playing as the Raptor.
|
The end.
I ended up beating that game as the Raptor 'bout a week after my dad bought it for me, way back when. Grant, though... that took me a few months, and only because I didn't realize the solution was right in front of me.
If you want Nintendo Hard, I'll mention the Etrian Odyssey series, and the game Dark Spire, and Class of Heroes.

That mysterious orange thing is an FOE.
That thing that you aggroed is an FOE.
When you don't have any TP, there's an FOE.
Even during a boss fight, there's an FOE.
When your Protector's dead, there's an FOE.
... I still haven't hit the grindstone long enough for me to get past the FOE-only floor in Etrian Odyssey 2.
When I beat the land speeder stage of battletoads (Solo, dear god never in two player) my friends watching and I cheered like we had just won the Super Bowl or something.
Then I died in Stage 4. I've watched speed runs of Battletoads and seeing how little of the game I actually got through frightened me. |

Holy...someone else had that? It always became a race to see who could blow up the Nostromo for me. Plus, you couldn't ditch that damned cat!!
Castlevania II: Simon's Quest wasn't Nintendo Hard, but it was Nintendo stupid for forcing a Guide Dang It as the manual never told you what all of the items did, and the localization (i.e. the translation) was awful so you rarely understood what the villagers were telling you.
I recently replayed the game and it's actually fairly easy if you know where to go and how to use the items. The secret of Deborah cliff literally took me years to find out about. After the frustrating amount of time I spent just trying to get to the end, Drac is a total freaking pushover. Simon's Quest is actually probably the easiest incarnation of him in the series. So, Nintendo Hard, no. Controller-crushing, TV-smashing, console-kicking frustrating, oh hellsyeah

Final Fight. I did complete it, several times over, but you had to play it about a thousand times to be able to do it in less than 20 continues.

I just bought an XBox a month or so ago. Today's mega blockbuster games are mind-numbingly easy. I could've beaten Mass Effect with my eyes closed. Now granted, I'm playing my 3rd playthrough just to get all the achievements, and it's more grinding than challenging, but still.
Gears of War - mostly easy. Mass Effect - mostly easy. Left 4 Dead - mostly easy. |
Oh, by the way, you can revisit most of your frustrations in your handy browser by going to: Virtual NES.

Last generation did not have this problem as much. It is much more apparent nowadays.
I guess you could buy DLC to get a game to last longer (since some of the longest modern games top out at 20 hours max)....not a fan of that at all though. If I pay 60 dollars for a game, I want a complete product, not a half-finished game that only looks prettier, but pales in comparison when it comes to content to its predecessors. (Looking at you, King Of Fighters 12.) That, however, is for another thread. I could go on for hours.
(Bought this up in another thread a few weeks ago: If only the price of a game were determined on how long a game lasted.....I feel bad for anyone who paid full price for Heavenly Sword, only to finish it in a few days.)
I just decided to stay in the era of PS2 and before. Screw this generation.

I went back to college a few years ago. During my days there, I got to know the younger generation of nerds and gamers. I found that while they were just about as good as I was in the newer games (Call of Duty, 3d fighters, etc), when we went to a 2d game or a throwback of some sort (side-scrolling shooters, platformers, Street Fighter 4, old school 2d fighters), I was suddenly far better than them.
There's some sort of huge difference in the new and old. Precise timing and bullet hell gameplay isn't rewarded like it used to be. Instead of timing that dragon punch to counter the guy who jumped at you, the newer games tend to reward hours of practicing borderline exploits in order to do five hour long combo strings. You don't need fast precise movements so much as you need "twitch" reflexes to fire at your enemy as soon as possible. The entire concept of bullet hell throws the younger generation of gamers for absolute loops, as evidenced whenever we played Aegis Wing, a VERY VERY easy (compared to old school) side scrolling shooter on xbox live.
Sure, I kinda sound like grandpa gamer over here, but the kids today seem to have been brought up on entirely different mechanics than the older gamers were. They aren't necessarily worse, they're just not as exposed to a variety of gameplay as some of us. Hopefully retro gaming enjoys resurgences often enough to let them in on what they missed, though.

I once was behind a kid and his dad buying a game. His dad was picking out a few games that I wouldn't have minded trying, only to have his son say "don't get that. The graphics are horrible." I really wanted to head-desk the nearest wall.
I remember games being fun, regardless of what the graphics looked like. (Nostalgia kicking in now....lol)

Another problem that I see is that most gamers these days (Mostly the ones under the age of 19) think that graphics are the only thing that make a game.

Its not just gamers, non gamers are being affected as well. My girlfriend has never really been what we'd call a gamer, mostly casual play here and there. She's been playing Fable 2 over at a friends house. Long story short. I dusted off the N64 the other week and popped in Zelda Ocarina of time.
Tried my best to get her to play it, told her all about the epic adventure that awaits. An adventure that spans time and is easy to pick up. I felt sure if she could play Fable she'd have no trouble getting into Zelda.
The response...
This looks like a coloring book! I can't play this kiddie garbage!
/headdesk
/Facepalm
It's not about the graphics people, its about the gameplay.
She's been spoiled by Xbox and its shiny textures...

The game that had a giant mountain of poo as a boss, that sang an opera as you throw toilet paper at him to defeat him?
That Conkers?

Yep thats the one. I even tried explaining to her that it dealt with mature subjects, lampooned lots of movies and had lots of things to do.
Her response.
"Its a cartoon squirrel!?!?!" She couldn't get over the 'kiddie' look of it.
Now she's begging me to buy her an Xbox so she can play 'real' games.
I tried to suppress my nerdrage and asked what she meant by 'real'
She said "You know, games that are dark and real looking not cartoonish."
