I remade my Pollution control concept (Earth/Storm/Ice).

The results are as ugly as I wished lol! Specially happy about the new graphics for EQ.

I made a new troller for this update to see if anyone gets annoyed enough to comment. She's a Fire/Emp and all of her powers are very ohgodmyeyes pink; think of it as trolling the WE NEEDZ A HE4L0RZ! teams. I'm about five minutes away from getting her second costume slot and I'm thinking I might color her powers on that one less eye-searing. But I'm disappointed because so far the only comments I've gotten were:

"Everything's so pink, I feel like I'm in a little girl's bedroom."

"Pink fire... nice touch." (I'm sure there was some sarcasm in there)

I think the revealing moment will come after a PuG and I tackle our first gorup and then I ask innocently "Does the pink bother anyone, would you guys rather I switch to the other costume?"

I've played two other trollers that have gotten to 30 and I think 27 (both were Emp strangely) and I almost never play blueside, so this issue has encouraged me to check out blueside for a change and so far I'm not regretting it. Still, I'm missing my MMs; we'll see how long this fling lasts...

I game my yellow-and-brown clad Earth/Kin orange & yellow /kin powers. Her Earth powers are as close to yellow stone as I could get; her Hold is a yellow crystal effect. Besides making it easier to tell which is which it creates a nice geode effect, with the crystals embedded in rock.

Just a note: I'd advise everyone to keep one of their costumes as the go-to normal colors, in case people find the custom choices difficult to play with.

I've actually kicked people from teams who have over-the-top or annoying to the eyes color schemes and refuse to (or can't) change them. The inky-dark trails on some buffs, the loud pink and gold EKG's on sonic dispersion, burning pink and bright purple combos on standing effects, etc can be a nightmare for others.

If teammates complain about it interfering with gameplay, have a backup costume handy. Preferably one that is just the normal power scheme.

Let's be clear. I've kicked people for making the gameplay experience intolerable for the rest of the team, after asking the person to remedy the situation by reverting their colors to something more tolerable.

And my point was to advise people to have the reversion option available.

No,that was pretty clear. I guess I just haven't run into anything intolerable yet.

My Mind/Kin has a rather bold blue/lime/yellow costume, and I redid his powers in a blue-green (which wasn't far from standard for the kin powers).

I have an Ill/TA where I tinted things red. I ended up scaling things back a little though, as the red was a little much on spectral wounds w/o a little white. I also tweaked Phantom Army, as I liked the dark palette for their costumes, but didn't like it for their powers (didn't know it carried over).

My son made a Grav/FF with purple colors, it looks good. I'll have to go through each of my grav/storm's five costumes (same costume, different colors) to tweak those.

I'm using Earth on a dom too, and really like my blue and orange crystals.

Suggestions:
Super Packs Done Right
Influence Sink: IO Level Mod/Recrafting
Random Merit Rolls: Scale cost by Toon Level

You might want to consider an Ill/Rad -- closest thing Blue-side has to a MM. You get Phantom Army at 18. AND it would not be an Emp . . . Take a look at my guide in my sig.

I rolled an Ice/Cold Controller the other day, and she's currently at Lv. 12. She's been having some endurance isssues, but keep in mind she only just reached the level where I can buy DO's. I went with a white and light blue scheme for her powers, which has worked quite well, especially with her shields being a lot more transparent and less obscuring than the default colors.

Although Arctic Fog looks terrible in the new colors I chose for the rest of the powers because you can clearly see the straight line where the effect starts flowing down from her waist. It's very unnatural looking, like a skirt made of fog flowing out of a hula hoop hovering around her. I'll have to play around with the effect for that to make it less visible, or hope the devs adjust the effect to be seamless no matter what colors are used.

Getting kicked is half the fun of trolling!

But I kid, I'm not really that obnoxious and would be happy to switch over if asked (and I did just create the 2nd costume sans pink powers for her today; sadly though EMP is only a tintable set and reds still look somewhat pinkish). But really, if someone ragekicked me without at least asking me to swap or something likewise polite first, I wouldn't miss that team too much.

As for trying another type of troller, I still have something of an aversion to playing blueside, no firm idea why. If I were to tally up all my alts, probably 80% of my heroes never make it past 10th. I already have two other lowbie villains on the same server my present troller is on that I'm just itching to get to but haven't the time for right now. But if I do crap out on this troller, I'll give definitely steer clear of EMP next time.

Or, in the case of my Fire/Rad : Anything BUT the default power scheme

In the words of one of my SG mates "Aaaah. Everything is orange and lime".

On my Fire/Rad, I made one of the costumes "flipped" (fire in green, rad in red/orange.) it looks pretty kewl, especially the little toxic green monkeys spewing pollution.

I just love that Solaria, my fire/rad gal, now has all her solar powers one glorious sunny color!

Not a troller, but my oldest toon from the first day the game went live, Neferteri, is an egyptian costumed Storm/Elec defender. I made all her storm powers look like sand storms and changed her lightning attacks to a regal gold. She looks AMAZING!

Mumoria, my mummy themed Ill/TA gal now has spooky green ghosties that help her with her work, and match her glowing green eyes.

For my new ice/cold troller, I went with darker gray tones for her powers. I love that I can make the ice shields are nearly invisible now!

Or just use good color sense. Being sensible and avoiding clashing colors will avoid most of those complaints. I spend a lot of effort finding colorings that actually look good while fitting my character concepts. I've only gotten positive comments on my power colorings so far.

I suggest not only paying attention to how it looks in the costume editor but also taking your character out on a test run (on mobs that are no threat to you) to judge how the powers look together. I ask friends for opinions (they're generally honest about whether a look works or doesn't work).

Besides, I saw someone comment somewhere on those boards that before Power Customization, Fire Armor was unplayable for him because of his phobia of fire. A change of color was enough to make it not trigger his phobia. Apparently Thermal buffs were a problem, too. I've seen complaints about Sonic Resonance, there's that default bright orange/lime green combo Carnifax got comments on for his Fire/Rad, and default ice shields are somewhat obscuring of costume details. So default colors aren't always best.

If I got complaints that my color selections made the game unplayable for someone, I wouldn't consider it as a sign that I should create an alternate slot with default colors. I'd consider it a sign that I should improve my color selections, since aesthetics are crucial to me and I try to hone my characters to look their best. Besides, I honestly have no slots to spare on anything that doesn't fit the character concept--I tend to use up all of my costume slots.

Just use good judgement. Of course, mileages might vary and not everyone has good color judgment. I suggest either subtle colors or default colors for those people.

Status report on my original post, I went ahead and created that Earth/Cold Controller and the results were great. I used the crystal theme with his Primary, with a very pale tan color, fading to white on the facets of the crystals, and then made the /Cold pale tan as well. His ice shields are a pretty close match to the crystals (more transparent, but that just makes the costume underneath easier to see) and his "snow" powers look like dust storms. So he looks like his power concept, he has the ability to telekinetically move and crystallize the ground around him. Teamed with a Kin/Energy Defender with all her powers tinted blue/white, for control of energy, and they make a perfect team. (Their costumes are brown and blue, so even that matches)

I like the suggestion to have a "toned down" costume for those effects that are too extreme, but I don't think any of my effects are that extreme. In fact, as I mentioned, I think the costume of the player underneath my "crystal shield" is clearer than with the original Ice Shield. Probably the only one that is really distracting is my gold Illusion/Rad Controller, and I find the bright colors help pick out her anchors. If anyone has a problem, though, she has a secret identity costume, and I made her powers very muted with that costume, so I guess I already have a "toned down" version available.

Fighting on a team with 3--count'm--3 Earth controllers using Purple Crystal theme, Green Crystal theme, and Leopard Print Lava theme.

Teammate, "Incoming!"
Me, as all three trollers have hit them with Stone Cages, "I don't see an ambush, all I see is modern art."

Went the other way (non-concept, all technical) with my /rad, colored the Radiant infection yellow and purple, and enervating field Orange/Red, so the team would be able to visually tell what things were being debuffed.

Also made the sonic resonance "Disruption field" red. Partially so the team could finally appreciate that little gem of a power (since they knew it existed) and partially because I could refer to them as the red rings of death rather than the sonic donut.

I colored my Earth/Storm's stuff greyish-brown, makes the storm looks like dirt or sandstorm. Excellent.

I really enjoy the customization to make the powers look more like they're coming from the character, match with the costume if that makes sense, etc. But I also ran into the ability to use Power Customization to tell a progressive story with my character, and I'm wondering if anyone else is doing so. Let me explain...

My Mind/Cold character is ElfKing (ErlKing from the famous poem was taken, but Elf is the translation of Erl). Backstory is that he was captured in a PPD sweep of Perez Park, and scientists nano-shackled him (there are also physical shackles in place from PPD) to use him as an experimental crimefighter. As you can imagine, the use of his powers for fighting crime will eventually break down the nanoshackles, and in later levels he will break free and return to his evil splendor. You'll notice his powers, that in the early levels now are whitish and green (for his inherent elfy mind control) and standard icy cold powers will gradually introduce more colors like bits of red and orange as his inner conflict ensues into his later stages. If timed right, these later powers will be most active at the time Going Rogue is released, and ElfKing will, well, break free of all hero shackles and return to the villainous side. Oh, and his Patron Pool powers will of course be all Fire related as he unleashes holy hell on his previous captors.

I'm very excited by this concept, and despite so many peoples' obsession with min-maxing, including my own sometimes, I find that a great concept and story makes playing any character SOOOO much more enjoyable.

Thank you for reading.
