Why Make Others?
Why make others?
Thats easy of course competition always makes products better or makes them fail it's that simple.
Going Rogue and power customization is better and will(personnal opinion)give this game an even longer life.
I suppose it's just a simple quest to make more money and become famous,or there is a bigger picture I am not seeing,but..why make other super-hero online games when(I believe it to be so)CoX is on its way to becoming fantastically superior, and unbeatable?
(snip) |
Why wouldnt other people/companies try to enter the same markert for games?
I don't suffer from altitis, I enjoy every minute of it.
Thank you Devs & Community people for a great game.
So sad to be ending ):
I guess that question is the equivalent of asking "Why have more than one choice in":
Operating Systems
Video Game Consoles
Office Suites
Image Editors
Media Players
Cars
MP3 Players
Restaurants
etc etc etc...
I suppose it's just a simple quest to make more money and become famous,or there is a bigger picture I am not seeing,but..why make other fantasy online games when(I believe it to be so)EQ is on its way to becoming fantastically superior, and unbeatable?
In my opinion, the kind of success that EQ is making, dosent need you to be detoured away with other ideas. If I were in charge,I would spend all my time and resources into making EQ the best, and most fullfilling fantasy experience that I could.I wouldnt even think about going elsewhere. All of the ideas in World of Warcraft should be implemented into EQ!I do understand it would take time to do so;I do understand that it wont be overnight, but the wait would be worth it once they do enter the game! Just a question I pose to you,and something to just think and mull over in your heads as well. Albeit, you guys have done some things I do agree with and some stuff I do not agree with, You guys have done very good work so far in EQ,and I am supporting you 100% I urge you all to come back to Norrath, where you all belong! Never the End : ) |
This kind of post happened ALL the time when WoW was in the works. This is the same type of situation. Different does not necessarily mean better. CoH is in no danger, and competition is healthy. Some will rise, some will fall. With CO now and DCUO upcoming, it's just more choices for someone to find their perfect game, and that's all that really matters - people playing what they want, how they want.
Maybe it's just me, but it sounds like the OP thinks that Cryptic is still a partial owner of CoX.

Screw it, lets just go back to pong. Seriously, there's a few hundred thousand variants of monopoly (I just saw 3 new kinds in blockbuster night before last!), and yet they keep making them and no one asks 'Why?'... Asking why to make another game, that's drastically different than this one, is a silly question.

Samson_Sledge,
I believe you're under the mistaken assumption that Cryptic Studios still has stake and development roles in City of Heroes, which is untrue.
Back in 2007, Cryptic sold their share of CoH to NCSoft, who in turn hired most of the developers working on the game at that time and created a new studio, called NC Northern California, aka NCNC. Later, the studio was officially renamed Paragon Studios.
Part of the reason for the sale was because, at the time, Cryptic was developing a new superhero game in partnership with Microsoft and Marvel Studios that was to be called Marvel Universe Online. Later, Marvel and MS backed out, leaving Cryptic with a half-developed game. They decided to partner with HERO Games (for the IP) and eventually created Champions Online.
I understand this may be a little confusing, so there is no harm in your mistake. Just know that Cryptic Studios is competing with a game that they helped create, and co-owned for a period of time, but no longer help maintain. NCSoft is currently the sole owner of CoH.
In my opinion, the competition is helping to drive CoH to new levels of excellence, so I am glad Cryptic has provided more competition to a game they helped create in the first place.
Corrections made, thanks
I'm glad that we're getting some superhero MMO competition out there. Any of them starting now will have a long way to go to catch up to CoX as far as balance and content, so CoX isn't in danger any time soon, but their new ideas are pushing CoX to expand their game more to compete with them and keep it that way. I don't think we would be getting power customization when we are if it weren't for CO showing up, and Going Rogue probably would still be a ways off if the new games weren't coming up on them. Whether they fail or succeed, they are pushing CoX to expand and try harder. Everyone wins.
I hope the competition in the superhero game field will draw attention and make the market share of superhero games vs fantasy games and others grow.
This is not unheard of in fields where there is competition.
Jack had already moved out of the 'CoH dept' long before the IP buy-out, although, you can make the case that as chief creative designer for Cryptic he was an ex officio developer of every project at Cryptic, including CoH (in fact, he did help out with Issue 9 as did some other devs moved over to other projects to wrangle the massive Inventions issue).

They shouldn't have made World of Warcraft, Everquest II was unbeatable.
Personally I am glad that we're getting competition. I tried CO and I'm not going to say anything at all against it because I know a lot of people flame it. It wasn't a bad game (let's keep in mind it's till just a baby, CoX is 5 years old) however the game was just not my flavor. I think that competition will bring good things. I believe that the new customizable powers that are being brought to us while the servers are being updated at this very moment, is a result of that competition. In the future I feel that other companies might try to simulate what NCsoft® has done, since they are very successful.
