I just had a thought...

I was toying around with a build on mid's when I realized..why is it called Temp Invulnerability? I'm assuming the "Temp" is short for temporary, but I don't really see what's temporary about the power. The only real way to lose it is to run out of endurance or manually toggle the power off yourself, but the effect doesn't just eventually fade off as the name would suggest.

I dunno, random thought is random I guess...

I would guess that it was a click power in some old iteration of the power? Can't find any reference to such a change though.

I believe DarkGob is correct; the original version of the power was a click rather than a toggle, and they just never changed the name.

Ahh, that makes sense. I thought I was just having another stupid thought moment...

... that uninformative thread titles suck.

Anyway, yes, it used to actually be a temporary power. In these toggle-filled days, sometimes I wish there were more click-defenses, or situational-toggles. Oh well! Maybe in a new set.

But they open themselves up to so many answers - admittedly most sound rather snarky (such as "Really! Your first?") or otherwise smartalecky ("I used to have those, but they did nothing but get me in trouble.")

I gotta admit I was at least expecting something along the lines of "Quick, everybody take cover!".

Perhaps it's also named Temporary Invulnerability so that, when you've faceplanted, you can't complain to the Devs. "But I can't lose, I'm INVULNERABLE!"

"Temporarily invulnerable, sorry."

That would imply you have influential or dangerously impressive thoughts.

This. This is the whole reason. lol

I always thought it was using "temp" to portray... quality of, as opposed to duration.

It's slightly invulnerable... or... nearly invulnerable.

I don't know if that makes sense.

Not really. "Temp(orary)" is only related to quality indirectly, i.e. something temporary would probably of lesser quality than something more permanent. The word really does speak directly to duration.

Would Temp(oral) Invulnerability work for that?

edit: stupid typos

There I was between a rock and a hard place. Then I thought, "What am I doing on this side of the rock?"

Maybe it's to imply that you are just standing in for the really invulnerable guy while he's on vacation.

"I thought you said you were invulnerable?!"

"Nah; I'm just a temp."

"Did it hurt?"
"Hold on, I've got the fire extinguisher!"
"You had it, and it got away?"
"Thought, or bowel movement? Is there any difference, in your case?"
"I had a thought once. I named it George."

Not directed at anyone in this thread, just throwing them out there.

This is actually an interesting question to me.....common sense would say that originally this was a temporary power. I don't recall that.....although I started playing shortly after Beta, and my first Invulnerablity Tanker was made around I2.

My guess again, was the sometime around launch, this was a timed power that was changed before I1, but the name of the power was never changed. Now I'm kind of curious about the specifics.

Well toggles didn't use to always stay on until you clicked them off or ran out of endurance. You could get mezzed and lose the toggle, but as you pointed out that probably doesn't suggest it should be called Temporary either.

They probably can rename it to Nigh Invulnerable, but I doubt it'll see any name change as it's really semantics to come up with a reason to call it anything....other than what it is now.
