Does anyone have any advice for a first time player? Not just first-time for THIS game, but really ALL MMORPGs.

I plan on being a villian, so I can murder innocents. Just to relieve stress and all that.

First off. Welcome aboard.

There are just a few basic rules I give to new players.

1. There is no RIGHT way to play this game. There is no magic combo to make you more superior than anyone else. Try everything and you'll find the powers/AT that work best for you.

2. Read everything. Do the tutorial. Read all the explanations. Go back and read things again if you're not sure. It might take some time now but it will make things easier later.

3. Be polite. Don't be a pushy idiot and you'll find that the other players will be more willing to help. We're usually pretty good about answering questions.

4. Have fun. There's a lot to do in the game, not all of it will be your kind of thing. Try out everything first and then go to it. If you're not having fun, you're wasting your time.

Thats about the basics.

As a side note: maybe do something about the forum name? What you have currently will eventually draw some unwelcome attention from the Moderators. JUst a suggestion.

I've actually had 5 replies to two threads, and four of them suggested I change that name, so it actually might be in my best interest.

I wrote a long diatribe in my other thread about why I didn't want to change it, but it's obviously a bigger issue than I thought.

I wrote the email address provided in the other thread and requested a change, so hopefully it will be taken care of shortly.

Thanks for the information and advice, everyone!

I second the vote for ParagonWiki. I would also suggest not getting involved with the current trend of boss farms in Architect Entertainment (AE). It's tempting because it's a fast way to level, but ultimately you'll be shortchanging yourself, not seeing most of what the game has to offer.

Of course, when the next game update (issue 16, or i16 for short) goes live, the boss farms will end because they're changing the XP rewards for them. Powerleveling won't end, but that particular type will.

Anyway, welcome aboard, and don't be shy about posting other questions in this forum. It has an amazingly knowledgeable group of players that monitor it.

Here's my advice, gleaned from quite literally decades of networked gaming/MMOs/MUDs/God knows what else.

  • Be polite. People like that and remember it.
  • To the best of your ability, use proper grammar and punctuation. It's sadly less common than it ought to be, and you will stand out. Judging from your posts, this won't be an issue.
  • Assume that when someone gives you advice, they mean well and are not insulting you, your build, your playing skills, or your family. After almost five years in this game, I am still learning new tricks from fellow players.
  • It's a game, so have a good time and do your best to help others have a good time.
  • When someone decides to be a ********, don't respond in kind. Put them on ignore, report them if they are abusive, but don't give them the pleasure of goading you into a response.
  • This one is CoX specific: you don't need any specific team makeup for any of the game content. When someone says they need a tank or a kin or a healer, they are incorrect. Some of the best times in this game are found when you form up a Faathim TF with three scrappers, four tankers and one terrified blaster, and proceed to finish it in two hours.
  • This one is CoX specific: Don't do "boss farms" or "AE farms," at least not for your first characters. The game is big and filled with stories and stuff; enjoy it.
  • Nothing of value is said in zonewide chat channels. This one is occasionally untrue, but those times are few and far between. When you read something in broadcast that sounds completely idiotic, it doesn't need a response.

There's plenty more but I think this will get you rolling and help you have a good time.

Haha, almost 12 months and I still do this sometimes.

On topic, looks like lots of good advice here. I'll just add that you should join the global channel for whichever server you pick, assuming you're not on the trial anymore. They're a great way to find teams, or even just people to chat with while you solo.

If you scroll down to the bottom of the forum page, each server section should have a stickied thread with the main global channels listed.

All of this. Also, don't rush to 50 (the max level), because this game is all about the journey, not the end. Especially for new players.

You might also want to check out some of the guides in my signature, especially the Combat Guide, it will give you a jump start in the game.

There's very little gore in the game, and civilians can't be slaughtered just like that

Also, welcome to the forums and the game - and as others have already mentioned the need for a change of forum name, I won't need to mention it

Minor issue with the name, FT has to contact the devs/forum mods to get it changed...

That's true, but will be changing at least a little bit when the next paid expansion, Going Rogue comes out. (No announced timing on this; I expect it to go into beta in a month or two and be released some time in Dec-Feb.) The devs announced at San Diego Comicon that they want to add a challenging end game.

It won't be like the end game in WoW, I'm quite sure. I don't play WoW but from what I gather, the end game raids are so all-consuming that it's common to focus on just one character for extended lengths of time. This game encourages creating and enjoying lots of different characters and I'm positive that won't change.

I just wanted to chime in on this because COH is often summed up as being fun to do with lots of alts but lacking anything resembling end game play. It'll be nice to have more to do at the level cap when Going Rogue comes out.

Or in my case, one terrified Illusion/Kin controller. Gotta love when the team goes "Use your AOE hold!"

"... I have to run in for that."

"Use stealth!"

"THEY'RE GIANT EYEBALLS"

... anywho, welcome to the game, FT!

Wow! I'm definately going to have to save this thread and keep it as a reference in case I get a little confused while playing.

I confess some of your posts are Greek to me (tank, kin, healer, etc.), I'm sure I'll get all these terms eventually.

And as for the name, I've written an e-mail, but I'm assuming that will take a minute or two. I think it's more funny than anything, but I guess not so much...

Thanks again for all the help!

"Tank": Tanker. The guy you send in to keep things from killing you. That six-ton hunk of metal aiming a cannon at your nads.

"Kin": Any player (Corruptor, Controller, Defender) who selected the Kinetics powerset as one of their two abilities. Highly valued among the playerbase due to Speed Boost and Fulcrum Shift.

"Healer": That guy that keeps you from dying by using bright, flashy powers.

Just to touch on this. If you're thinking this is how things will go down, I'm sorry to disappoint you. Be ready to wrap your head around the fact that most of the villainy in this game revolves around 'no honor among thieves' and 'a little fish in a big pond getting bigger'

There are missions where you get to corrupt innocents or lead them to their doom, but you can't just head around town blasting civilians. This is about a society based on forwarding some ultimately evil goals, but most of that means following the commands of people who are much more powerful than you are.

Even in Mayhem Missions which take you to the Hero City to rob and pillage, your goals are more oriented to property destruction and theft than killing.

All that being said, there are some good player made story arcs that have the chance to beat up civilians. I made one myself. The Freaklympics has a mission devoted to overloading the Hospital system by wiping out a neighborhood as quickly as you can. Once you're advanced to about level 30 or so, I'd recommend getting a few friends and giving it a run. It will be even better once Issue 16 hits.

Yeah, it might start a fight, but I think this is worth emphasizing, especially because the OP is asking about MMOs in general. In a lot of other games, especially older ones, combat was designed around the idea of the "holy trinity": A tank to absorb damage and keep enemies away from teammates, a damage dealer to kill those enemies, and a healer to keep the other two in fighting shape. Even World of Warcraft uses this model to a certain extent, so a lot of people come to City of Heroes/Villains thinking that the "healer" is the best type of support class, and that they need one to accomplish anything.

That's not true, at least not here. In CoH/V, powers that buff teammates or weaken enemies are much, much more powerful than in most other MMOs. Even Empathy, the set a lot of people think of as the "healing" set, is based mostly on (very powerful) buffs to teammates that when used right make heals completely unneeded.

Another example would be a Force Field Defender. Force Fields doesn't have a heal, a resurrection power, or any of the other abilities people think a "healer" should have. Force Fields has defensive shields that make it harder for enemies to hit you and your team, and powers that knockdown/knockback enemies to keep them from attacking. That's it. A good forcefielder doesn't *need* a healing power, because his team doesn't get hit in the first place.

Since you're not joining us with a background in other MMOs, this may not seem like a big deal, but there are a lot of veterans of other games wandering around who still think support=heals, and on the other side, the Defender subforum will skin you alive and sacrifice you to their dark and terrible gods if you wander in and start talking about "Healers". Just remember, in CoH/V, healing isn't a bad thing, just a last resort.

I've added the new player tag to your post, as I have with several others. If you click on it, you'll see many posts that pose a similar question. Perhaps you can gain even more insight from some of these.

Wait.... are you allowed to use the tag feature for anything except snarky passive aggression?

And since you are new here, BTW hello and welcome to the game, you won't know who Sister Flame is. She is now an 8 year old (I guess) whose father has been posting about her adventures in the game. His thread about her is here if you are interested.

ParagonWiki can be a bit intimidating at first so you may want to start with the Player's Guide and look here for an index of often used terminology.
