Here we are, having the Closed Beta for Issue 16. You can find all kinds of threads speculating how things are going to turn out. Heck, you practically trip over them. But that's normal.

Earlier tonight, I was doing some searching for some old threads I had kept the URLs to in a text file, so that I could update them to work with the new forums. There were a couple that I couldn't find, because I didn't bother to note the title of the topic, or who had started it. One of them was an example IO build for a Fire/Fire Tanker that Beef_Cake posted shortly after I9 launched. I hit up his profile, and clicked the link to show me all of his posts.

That's when I stumbled across this gem:

Looking through this thread, it's interesting to see what the players were speculating would be in I4, waaaay back in 2004. Some of the things are only just now showing up (power customization). Others showed up in prior issues (mission creation, weapon customization). And still others have yet to make it in (weather, chest logos on capes).

For some people, like Beef_Cake, reading that thread will be a little trip down memory lane. For others, like myself, it provides an intersting insight into how development of the game has gone over the course of 5 years and 16 Issues.

What are stackable armors?


A game is not supposed to be some kind of... place where people enjoy themselves!

The original Dark, ice and stone (IIRC that was all) armours could only have 1 toggle active at a time

so either you had say sm/lethal resits or energy/neg enery

Invulnerability had two one toggle for resistance, one for defence and Unyielding, which rooted you in place and as such wasn't going to be on all the time, an Fiery Aura had and has two toggles and was and is one of the weaker sets when it comes to direct protection. Back then, the idea for a lot of protection sets was that players would have to pick and choose their protection or risk exposing themselves to serious danger.

I lay the fact that this was removed mostly at the feet of Scrappers, who had Super Reflexes which allowed the set's entire arsenal of defences to be on at the same time and Regeneration, which not only wasn't built to rely on protection toggles, but also allowed players to run Instant Healing all the time, achieving levels of protection Tankers would need stacking armours to match an exceed. That, and basic convenience, of course. On the other hand, those stacking armours are part of the reason there is such a gulf in survivability between ATs that have shields and ATs that don't.

It was a skills system that Statesman would never stop talking about which never really saw the light of day. It kind of became inventions, or at least that's the community's perception.

SSOCS = Super Secret Out of Combat System. The devs were trying to come up with alternate things to do in the game to advance your character, that didn't involve combat. It went through several revisions, and whenever the devs felt they were getting close, their tests of it made them decide it was NO FUN, scrap the system, and go back to the drawing board.

Eventually, it lead to the Invention System, but I wouldn't really consider Inventions to be a true out of combat system, since almost everything in it is reliant on drops (yes, you can get everything you need from other players, but they still need to drop for SOMEONE). So... IMO, we're still waiting for a true SSOCS.

That, and it is probably the most banal character in the lore. They need to stop using him as a mascot. Now there is a redname who goes by The Television. That is taste.

Heh, Pistol Scrappers.

Well, it looks like we'll get Pistols with Going Rogue, so if there happens to be a Pistol Ancillary for scrappers, I'll be satisfied. :P

Of course, we'll need a Pistol Manipulation for blasters too... and a Pistol Assault for Dominators... Pistol Control would be good, too... Pistol Armor for tankers... =o_O=

I didn't know about The Television. That is classy.

And I never liked the Statesman character (not even touching on the actual guy). Too...stereotypical. And a bit full of himself. And by a bit, I mean RI couldn't contain his ego.

Actually, it's not just him, it seems like all the old rednames are Banned. Vyvyanne, Tisiris, Old Lord Recluse...

I think Paragon Studios learned that giving someone a lore-related red name looks bad when they go.

Like with Lord Recluse: "Hey, here's Zeb Cook, Lord Recluse of CoV! Everyone ask him some questions and he'll answer them when he ... what's that? He won't be answering them because he is no longer at Cryptic? Okay... but here is our new Lord Recluse, Serdar Copur! With that kind of handle, you just know he's going to hang aroun... or go off to join John Romero's studio. And here comes our next red name. Guess what? They just get a title and a number."

I think they should go by:

GenericDeveloper_01
GenericDeveloper_02
etc

Or make them select NPC names that kinda match what they do:

Castle should be Dr. Brainstorm ("Powers in combinations you never dreamed of!")
Positron should be Nemesis! Because everything is a plot! (*smirks* Or Tyrant, depending on who you ask.)
BAB should be Malaise (he's an artist... sort of... who lives in his own little world...)
WarWitch should be... crap, who's the most prolific writer in the CoH-verse?
Hero 1 should be Doc Science (Mr. "I Know Everything in Existence")
pohsyb should be Rularuu. (We know he's there and he's important, but you never see him in-game for... some reason.)
TheDarkWatcher... can stay as he is.
Manticore can stay as he is too, coz his job is to flit in and out and look at what people are doing and comment on it.

Yeah, I agree. I never liked the Statesman signature hero, either. Waaaay too full of himself, waaay to stereotypical. Unlike the rest of the signatures, he doesn't really seem to have a distinct personality. It's like they tried to throw every popular super hero personality into one person. Bleh.

I found it interesting, and got in shortly before the lock, so I will re-post here, picking and choosing quotes from the first few pages:

Another Epic AT or two available to Everyone
Customizable Attack animations
Sonics, Arrows
More badges
Flashback system
specific costume enhancements that you could only get at certain levels, 20, 30, 40, 50 etc.....certain elements or even color effects

Not only would they allow you to make missions but would also store those missions so others could use them as well. The only thing you would not be able to choose is the enemies you would fight. Heh - yea, those early days were wierd. I played a /SR scrapper from launch, and my roommate a /Regen. His main, of course, always was and still is uber, and in the days of perma-Elude, so was mine - it felt really odd in those days to always still be standing, even after any tanks we might be teamed with had face-planted.

I'm glad things got changed, so that Tanks are actually tanks!

Heh - guess that depends on your definition of a thread necro.

Personally, I don't think actually posting something of substance in a thread that's actually pretty recent constitutes a thread necro. I suppose "pretty recent" is subjective, but, oh well - opinions differ.

Now, if I'd pulled up a thread that hadn't been active for a year, and posted something like, "wootsauce," yea, that'd be a necro, and I'd fully deserve the attention of the necro police.
