Looking for a fun blaster

Ok, so I have never actually played a blaster past 16 or so and am looking for advice on what is fun and relatively pain-free to play. I want to be able to solo but will mostly play on teams.

What have been y'alls most fun blaster combos?

Pain free....blaster...

I am finding my Sonic/Energy a lot of fun (her name is Pam Demonium, what a coincidence, eh?). Sonic gets an AoE Sleep relatively quickly, which aids soloing.

Fire/Ice is also good. Lay down an Ice Patch, back up to let them chase you, add Rain of Fire - much hilarity ensues.

Actually all my blasters are fun, just some need a bit more strategery than others.

I'd pick Ice/something (probably ice/energy or ice/elec, for the big melee hitters) to answer the OP's question.

Then I'd go on for a while about my high-speed, nervewracking, l33t playstyle where I blow everything up real good on my fire/elec and they barely shoot back.

Then the OP would roll their eyes, and we'd both leave feeling superior to the other.

... oh sh**, I think I just had a moment of self-awareness.

Claws/WP is pretty pain-free play.

Sonic and Ice have great controls. Combine with Nrg, Elec, or Mental.

Why Blasters? Empathy Sucks.
So, you want to be Mental?

Pain Free, Ice/Elec or Sonic/EM (this might hurt your ears tho). Full on onslaught of pain and glory? Fire/MM.

It depends on what you define as fun.

I actually gravitate to the underpowered combinations the best. I'm currently enjoying a lowbie AR/Ment blaster. Having two nice cone attacks by level 10 is pretty nice.

As to something pain free.

Ice/Ice - very nice solo toon with lots of utility and controls. It plays a lot like a controller but with damage. Stacking holds make bosses a non issue.

Sonic/Energy - Good damage, a cone sleep, a ranged stun and knockback (if you want it) plus all the melee and utilty of energy manipulation.

Sonic/Devices - A little less damage than sonic/energy but with the safety and utility of devices. Stacking stuns make bosses a non issue.

Archery/Mental - Good AoE, a lot of utility and impressive damage. Probably the nicest mini nuke in the game (fast recharge, no crash).

Electric/Electric - Better than what you'd think. Can stack holds and drain end and can replenish endurance with power sink. Lends itself better IMO to a melee blaster (blapper style) but can be made into a good range character too.

I've found my Sonic/Elec to be amazingly fun.

If you like the idea of hitting them from range to damage and lower their res then run up
and knock them out its the sets for you.

The second two sentences seem contradictory to the first one.

Just because you have two complimentary attacks doesn't necessarily mean that they are powerful. There are lots of primaries with cones and some of them with aim.

I do like buckshot (from AR) and psy scream (from Mental) because they have some built in mitigation (knockdown, -recharge) in both. I can (as you can) find primaries that do more damage.

For mainly solo play Sonic would be the obvious choice. In teams though, Blaster Sonic is lacking as it has a negligible amount of Area of Effect damage. Blasters are there to bring the pain, not play a defenderish force multiplier role.

I would recommend Fire, Archery or Assault Rifle. Fire solos quite well despite lacking any sort of mitigating power. Killing really fast is mitigation in itself I guess. Archery and Assault Rifle has access to and generally need their stuns solo. Hover-blasting will decrease your own pain by a large margin so make sure to take the power into consideration. End game, these three powerset are the only ones pushing the envelope when it comes to damage compared to your typically more overpowered non-blaster teammembers.

For solo play an ice or sonic blaster would probably be the best since those sets offer some decent mitigation powers. Ice being slightly better on teams then sonic since it has a bit more aoe. (And ice also has the coolest nuke.) My ice/fire blaster is actually the first blaster I managed to get past the big nuke level and was also my first blaster to reach lvl 50. On teams nothing is more fun then to use buildup, aim, ice storm, blizzard on a big spawn. Then I pop a small blue, rush in for consume to refill my end and finish the mobs of with a fire sword circle.

For teaming the blaster sets with lots of aoe would probably be better, so fire, archery or assault rifle? Currently I'm leveling up a fire/mental blaster and it's truely devestating on teams. Using three ranged aoe's (two cones, one targeted aoe), in combination with either buldup or aim, and all the minions will already be gone with lt's severely beaten if not defeated as well. And post 38 you can use psy shockwave for some additional pbaoe damage. And those three aoe's are already all available at lvl 10. Not sure about archery since I haven't played that, but it may reach similar levels of mass destruction? It just might have to wait a bit longer untill rain of arrows is available at lvl 32?

Sheline: lvl 50 ma/sr scrapper
Thor's Kitten: lvl 50 ela/mace tanker
Hellfrost: lvl 50 ice/rad corruptor
And many more. What can I say? I'm an alt-o-holic.

It is true that AR/Men can be beaten on the damage front. But its not Elec/Dev, it is not one of the underpowered combos. This time, a different looking beast has excited you.

fire/elec is the most fun character that I've soloed (~18-50)

I'll go against the flow and vote for Elec^3. It's easily one of my favourite toons, especially when I get to play the "tanksapper" role.

And btw, don't let any FoTM lover tell you that Elec^3 underperforms or doesn't deal enough damage both ST and AoE. It's pure bull****.

Seconded. I've taken one of these to 50 (properly, not in AE) and he was a blast to play. Able to dish out a great deal of damage as well as able to handle himself if a couple of baddies broke off and came in for some hand to hand.

Personally, I have mostly soloed my AR/NRG blaster all the way to level 50. Especially the later levels were a lot of fun since you do have some control in the form of kb and stun but rarely need it blasting the heck out of enemy spawns from somewhere close to sniping range.

If it has
eyes, you can blind it, if it has blood, you can make it bleed, if it has a mouth, you can make it scream.

I've never had a lot of luck with Blasters, I solo most of the time and I have this problem with staying out of melee range.

I rolled an Ice/Ice blaster a few days ago to give them another shot and for a change of pace from my mains. I'm having an absolute ball with him. Learning to use Hover has helped a bunch and the -slow -recharge from Ice has been a big boon too.

He's up to level 22 now almost all of that has been solo, and he's dealt with a number of orange EBs handily. So my vote would be for Ice/Ice.

There are a number of possible interpretations of this.

If you mean "You are trying to stay out of melee range, and failing", hover is a solution.

If you mean "You keep getting lured into melee range so you can hit them with unbelievably fast, crunchy attacks like Havoc Punch and Bonesmasher"... there's a support group meeting at the bar next to the hospital. First drink's on me.

I agree. Mine is currently my favorite character to play. It's fun solo and on teams. The "tanksapper" is unlike anything else I've played. With 3 single target holds and the sapping capabilities, it's almost like a controller with blaster damage. Plus, sapping GMs makes me giggle.

I'll agree with elec/elec too. Mine is in the 30s now. I played him more as a blapper from the beginning with hard hitting melee attacks. He's great solo. Teams can be a little more tricky and sometimes I have to lay off the AOEs a bit if they don't have someone to hold aggro well. Still, it's a blast to play.

ice/ice is a great set. A bit end heavy to start with, but easy to solo with and can normally hold it's own in groups. You might even want a secondary build with rains for team work (or vice versa).

*/eng can work well too. Play it like a blapper too. My friend's char is elec/eng and seems to work well with power boost. I like power thrust in melee. great skill. I think ice/elec would work better due to the stacking holds rather then stuns though.

I am having a lot of fun with my fire/ice blaster, the guy is a beast with damage and the /ice adds just enough mitigation to solo (Chillblain, Ice Patch and Shiver and great)

I loved my ice/ice from the word go. She's over four years old, and not a week goes by that I don't spend some quality time playing her.

well as far as "fun" is concerned..I had tons of fun with Assault Rifle..It can be a sup-par set without a lil experience, but i loved lvl'ing my AR/EM.

I remember Buckshot being terrible.., but that was a long time ago..

I guess device's is ok in the fun department too.

Elec/elec. It's my main, has been my favorite for 3 years now and will likely remain so. Good for solo & teams and a whole lot of fun to boot.
