Reasons NOT To Try Those Other Games
Reason why I will not play any of the other games?
They offer me nothing that CoH/CoV does not already offer, and it does so in a supirior way than any other game I know.
But that is just me.
Know what really bugs me about most I've tried?
Being like everyone else.Yes, you come up with this wonderful character, and within five levels you're in the same "I'm not quite a nooblet any more" armor with the same "hey, this is almost sharp enough to cut warm butter" sword or what have you. Sure, you might have a little color difference here and there, but overall, there's no point to customizing your look - as within five levels, if you don't dump all your stuff for new, you might as well be wearing cottage cheese for armor and throwing loosely wadded paper at the enemy. |
Really, CoH was the first MMO that gave you the satisfaction of saying "this is my toon, this is my in-game avatar and mine alone". It made you feel unique in a game with a hundred thousand players and at least ten times as many toons. Compare that to most other MMOs, wherein you just need, oh I don't know, three ploayers for two to look alike already.
Have any of these other games introduced the capacity to inflict misery, pain and destruction upon Rhode Island?
I thought not. ^_^ |
Though this thread makes me wanna try one of those other games now. I love how my mind works.
(I'm insane)

Thanks to this thread, I finally used that Guild Wars free trial and I'm trying to figure out what the hell is going on.
On the other hand, my warrior can disco dance. Awesome.
If I can't make videos in those other games, I'm not going anywhere.

Nothing beats travel powers, the costume creator, and fast action. Just wait until we get power customization and... *gasp* pink and aqua and lime green and cherry red and neon blue and orange splashing all over the screen in a rainbow of excitement. I can hardly wait!
Neither of these games have Blue Steel. |

This is why CoH is bad for you. It spoils you with sweet, sugary goodness like its character creator so that the character creators in other MMOs seem like prison meals, to the point you don't even want to start the game proper because you know, you know, that you will meet your perfect clones, of which there are numerous, at least twelve times an hour.

Add to that:
- fast-paced action
- tons of powers available on one toon
- lots of character powers build options (more def, more recharge, mix of powers)
- even using Sprint is faster than the speed you move in most other MMORPGs
- packs of dozens of mobs
My only regret:
Exploration benefits are very limited and level 10+ outdoor hunting has been killed by balance fixes (sadly making hazard zones dead zones).
I'm not playing them for a couple reasons:
1) From what I've seen one looks like garbage.
2) The other will purportedly feature open world PvP, which I am not interested in.
3) I have no desire for my game performance to be based on my ability to acquire the Uber Rare Morningstar of Ultra-Pwnage and the Ridiculously Colored Armor of Unbeatability (both of which will have to be replaced within 5-10 levels anyway)
4) I'm broke and can't affored another subscription fee, and the odds of my quitting CoH to pay for another game are about the same as the odds of being hit by a bus....while on a cruise ship.

Yes. I can get lost on a straight-line map.
Try them just to make you appreciate what we have here even more!

Playing that Diablo clone has made me realise that even though the loot, crafting and equipment systems in this game make absolutely no sense at all, but they're so much better.

What was really fun, though, was how unfair the game could become at times. For instance, a friend of mine had a screenshot of a unique skeleton, who was immune to physical damage, immune to cold damage, resistant to fire and ice damage, and strong against poison damage. What the [foul language] am I suppose to use to fight this [REALLY self-censored] thing with? Wishful thinking? And on top of that, the game was ugly. Uglier than the original Diablo, in fact.
I bought City of Heroes because it was advertised as a game without a reliance on items and where you didn't have to take the same skills over and over and over again, and could instead take NEW skills. Such revolutionary ideas that they have gone right over the heads of developers before and since.

There are so many good games with great ideas that get ignored or forgotten. The entirely of X-COM for one.
Oh, and another annoying thing I noticed about Guild Wars: SO SLOOOOOOW
That and no real tutorial and the trial account doesn't even have the equivalent of Local chat. I had no way to communicate with other players beyond emotes. And interpretive dance is not my strong suit.
I will try other games if I can do so at low cost, I not a fan of paying 59.99 and another month fee to try a game!
The Resistance has boobs too, and better hair!

Well, Guild Wars is uninstalled, back to checking Evony in between sessions. Yeah sue me, the game has a dodgy charm. And I think my alliance just split.

"But in our enthusiasm, we could not resist a radical overhaul of the system, in which all of its major weaknesses have been exposed, analyzed, and replaced with new weaknesses."

I have to agree; the sumptuary laws in most MMOs are the most ironbound straitjackets you've ever seen. You can get all kinds of character customization -- face shape, eye color, hair style, hair color, lip color, tattoos, distinguishing marks, body sliders, whatever -- and somewhere, deep underground, are the factories churning out millions of identical pieces of gear; every set of "Upper Body Chain Armor of the [insert descriptive phrase here] is identical to every other one, with all of your choices that make your character an individual disappearing under mass-produced armor and equipment. And you'll be each and every piece as soon as you get a replacement that has a better bonus.

Agreed....I can't touch a fantasy MMO anymore (well not totally true, I have Runes of Magic installed and played it back when it was in beta...but that was because it was free and 'kind of' fun and I had no job...so free was good)...
I mean seriously what CoH did when it first launched...all that character customization! And you get to keep it/don't need to wear armor that makes you look the same?!
I also love(d) the UI for this game...best UI ever (until a newer one comes out :P)...I played WoW about a month or so after CoH came out (got into the WoW beta) and was like, "Uh....what is this? Where do I go to talk to x person in this city/town (sorry not the "explorer" type...don't want to "waste" 30 minutes finding one NPC in a huge city)? You mean I can't customize the UI without downloading scripts/3rd party programs? "

And let's not forget that until you get to max level and spend hours upon hours every night grinding the same content over and over again until you can finally collect all the pieces of the Uber Awesome Make All The Noobs Wish They Were As Cool As You Armor of Pwnage +Infinity, none of this mass-produced armor will actually match.

Y'know what's so great about this game's UI? I can change it. I can open as many power trays as I want, move around all the windows, and I've only just gotten the hang of making a more efficient UI. Having only seven powers available at once was totally alien to me.
and finally...
WE'RE NOT WORTHY!
But seriously folks...
I have to admit, to my undying shame, that it took me over 10 months (NCsoft master account created in August 2004, City of Heroes account created in May 2005) before I took the plunge and started playing CoH.
Which means I'll probably give "those OTHER hero games" a try as soon as, let's see, April 2010... if they're still around by then...
