Which Mission is in your Room 101?

In Orwell's 1984 the dreaded Room 101 contained your worst nightmare, whatever that happened to be. So which mission would be in your Room 101?

Up until today I'd have said "Defeat the Sea Witch" from Lorenzo Ansaldo in Sharkhead. The combination of knockback, end drain from her lightning attacks and the risk of being suddenly outnumbered 15 to 1 by pet summoning reinforcements has made that mission an ordeal for both the villains I've done it with.

Now I've got a new contender - "Defeat Ice Mistral" from Arbiter Lerry in Nerva.

Possibly it's just the character I'm on. A SS/Inv Brute who habitually runs through entire missions without pausing for breath - not much chance of that this time when every single enemy is a Mu with end draining attacks that leave me gasping for breath at the end of every second spawn and running half the mission with no toggles on. Well, not every enemy - the rest are Fortunatas, with psychic attacks - you know, the type that /Inv has ZERO defence against.

After much pain I finally reach Ice Mistral herself. I'm feeling confident. After all in the previous arc I beat Indigo - easy. How hard can she be?

After two defeats I'm seeing a pattern develop. I get off one run of attacks, then her ice powers reduce my recharge rate to nearly nothing and I stand there while she blasts me with ice attacks I have surprisingly little resistance to. Then I run away, and fall off the edge of the walkway (it's in the BIG Arachnos room) so by the time I get back up to her she's healed the little damage I did. Since I used all my insps in the first attack I then die.

I daresay it's nothing a full tray of purples and oranges can't fix, but boy... just when you think you're invincible, along comes someone to prove otherwise.

So what's your nightmare mission?

Okay... MY Room 101 missions in no particular order...

* The Ask Girl To High School Prom Mission: Luckily I only had to do this once as I wasn't running any alts at the time this was available... The worst thing about this mission is that no matter what your difficulty was set at every girl was at LEAST an Elite Boss and the cheer leaders made most Arch-Villains look like pansies.

* The Brain Aneurism Survival Mission: I had to do this one about 6 years ago. Actually, I can't say it was especially difficult... all I had to do was keep breathing while the doctors and nurses did all the work... The only tricky part was I was on a Morphine Debuff the whole time... or was it a Buff? Hard to tell really.

A Quick unrelated/related note: My sense of humor operates even while my brain is hemorrhaging apparently... the aneurism occurred at the... er... "end point" of my then girlfriend and I "reaquainting" ourselves on a Sunday morning.. when it hit (either one.. your choice) I went into a grand mal seizure... when the ambulance tech asked me what happened I explained and then quipped "You might say I came and went all at the same time."

* The Home PvP Zone: My daughter is 14 years old and is now trying to assert her independence from my ex-wife. Lucky for me I'm just a spectator for this one seeing as how I don't live with them; although neither one appreciates when I sit there eating popcorn and screaming "Go for the chair! The CHAIR!!"

* The Explaining the Birds and Bees Mission: This one is deadly. Not so much because of the potential embarassment... more because they keep correcting me.

* The Marital Respec Mission: Think of divorce as a respec... You have to undergo several missions including 1) Breaking the News; which is hardly fair since you're starting out the first mission in an AV battle. 2) Inevitable Death Throes; denial, marriage counselling, turning all your mutual friends against each other erupting in bar fights... actually that last one is pretty darned funny if you time it right. 3) The Legal Mumbo Jumbo; you both become masterminds during this mission regardless of your original AT.. only instead of getting thugs you get lawyers. Finally, however, you are free and clear and can respec into another relationship... the only thing is .. no matter how much influence you had.. no matter what enhancements, inspirations, tickets or whatever you possessed... you only get to keep half.

My mind wanders so often you've probably seen its picture on milk cartons. - Me... the first person version of the third person Steelclaw

That "Defeat the Sea Witch" one is really close. It's either not bad (at times a cakewalk) or an incredible ordeal, and it seems really random which.

However, I'm going with anything from Efficiency Expert...Pither, is his name? Why do I always get the enormous multi-level multi-elevator map the very first bloody mission? I've pathetically failed that guy twice now, it just made me frustrated as all hell.

You win. I'm not sure what you win. You just win.

The entire story arc and extra missions givin by:

I hate that whole arc/missions/contact. Bleck!

I remember that one...

It wasn't really terrible for me, but it was a pain in the neck.

My Room 101 would have to be the Alternate Dimension Clockwork missions. Both the King and Babbage in those missions have MASSIVE psychic damage that shows that even tankers can be squishy. I hate feeling squishy as a tanker... It's why I was playing a tanker at the time! I didn't want to feel squishy!

Look at that. A full-grown woman pulling off pigtails. Her crazy is off the charts.

- Lorenz Ansaldo's mission against the Sea Witch.
- Dr Forrester's mission against Silver Mantis.
- Tina Macintyre's mission against the Psychic Clockwork King.
- Maria Jenkin's mission against Marauder.
- The final mission in any CoV patron arc.

(All these things have something in common besides an AV/Hero. Can you guess?)

Gaussian's mission where you have to prevent the Sword assassinating Lady Grey. An escort, with much tougher than usual enemies, full of constant ambushes and about four or five forced boss spawns. I like fighting the Sword, but this mission is a utter pain.

"The Hamidon is a what what of what?" - Brian the mission guy.

Anything on the Troll Tunnel Map. Getting caught between three mobs in an eight man group is painful to say the least. Also, the new Midnight Contact's arcs. The designer sure does loooooove ambushes. For those who love getting ground between two groups of enemies.

Tina Macintyre has given me a few timed outdoor kill-alls. Those and the timed outdoor hostage hunts in city maps... Ugh.

All depends, if you're smashing/lethals based Marauder can be the second toughest Praetorian, if your Psi damage orientated he can be very easy, the reverse is true of Mother Mayhem, Malaise and Black Swan.

For me it was fighting against Dominatrix with my invuln/SS tanker, she actually has innate higher resistance to S/L than any of the other AVs, she doesn't hit hard but boy does she take a long while to wittle down...it's like Reichsman-lite.

They can't be dropped, right?

On-topic, the "Save 26 magicians" mission in Orenbega is a huge pain. I hate it so much.

Bingo!

Those particular missions can make me avoid those contacts altogether. That's how annoying they are to me. Yes, I've stopped taking patrons for my villains.

I hit control-f on this page. I didn't get any hits on the word "mole" or "machine". I'm astonished. Mole machines, or anything like mole machines, are my worst nightmare. Auto-fire, Masterminds and dropping missions are the only ways I'd ever be able to do them. The last mission on the Khan TF was similar. Fighting him was like fighting a mole machine. It was easy and terribly boring. Please don't make me ever do that again. They embody everything I hate. There's no action. It's just tedium. I feel like I should get one of those dipping birds.

Mole machines may make me cry and want to gauge my eyes out due to boredom but there are some enemies who frighten me. Longbow Nullifiers and Zenflower scare me. They are the only things in this game that I truly fear to fight against. I've done hundreds of wild and crazy things. I've tanked all 8 of the Freedom Phalanx at the same time on an /Electric Brute, I've done wild and crazy task forces on the highest difficulty with enemies buffed, I've solo'd whatever. Only Nullifiers and Zenflower scare me. Sonic Grenades are brutal. I run around randomly trying to stay out of them when they are lobbed in my direction. Zenflower I just don't understand. I just get mauled when I see her. Other AVs and Heroes who do psychic damage are no problem. She's just a beast.

This. By all that's holy- this. No mission should ever involve going in, setting an attack on auto, then having to find something to do for 15 minutes as the computer whittles away at a big sack of HP. It's like the devs had a quota for how long they needed the patron arcs to be, and Black Scorpion was running short, so they stacked one mission with a time waster. Even worse is the fact that Black Scorpion tends to fit most of my characters best out of the patrons, so it's either suck it up or wedge some other patron into their story.

For extra credit, I'll say any mission that spawns several ambushes on you at the same time. I was running the Sister Airlia arc last night on my brute and ran across that mission where you have to rescue Ghost Widow. We get her free, and suddenly we're swarmed by what seemed to be three ambushes at once- one had a Longbow boss in it, and one had a Ballista in it. Now, we ran it twice- and we were able to kill them the second time, when we were all prepared for it, but the first time was just a cluster[censored].

My story arcs: #2370- Noah Reborn, #18672- The Clockwork War, #31490- Easy Money

Sartre once said, "Hell is other people." What does that make an MMO?

Omg, Does the 20 hostages, malta, oranbega mission really exist???
...I would log off right then and there if i got that mission.

Now that being said, My least favorite mission so far has been... really any oranbega mission set, I love the appearance of the map. I despise its play.

On top of that my least favorite villain group in the game resides in those missions; yeah, I dont care if im magic origin, id rather blow my Inf buying enhancements.

After trying to lead a team through it, the final mission of the ITF. I know that Task Force is considered a twenty-minute-long joke on the forums, but after trying to defeat Romulus with every strategy I've ever seen work and failing miserably at all of them, that one takes the cake. It doesn't help that this was with one of the few characters I have that actually would use the Roman armor for something. I really, really don't want to wait until 50 to do this successfully, but it looks like that's what's happening. Again.

Runners up include trying to solo anything featuring Infernal (either version) and the "rescue 21 magicians in Oranbega," because it literally makes me physically ill after about the sixth time through the map looking for hidden magicians numbers 16 through 21.

I soloed Praetorian Infernal on my 50, my biggest problem was the summoning portal. Infernal himself was rather easy, accept for the two times he took out the axe.

Winner: Mission 2 (or sometimes 3) of the Positron TF: rescue the FEMA workers. Gigantic office map full of Spectral Daemon Lords; two hostages to escort to the door past multiple ambushes. If it weren't for that one Bob-awful mission, people wouldn't hate the Positron TF nearly so much.

First Runner-Up: Lawrence Ansaldo's level 20 mission to go street sweep for hazard-zone-sized spawns of level 26-29 Council in The Pit.

Doc Mechano, remember that time we tried to fight... Madame of Mystery, was it? You were on your Dark/Regen. Slowly trying to whittle her down over the space of 10-15 minutes? That was painful!

A lot of good choices here. As someone who has also been two-shotted by the Psychic Clockwork King, taken completely by surprise by the ambush from hell in the Sister Airlia mission and ran out of time while searching for the last mage in Oranebega I definately agree with those. Them and the Vanguard Sword mission, which was what finally pushed me to do a respec on Nightshade and take Stamina.

As for Ice Mistral...
