Of course, according to the announcement we have until at least 3.00 this afternoon before it all goes off.

It seems he is still somewhat wise ; Bull Throttle: Shadowe was unwise in this instance...; Rock_Powerfist: in this instance Shadowe is wise.; Techbot_Alpha: Shadowe is very wise *nods*; Zortel: *Quotable line about Shadowe being wise goes here.*

Indeed. To "copy" all the mails they must be typing them out by hand again
Still, I'm off to be wed from today (or to run around like a headless chicken trying to organise everything) so good timing as far as I'm concerned.
So Avatea does the last person to post a mail in the old boards win a prize?

Or [*] Effective merging of 2 reasonably large databases with re-assignment/re-mapping of key data (I'd guess at least user, post and PM IDs)[*] multiple backups for that little bit of extra defence against Mr [censored]-up[*] Testing/Verification[*] a little contingency time built in
Not exactly a business-critical change either - so no need to have people working 24hrs a day on it...
I wouldn't say 3 days was a particularly long time for it.
Look at it this way: Would 1 day be reasonable if it was just migrating EU boards to new software? If so then imagine that they've got 1 day for EU, 1 day for US and 1 day to sort out conflicts/clashes and test/check the merge.
Yeah it won't be quite split like that - but just showing that 3 days isn't unreasonable.

Pffft, you and your "facts" JD. This is the internet. Everyone knows that anything one doesn't know how to do is therefore really easy and takes seconds to do (although upgrading web applications is one of the few things I do know how to do).
I assume they also have to change database layouts as well as just merging, I can't imagine the two BB apps use the same db schema.
Whenever we have to do something along these lines at work, we take copies of all the DB's and run several tests, fine tuning the scripts on the copies until we KNOW it's working right. Then when it's time to do it live, the whole process is done in under an hour (and I assure you, our client's live databases are waaaaaaaaay bigger than these forum ones... )

But those who have an appreciation of what the work will probably entail already know this and hoi polloi would see it as technical gobbledegook - so nothing was gained by pointing this out.
Although I did actually allude to this sort of change in the phrase 'effective merging' rather than just straight 'merging'.
Done a fair bit of web work but last year I performed an 'effective merge' of 2 large financial reporting systems for a private health company. The board migration should be a smaller (and less business critical) task - but I don't really envy them.

Aye, but probably so are the dbservers they're served on
And the forums are mainly text based so you've to regenerate full text indexes on everything which can take a while, especially on a slower machine running MySQL.

I gained a +1 to my soon-to-be-deceased postcount. Plus it passes the time on my last day before hols since I'm not allowed to do any actual work in case I break something.

Oh yes... We run on Multi-terabyte DB's running on AS/400 mainframes. But the principle is still the same... You run multiple tests on backups until you KNOW the scripts will work, and it should all be plain sailing when you finally do it live. That they're taking 3 days over it just kinda shows they've not done many/any dry runs.

But...
If you can't do any work today (in case you break something before your hols) did you manage to not do any work yesterday (in case you broke something before today when you can't do any work (in case you break something before your hols))?
And if that's the case:
Did you manage to not do any work on Friday in case..?

For the database, both UBB and VBB have great migration tools to transfer the whole database and make it compatible with the new one.
But 3 days.. thats friday then. But same day Aion beta starts again! And today Fat princess is available on PSN, i got 2 TF's on the US, i can survive 3 days.. for now.

Friday I had to do work to fix something I broke on Thursday, unfortunately. My plan was to do little, but I didn't get away with it.
In future I'll know not to do anything the day before the day before the day before my hols either. Lesson learned

And yet, that is no guarantee for success.. I once upon a time was involved in a multi upgrade of several DB's that also exceeded the sanity borders in size. Dry runs were done, backups were abused time and again until they happily accepted their flogging and all would take little more than three hours.
And then we went on to live. And live was less willing. Live was stubborn, causing the entire process to take close to 72 hours eventually. We had no fun I can tell you. Oh and those 72 hours WERE end to end, no 8 hours on and then 16 off, we had a weekend and one holiday straight after to sort it. We used it all...
Dry runs that are flawless are no guarantee unfortunately...
You could say we did have a visitor back then.. Mr. Sod..
you guy's do know that, the more posts we make here, THE LONGER IT'S GONNA TAKE.

Hee hee, never thought of that.
(There's another couple of milliseconds added)
To be honest, if we at this point decide to add only oneliners, we all put together will not ever reach GG's total amount of posts. Something tells me we won't make that much of an impact..

According to VBulletin there is an automated conversion tool, but I think the delay will be the converted data merger and user name adjustments...
Also coming soon VBulletin V4 (I assume the forums will go down for that upgrade too.)
