Also, are we there yet?

Nearly
Unless Avatea comes on and says there's been a technical problem, and they'll put off the merge to next week
[/ QUOTE ]
Lol, for the past hour or so there have been many irrelevant posts in lots of different threads (like a goodbye, wreck the house party), I think it's in any mod's best interest to get on with the merge as soon as possible.
[/ QUOTE ]
Yeah - we're being silly today becuase it's the last day - if they put it off, everything will go rather flat

But then, I'm always fascinated to hear any english speaking person try and pronounce Scheveningen
[/ QUOTE ]
Oh, that one's easy.

But that was a Dutch guy saying. Now it's your turn

Alas, I must decline.. I had tonsillitis 2 weeks ago (followed by a week of swine flu) and haven't fully recovered.

Yeah, wish I had mastered reading and writing dutch. Can speak it OK. Admitidly my vocab has slipped in the 10 years since I learnt it but my accent is still OK. Really must try and get back into it.
Oh, and I found 's-Hertogenbosch harder to get my tongue around.

Actually my scottish friend once told me that closest to it comes a little sentence in english of which I'm sure the last word will get censored as it's not a friendly word towards black people. And no, I do not discriminate, it makes for a close to real version of 'Scheveningen':
Shave a <you fill it in..> and then at rather high speed.
Friend of mine actually HEARD that when someone said it to him for the first time and he just asked '[censored]? are you out of your mind?'
Seriously: I think they've already started, just not bothered to take down the old forum!

True, Scheveningen is part of The Hague, but don't tell the residents that..
Both Den Bosch and Den Haag have similar backgrounds in origin, but we got lazy and these newer names, well, they're less hard on foreigners
Now, about the G-sound (SOUND), I never quite understood how a nation of Germans with horrific words like Schmetterling (butterfly) have trouble making that sound..

Ok thats true. Some of the high dutch idio.. people really speak english like they only did some english for dummies.
I've been in UK for 3 months, the people over there really were amazed about my english and how i speak, often even better and more understandable then the citizens.
And them ladies in the pub, they liked the accent
But i believe irish people can pronounce the G, from that uberlong townname ending at gogogoch or such.

The first thing i learned my ex gf, was the onion: ui. So she could at least pronounce it.
So the whole day long she was going: uiwwwww uiwwwwww uiwwww.
Anyway, this is a great one:

At a certain point he says : godverdomme (at the circle of old ladies), then u know how to say g or ch.
And ofcourse.. ZAKJE!
The most cool thing about dutch, basicly nobody in the world can understand it (apart from old colonies of the netherlands). Even germans hardly can understand us, while we can pretty much understand them (well, those who did a bit of german).
And that, by far, is the best thing about dutch, you can scold someone while smiling at him, he still thinks you're giving him compliments
