Migration to new Message Boards - Part two
Out of interest, judging by above conversation, does this also mean that everyone previously banned from the forums is now given an amnesty or just one exception?

As for your handles, we will be giving you more information on name conflicts and what to do to change yours after we have made sure that everything is functioning properly on the new vBulletin Message Boards. We appreciate that this is a serious concern, but rest assured we are aware of the situation and will endeavor to minimize any impact this will have.
[/ QUOTE ]
This does give me cause for concern. As we have been told that we can't change ours after we've been merged, the above would seem to imply that we would need to if there's a conflict.
[/ QUOTE ]
Maybe we can't change our names, but board admin can.
Guessing that in the case of conflicts they'll give a temporary name (genericposterxxxx) and you'll have to PM the admin/mods with your preferred name to change to. Admin then changes the name. But obviously they won't want to be doing changes on a regular basis so, other than initial name conflicts being dealt with manually, there'll be no name changing facility.

Exactly what I was thinking when I read that part. In fact when it said:

I almost.. almost thought that regardless of reg date etc.. it would be the EU people who will be the ones required to change. Hopefully thats just a generic message that got posted on both EU and US boards.

Good. Another good thing is that with the merge, I won't need to not bother searching the US forums for answers on stuff.
One other question though...
72 hours!? Who the hell is doing the upgrade? A snail?

I know. Obviously corraling the Forum Hampsters and training them to all work in the new Forum Hampster wheel is tougher than one would think.
Drat, I've just realised as well that the new forums probably won't work well with my browsers "switch off all images and stylesheets" mode either. I like browsing in black and white

Any way of finding out if your handle's used US side apart from searching for posts by that handle? "Archy" was used way back when I had a US account so I had to use another handle then. US-"Archy" has never posted anything...
I'd really be annoyed if I had to change my handle because of some US guy who never posts...
[i]EDIT: Do forum handles even ever get reset as normal char names would?

Maybe they'll do something like the avatar name wipe, where inactive names are freeded up?
Like even if someone on the American boards had registered with the name "Archy", but had never posted, the name would be freed up, and if they did decide to start posting, they'd be given the chance to pick a new name.

Maybe, but I'm guessing they would just tend to look at the registration date. I don't know if "US Archy" reg'd before me or not but I've never seen any posts from him.
Would be nice to get an official word on this...

does this mean that i can ask for a different forum handle?
if so, i think it's best to change my name to youganite, i am not so loved as sorudo in america.
You can change your name already to youganite now. You can't change it once we are switched over.

Actaully, looking at it again, it only says the boards will be down for 2 hours, but it'll take 72 hours to get everything working...

No, it says the boards will be taken down at one point during a two hour period, (3-5PM) and it'll take 72 hours from when they go down to come back.

Still no clarification on what we're supposed to do if we have both EU and US names the same?
I'd really like to know before I go off on hols for 3 weeks.

Been checking the US boards and as far as I can see no answer there either. Would be hellanice to get a definate answer on this!

If I were you, I'd assume that no answer is forthcoming, backup what you can, if you have a US account name, change it to something else, and then expect a fight with customer services when you get back from holiday.

Wouldn't surprise me if they didn't know exactly what the case will be, they're probably making it up as they go along, or communication with their web design section is pants.

Even if there is an answer given today, I'd expect it to be within 24 hrs of the boards going offline for migration/merge - which may not be enough notice for others in this position.
A little poor as the question was asked/raised several times in both this and previous threads about the merge. Surely NC must know what they will be doing about name clashes and could advise us - it would probably ease their post-migration support if we know in advance what to do to make it easier on them...

They certainly know about it, or should at least. I clicked "Notify Moderator" on my original question post last week in an attempt to get an answer.
It's just par for the course these days. Sorry to Avatea and all that, but since the changes in Brighton and her move to the US, support on these forums HAS suffered greatly.

If I were you, I'd do what I did, and rename my US forum account name to something slightly different, so you don't have that problem.
[/ QUOTE ]
And that may lead to issues if US is given precedence in naming conflicts and John Doe registers today as FloatingFatMan...
I changed my US then changed it back 5 min later after realising this.

That's what I'm thinking too, and why we need clarification on how exactly the changeover works before I make any changes.
