CoX retail non-existant in shops?

How odd, I was going to start this very thread...

While I was Grazing the PC games section of Game Aberdeen I was approached by the store manager who naturally asked "is there anything I can help you with?"

So just for giggles, instead of my usual response of "no im fine" It dawned on me to ask if they have any copies of CoH/V or ncsoft timecards.

The response I got was no the servers have shut down!!! ...

I promptly corrected his blasphemy.

I actually took a little offence to someone thats "supposed" to have excellent knowledge of games telling me the game I know and love is lond dead...

He worked in a GAME store. Why on Earth did you think he'd have an excellent knowledge of games? (And he was a manager too.)

Before those who are gamers and work in GAME get on my case, I'm basing my knowledge on the 8 or so GAMEs in and around Glasgow/Edinburgh that I've visited, which are full of people who will drool if you ask them anything more complicated than, "Do you have Wii Fit?"

They stopped supplying the shops to make ready for the new expansion boxset?

[/ QUOTE ]That doesn't seem like a bad suggestion, when you break it down further. When i14 hits... it would make perfect sense to re-release CoX as 1 stand alone game, with 2 discs (1 Mac and 1 PC), which would hopefully improve the initial start up time. A few extra goodies, would make me buy it.. as bought the 2 original ones (CoH and Cov) for VIP cape, powerslide etc...

Comet (the UK electrical retailer) has started charging game publishers for space.

[/ QUOTE ]Seems like a strange place to go looking for a copy of CoX efan78. I mean I barely go to Comet anyway for white goods, let alone computer games... As with most people it would be Game first then Gamestation, HMV, Virgin or Zavvi. Even though Virgin became Zavvi, which if it hasn't already closed, will be closing very shortly.

No I didn't really expect him to have good knowledge of very much actually.

It's just their job to know these things. How does a person get to a managerial position at a GAME store if they don't have a working knowledge of games?

The comments from rednames a few months back gave me the impression that this year would probably see another boxset of some form - though I actually see I15 as more of a relaunch-friendly issue than I14.

I14 is mainly MA - not really the best hook to use for people who haven't fancied playing up til now.

I15 is, iirc, the big-storyline issue previously known as I14 before MA was split out into its own issue.
So I15 should hopefully see:
* A big storyline development
* Anticipated graphical improvements (based upon the discovery that the current engine can do more than the devs appreciated even if nothing else, like CoH2, is on the way yet)
* a reasonable base of player generated MA missions
* many of the inevitable I14 bugs squashed (like bugs, funnily enough)

IMO all this would be enough to warrant a relaunch and get some reviewer time to help shore up the game against CO and co. Though personally I'm hoping that we see a decent character-type expansion or rogue/variable morality system coming (or at least being announced) soon, which would just add to the relaunch-ability of the game.

Zavvi (RIP) still carried a few GvE boxes at its demise. But to be honest, would you rather NCSoft be spending its hard-won, er, won on boxed product or on game development?

When Architect comes out - which is a "share and enjoy" feature a la Neverwinter Nights, I'd say that's worthy of a box set relaunch. Until then...

We've been through this plenty of times:

1. game shops do have the right to put whatever they want on the shelves, so why would they put a five year old game there when there's no marketting to back it? The (cough) other MMOs do have that backing.
2. When (cough, cough) another superhero soon makes it to the stores, game mags etc... Who would buy a five year old MMO that not many players know about anymore? Ok, so I almost bought Star Wars Galaxies instead of CoH years ago, but...

In any case, not having at least a Mac box is sad, and for the love of the game, it's sad to see it handled poorly. I was hoping for some changes when NC took it all over, but I guess my expectations of NC was more right than my hopes.

They just keep chuuurning out a multitude of non-marketted semi-good, could-be-good-if-handled-properly, games. The failure of AA and TR was truly sad and the fact they went belly-up so fast just shows there doesn't seem to be any long term planning. Shoot from the hip and hope for a hit, yeah, that usually works... erhm...

Lol, the minions in my local Game Stores know me by sight, I went in once and played "point out the mistakes in the displays," I spotted 12 before the manager came up to me and told me to buy what I wanted and leave.

TBH I really don't go into Game, I usually frequent Gamestation or Chips, at least the guys there know what they're talking about.

It has what was the first traffic free shopping zone in Britain, is matched only by places like the Forest of Dean for access to large woodlands, has some of the tallest streetlights in Britain, and one of the highest teenage pregnancy rates in Britain! Thankyou Wikipedia, and God bless Stevenage!

Gamestation in Castle Mall in Norwich had 3 or 4 copies of the GvE box on the shelf, along with all the guild wars games, Lineage 2, the starter packs for Guild Wars and L2, but no copy of Auto Assault and Tabula Rasa to round off my collection :<

Copy of Tabula Rasa in debenhams in norwich, that little concessionary bit at the top of the store which is apparantly a 'Game'.
and it has guild wars also. no sign of Any COH/V boxes tho

I would like to state, for the record, that everyone at the Game store I work at knows exactly what they're talking about; and between us, there's barely a game we don't know in depth.

Yeah, I remember that, too. It happened in...when was it? Oh, yeah, your imagination. There's never been a plane crash in Stevenage, commercial or private. Or helicopter crash, for that matter. The only high impact death causing incidents around here happen when someone jumps off the top of the St. George's Indoor Market car park to their deaths. Admittedly, living in Stevenage can do that to you, but still.

Also, Stevenage isn't a city, it's a town. Ask Lewis Hamilton, he was born here. Also Xanthus...and we never see the two of them in the same room at the same time.

...Hmm.
