I don't do it myself but I believe Fire/Kin Controllers are popular. They don't really start ripping through mobs until they get Fulcrum Shift at lvl 38 so you'll probably want something else if you want to farm at lower levels.

farming = boring as hell, your not gonna get any fun out of it :P
your gonna be doing the same map over and over and over and over and over...etc.
only other advice i can give you is enjoy the game by doing TFs to get inf

Imps + FS is the mainstay of the build, whilst hasten, transferrence, cinders and FF are required too.
There are plenty of guides around that explain *why* fire/kin is so good.
Might sound overpowered, but nerfing either set means that other combinations with it are nerfed too.
As for fun, farming isn't generally considered fun.
If you are hoping to get a farm build that you really enjoy playing on the same map over, and over, and over again then I would recommend re-evaluating

Spine/Fire is fairly nice too (though I use Spine/Inv when I want to farm cause I tend to be doing other stuff at the same time and the survivability helps when you're alt+tab'd out)

Don't ruin the game for you by farming, start running TFs and hand in the merits for random rolls. It might not net asm uch inf, but it'll be much more fun.

A reformed Plant/Shovel Brute springs to mind 
pity you can't create one.
In practice the most effective will be whatever you know the powersets of intimately so you understand its strengths and weaknesses against the mobs you are fighting. To achieve that you need to play it regularly.
What you need to look for are as high a DPS as possible - AoEs are excellent here but less so when solo combined with some way of mitigating the aggro you receive from it

Deadly Doc 50 Dark/Dark Corr
and lots more on Pinnacle,Union and Defiant
There is the option of having the Fire/Kin troller for farming - and build a different alt for fun - then you get the best of both worlds lol

There is a specific farm build to be successful and a technique, i noticed a farmer recently that ran with me on a few runs and the technique made him so ineffective he wasn't worth the mobs he was spawning.

well if you read the rest of my post im just sticking up for what the game has to offer by doing TFs and other things related and with merits now it can be a lot better way of getting inf since you get lots of drops out of 1 TF, for example posi. and to me that is more fun that doing the same mission over and over, plus you get lvls up and badges out of it, and meet new people
its not like im saying DONT FARM! but imo i think getting more out of a game you pay to play is the better option
Be prepared for your ups n downs thou. Some days the recipes you drop might make you wana shout out loud with happiness.
Other days you might get nout, but the guy who only joined 5mins ago might get a great drop. Like me who just spent the past 6 hours non stop farming and didnt drop one purple lol. What a joke! My purple recipe drought goes on - 4 months now without one. Have I been nerfed? lol

Spine/Fire can compete with Fire/Kin for speed. Have seen it, but my spine/fire isn't there yet and I'm not that used to it. It goes squish faster than my Spine/Inv which I normally use myself when I need a bit of extra inf
