AFK!

There are many times when players need to go AFK. We all have to eat and drink and visit the toilet at some point! These short breaks away are never normally a problem for the team as it’s usually just a few minutes. However, some players take much longer breaks when saying AFK, some take too many AFK’s and some go AFK without saying a word!

Generally I think the community here is very understanding about being AFK but I was curious…what are your breaking points? How much AFKness would you allow? Is there a general limit? What is your limit?

Depends if i know them or not, if i do i dont care how many AFK's they have.

If i dont know them, not very many.

How long is a piece of string? Everyone has different limits on how long 'too long' is, but as long as it's not detrimental to the team, nor taking the mickey (i.e going AFK for 80% of the mission) then I have no problem with it.

That said, I've been in teams when the Tank suddenly goes AFK after herding... not a pretty sight. O.o

15-20 minutes outside a mish is what I would allow.
AFK without saying you are going AFK and being afk for an entire mish(even with a warning) is my breaking point.
Unless I ofcourse know the player very well. Then anything goes really.

And personally I go AFK for at most 5minutes(extreme cases) any longer than that and I simply log.

That doesn't affect me. I have quite literally refused to seriously roleplay with people I had got to know quite well because they thought it was fine to wander off and do the ironing during RP sessions. I have got very angry with my other half because she insisted that she could roleplay live, and in tells with someone else at the same time (not technically AFK, but it gives the same result).

I actually find that I get more annoyed if friends basically take advantage of you by afking during missions, thinking you won't mind because you're a friend.

Mind you, this is why I solo a lot, if I really do want to stop in the middle of a mission and chat (or go to the toilet, or stop to make food, or wander off down the shops), I'm not putting anyone else out while I do it.

If I have to do more than a quick bio during a mission, I'll always offer to wait outside... If it's gonna take more then 5 minutes, I'll drop from the team so as to not inconvenience anyone. I generally expect similar courtesy's from everyone.

From friends I don't mind too much, and I don't actually team with anyone except friends. So it's generally not an issue.

What *does* irritate me however is when people suddenly have to go AFK during a fight. Can't they take at least ten seconds to make sure the fight is under control? But then, unless I die, it still doesn't bother me that much.

Yea i can see that having half your role playing squad AFK would break the emersion.

It's sometimes a problem on PuGs when a quarter or more of the team go afk without warning. Otherwise it's fine, though I fully support kicking and immediately sending a friendly tell and a reinvite to anyone afk in a mish for more than a few mins after a mish has ended.

I will generally ask if they want me to go outside - that simple courtesy is often enough for them to say "No stick around" and I'll follow it with a "kick me if the mission ends before I return"

I will generally extend the same courtesy to somebody especially if they tell me they are going AFK but we can't always be sure.

I've known people get in mish, go AFK with no warning and then return at the end of the mish - that doesn't jibe well with me and so they get short shrift. However, we all know that Real Life can interfere and this really is just a game so I tend not to stress about it too much

I agree with Chatarsis on this one - if you're doing something important, then go AFK outside the mission. It's sod's law that they won't be back by the time you're done, and then you have to wait for them to exit.

I think going AFK a lot during the majority of most missions can take the mick. It's really down to the players to try and politely ask (perhaps outside of team chat) is everything ok? is there something you need to do? would it be better if they logged off for a bit and re-joined later? That kind of 'niceness'. It saves frustration.

Heh.. well have had this a few times.
Team is going strong we get someone asking to join, we accept.
In the mission the new player says brb or asking.. we say ok.
Sometimes we are quick and finish mission before the newcomer comes back... we are about to say.. kicking to get new mission.. ofc just before that the player says back. And the usual Wb is said.

We get a new mission.. and the newcomer dont even say brb... before going afk. We notice this often.. standing still at entrance.
ooooo.. thats .. auto-kick reason if I knew any ;D

I always try to leave a mission or the team if I have to go AFK for more than a few minutes.

However, sometimes things crop up that are too urgent for that (like rescuing the cat from the pond). If that does happen, I think it is quite reasonable to kick me from the team.

I really should do something about this signature.

The only times I think I would auto kick someone iis if they left there toon stuck in the last mish and the team needs to move on, to anyone caught potentially trying to leech Xp there behaviour will be questioned with tells before the inevitable, if we still think they are taking the Mick, Monty Python like boot.
TF's seem to be alittle more flexible and I've seen people AFK for 10-15 mins without any problems or objections (needed to eat/unexpected visitor etc.) but again as someone said it often depend how well you know the player invovlved.

well depends on the situation and vies of the team howver for me. when i say afk bio drink etc i try to be max of 5 mins. if i know ill be more then tht i normally offer to leave the mish unless the odd farm with a lky. if im with a lky in normal mishes i try to either get cover or if possable wait till end of mish

If I go AFK I mostly try to do that in between missions and no longer then 5 minutes. Otherwise I just log.

When someone is constantly going AFK or stays AFK for a a whole mission I'd kick the "leecher?" (if I would be the team leader...which thank god I'm not most of the time )

If I have to go afk in a mission I'll always make sure that the rest of the team can handle it without me(theoretically of course ).

When I must go AFK I allways warn them and when it appears to be a longer break then I too offer to go outside. Most often people will tell you to just stay though. But it is a curtosy to ask. Never assume they will allow it.

As for people going AFK. Leechers are much more rarer these days but they do happen. At the end of a mission i always suggest to kick an AFK person so we can continue on, with an optional reinvite when they are not suspect of leeching.

I always make sure I actually have the time for at least a full mish before teaming. If I DO have to go AFK while in a mish with a team (friends of not) I will explain why I go AFK and it usually would be a bathroom break, the phone (which is rarely) or that someone is at the door (also rarely). So it's hardly ever more then a couple of minutes.
And if it's a serious reason which will take more time I will politely excuse myself en remove myself from the team.

I personally never met a leecher sofar. Only friends who asked permission to do so .
But the idea of leeching without permission... makes me chilly. I wouldn't permit it..and kick the leecher.

If it's a PuG, I'll actually take more liberties.
Ie: just say "brb", "brb - bio" or "afk" for the reasons I need to go afk. When it takes longer then I expected/find social, I'll return to say sorry, it's better I log out (if I can return). There's also the times where the brbs follow each other too fast, and then I'll log too.
How ever, I have no qualms with going afk for 15 minutes to go to the bathroom, get a drink, and such.

Though some teams that are better/friendlier, I'll also be more considerate.

If it's a team of friends, I'll try to limit my afk time, and state the reasons better.

on RP... I've been known to RP three scenes at the same time, admittedly, that was on IRC and rare. I do RP 2 scenes at the same time often enough. I don't do this and be in a mass/public RP scene like GG.

It's the small scenes that allow for this, when I know the othr players well enough, regarding their speed and such, also, often enough I'll give the warning that "I'm also RPing an other scene, but that shouldn't slow me down too much"

But yeah, going fully AFK in the middle of a scene is annoying, rather rude if it's for such reasons as ironing...

I always AFK when I hit the Exit Mission button, straight away. That way part of the time I'm away is downtime anyway as people decide what to do next.

People entering a mission and immediately AFKing can annoy me, especially if they take a while, after a few minutes I tend to start asking if they're back yet and so on.

Meh. It's not like I'm great at staying alive anyways

If its a flying toon I tend to float straight upwards just in case. TPers are just left at the mercy of the game until I get back.

The worst is when someone calls to the door and you've to bail mid-mish. I hate doing that to people. Silly RL friends. Go away!
