Are melee ATs slowly becoming obselete??

As everyone knows there have been a few recent changes to ET and TF which has brought mixed feelings, and I'm sure there have been other minor changes to other sets, but yet another AT set is going to be nerfed in the near distant future...

Spines (Here's the source)

I, for one, am not happy about this in the slightest. Not only is spines butt ugly to look at (which puts a lot of people off) but where Castle states that there is slows stacked from each attack pretty much, this can be countered with IO sets, most of which aren't that expensive to buy. Now from a PvP angle, the immob from impale is easily countered from CJ, or doesn't last that long (again due to IO sets). IO sets now provide res to S/L and also toxic damage (which are slightly more expensive). So there is a ton of res to what spines is dealing out. They say the game wasn't made harder to compensate for the introduction of IOs, but it seems to me due to IOs that sets like this are going to be nerfed. Maybe I'm reading it all wrong but, since the release of IOs there have been more power nerfs and changes than I can possibly remember, some of them needed, some of them not.

Which also begs the question, what's next to be changed/nerfed??

Your thoughts please...

From what I've gathered on this subject, the look at the set won't be coming for a year or so (which may or may not be "near distant future").

And IO sets are not to be considered when balancing powers, which have been stated many times by the devs. That said, IOs should in some way be balanced against powers.

In answer to the opening title, "Are melee sets becoming obsolete?"

No. I don't think so. Yes they're getting balanced, but if the spines "rework" comes out anything like the Claws one currently on test, I wouldn't say we've got anything to worry about.

BUT THEY SLIGHTLY REDUCED THE STRENGTH OF FOCUS.

ALL IS LOST. THE SET IS USELESS NOW.

This is what's known as the "Del Shannon" response to power set changes.

No, they're not. A majority of my toons are melee's, nerf or no nerf that's how they'll stay.

Sincerely doubt melee ATs will become obsolete.

Sorry Shen I can't agree.
Spines does need a look at for the reasons Castle stated, all other melee sets have one secondary effect, Spines has how many? 3?
The argument that Spines has been "nerfed" by the piddly little resistance from IOs is flawed as the resistances provided are fairly evenly distributed beween damage types. Also there's the matter of Spines being primarily Lethal based... just like 5 other melee sets, all of which seem perfectly effective 3 issued on from the arrival of IOs.

Melee ATs are far from obsolete (or going that way). I have full confidence in Castle and his power tweaking. I've yet to see a bad change.

Brutes will never stop being the best AT in the game. And they're melee.

I've only just realised what ET and TF mean...

And I've got an Energy Melee brute...

And I haven't noticed any changes...

Obsolete? Right. Ok. Go get me a blaster that can tank.

They've always been obselete while we've had controllers and defenders.

Interesting thread stateside. Buffs > Nerfs.

So the devs are very bad indeed. buffs and nerfs should be equal.

Or,playing devils advocate to a game that is allready verging on too easy, nerfs > Buffs.

Maybe slightly obselete in most teams, (bar the token granite tank) Especially scrappers

But most mele ATs are so much easy mode most of the time it's no challange.

If that's true, why are controllers the toons used for farming?

I did forget to mention the exception of tanks

But I've heard many a time, when someone wants to do a MoSTF run blueside, they don't want a scrapper, fo a lot of reasons, main one i've heard is lack of damage. This isn't going to exactly help tbh

What sort of skewed MoSTFs have you been doing?

First one i ever successed and all following runs have 2/3 scrappers in them. Nothing wrong with them

As far as I can see people build dream teams and then moan how something isn't challenging anymore.

Scrappers were always designed as the high-soloability AT (fairly wacky in a game designed by someone who didn't believe in soloing, but the world's a funny place). That requires them to have good offense and good defense, but not exceptional versions of either. So, Scappers are always going to be less than perfect additions to teams featuring a perfect profile.

However, obsolete? I don't think so. Aside from anything else, for people who like soloing (like me), Scrapper is still a good choice.
