Room 101 - CoX style

Good morning everyone!

So it’s 9.30 on a lovely Monday morning and I find I’m all alone and bored in the office (bloody lazy “working from home” people – I think I’ll call some just to wake them up!). As a consequence I got to thinking about an episode of ‘room 101’ I was watching last night in the context of CoX.

So….my issue for potential discussion is; If you had to choose, what would be your 3 biggest annoyances with the game? That’s heroes or villains. I’m thinking irritating design “quirks” or gameplay mechanics rather than “they nerfed my toons back in I3!!!” or “omg this lag sux, the devs sux!!11!” etc…

Not so much an opportunity to moan (I mean who feels whiney on a Monday morning?...) as to vent about those little eccentricities that we know and…try to love.

I’ll start the ball rolling with my top 3 (by no means the definitive list). Note that they are mostly heroes side (except #2), which is probably because villains (being newer) was imho designed a lot better (even though i’m almost exclusively hero side).

Here we are then;

1)The great Paragon Marathon – This covers a few different but connected issues that mostly impact hero side and annoy the hell out of me every time I start a new toon. Who on earth thought it would be a good idea for so many of the heroes contacts to dole out pointless talk-to missions that involve traversing multiple zones just to be sent straight back again? The introduction of the temp travel powers from SG missions has been a god-send in this regard but what’s the point? And don’t even get me started on why your contacts won’t give you their phone number until you’ve done 2 dozen of these irritating fun runs. My personal most annoying run around mission ever has to go to the capes mission. Pardon? The contact in IP is…where? For those of us old (read wise) enough to remember a time before SG base teleporters, orob portals, pocket D tp etc. this was a true pain in the wazoo, especially for fliers. You really notice the difference when you do the villains version – it feels so much more streamlined and realistic. The various advancements just listed help the situation a lot but…why not just rethink those missions/contacts instead? Why not have all contacts callable after say, 3-5 missions?

2)Costumes. Being completely and unashamedly vain, my heroes costumes are one of the most important aspects of my gameplay. Sometimes a good concept (of which the costume is a key component) can be the difference between a toon making the grade or being consigned to the great alt graveyard in the sky. My personal gripe here is why not all options are available with other options in the tailors. Why can’t I have certain gloves when I have a sleeveless jacket? Why can’t I have some masks (thinking neck cover etc.) and other face options like makeup or tattoos? If the issue is clipping then…well that’s silly. You see toons running around all the time that have hair going through capes (uggghhhhh) and so on, but we don’t stop those options. If everything is available with everything then we can put anything we like together….then if there’s clipping we can choose whether or not to keep those changes. I personally can’t stand clipping (you might have gotten that impression) so I would have to be mindful of that, but dammit I want large gloves with my sleeveless trenchcoat! (note: that last part was purely hypothetical, I would never do that or Gok would kill me).

3)The Shadow Shard. Oh…..now where to start with this one? I’m sure that somebody wise once said something like the saddest thing in life is to see potential wasted. I’m not sure who it was but I think they had probably been to the shards. I ran a shard tf on Saturday for the rularuu bow and dear god was it an endurance test. Personally I like the idea of the shards. I like the look, the floaty rocks, the eerie atmosphere and the impressive landscape – but it’s just so pointless! We did the 2nd TF (I think – it’s from the plain looking redhead lady and ends in a cave that you can’t see 2ft ahead in) and it was just a prime example of multiple design flaws converging to create one of the most irritating arcs in the game. Jump across half of the shard? Check. Missions to talk to someone in skyway? (I think it was anyway) Check. Can’t call contact? Of course not – off I go back. Sigh. My question is….who thought this would be fun? Who sat down and thought up the idea? Who is that cruel!!!

*takes medication*

*feeling calmer*

So anyway, those are my top 3 little CoX quirks that I’d rather like to see eradicated with extreme prejudice. Close but not quite making the list were; Tfs in general and the fact that 90% of them are an excruciating series of identical missions (i’m looking at you Citadel and Manticore!) and only being able to have 3 missions open at a time…I’m a superhero for the love of god, I can multitask!

So please, delight me with your own personal favourite “design features” that you would like to see consigned to the CoX room 101. Feel free to complain, moan, whine, whinge, grumble, grump and groan as you see fit, it is Monday morning after all.

Hehe yeah the SFs are infinitely better designed than the TFs....saying that though there are some fun ones. I wouldn't give up Ernesto Hess for all the Inf in the world, but the Shadow Shard TFs do need some loving.

My gripe, the one thing I'd consign to Room 101 CoX would be imitation heroes. You see them about all over the place: people making characters exactly like their favourite superhero from the comics, but with enough peripheral difference that Marvel wont have a heart attack. This game has the greatest character creation system when compared to all the current MMOs on the market, and I can understand being inspired by your favourites, but please dont just rip them off. Have a bit of imagination: bring your own touch to the Hero (or villain I hasten to add so late into the rant) that you're about to take through the levels.

Ooh and: Broadcast yammering.....someone decides to have a conversation with the person standing next to them, using Broadcast chat in a public zone. Okay I can understand in an instance where it's all yours; plus we've all made the mistake I'm sure where Broadcast is selected and you've accidentally sent your team message to that instead. If it happens, and I've done it myself, I just say "oops" or "Sorry folks" and revert to team. Yet there are folks who will have whole conversations across entire zones, they get shouted at inevitibly, but if it could be stopped dead...Yeah Devs, you heard me: drop everything you're doing and make the chat system idiot proof, I demand it.....!!!!! :P

lol seriously though: I think that's all I can dredge from my brain atm.

I feel you on the immitation heroes front, seems such a waste to immitate when you can innovate!

Now that i've got the brain-juices flowing (it's nearly lunchtime - yay!) i've thought of a few more;

* Unneccesary AoE powers/buffing/power spamming in public places. I'm thinking mostly the AH/BM here. Why run shadowfall in Wentworths? Why cast your newly IOed up fire/ice/etc sheilds on random strangers who have neither asked for nor want to be set ablaze whilst shopping? One of my personal pet peeves goes out to Arctic Fog from Cold domination - it's very unpleasant trying to shop with that infernal Woooooooooo cycling round and round my speakers. (and no i won't turn my sound off, it's easier to change everyone else! )

* L33t speak - just no.

* The AH system - just a few QoL changes here would make it SO much better. Let us adjust the font size - my poor ageing eyes take offense at having to sit 5 inches away from the screen to find out if that IO recipe i'm looking at written in tiny red letters is an acc/dam or an acc/end. When you dump an IO/salvage in the AH to sell, have a button that lets you automatically find it on the system so you can see the most recent prices, or perhaps just have a quick sell option that automatically sets anything you drop in to an average of the last 5 sale prices. Sure some people would lose some inf by not being bothered to find the absolute best price for things but for those situations where you just want to clear stuff it would make things much easier.

* This is kind of a player gripe, so no offense meant but...people who take a buff set, advertise as said buff set then dont have/use the main powers in said set. I'm thinking of a situation recently where I got a tell from a "bubbler" who i invited (ice tank at the time so hell yeah!) only to find they had none of the powers in the set that affect only other players. As if this wasn't bad enough they also didn't run dispersion bubble (despite it being politely requested) and detained random mobs whilst running force bubble constantly....arg! Fair do's if you want to play a bubbler without the ally buffs - each to thier own and I welcome experimental builds but dno't advertise yourself as a bubbler/buffer if you don't fulfil on your promise.

* A VERY personal one here and no doubt controversial, and not one i'd want anything done about...I just find it kinda sad these days that we see so few fire/kins being played for fun. It was my first ever toon to 50 (3rd ever rolled) adnt he most fun i've had in the game. I had no idea how "uber" they were at the time and teamed/soloed to 50 slowly but surely. This was just after I3 i think (it was just after they changed it so you could only have 3 imps - so whenever that was) and she hit 50 probably just before I5. I think it's a wonderful combo irrespective of thier herding/PLing potential (and wonderfully overpowered) but it seems all I see of them these days are farming/PLing in PI (can't remember the last time I saw a non lvl-50), all with nearly the EXACT SAME cookie cutter build. It just seems they've been relegated to farming tools rather than good fun toons. And some of the names...you can tell by the lack of imagination that they were only lvled for one purpose. My hats off to any litle fire/kin's out there in team/solo pvp enjoying your experience, it's a wonderful thing (oh and look me up, i want to see you to beleive it )

Hmm... the three most annoying things in CoX.

I would have to agree on the Shadow Shards. They're long, they're tedious and they're boring. SSTF1 takes around 7 hours in a decent team, and thats not something alot of people can commit to, even splitting it up in two sessions makes it hard to plan. Givign them some love would be nice, as well as giving the shadowshards some more content in general. They're beautfilly designed zones, which are only seen by heroes for the most part (villains get some missions there). I'd like to see something that would make me wanna visit the shadow shards more.

Second thing is that the hero side feels a little bland and boring compared to villains, speaking mission and strikeforce wise. Villains have lots of intresting contacts and mission arcs, and the strike forces are very nicely designed imo. Compared to hero side where you do same missions over and over and suddenly there's an AV in the end. Is it synpases where you do 4 missions in a row which are exakt replicas of each other. Granted heroes have some nice places now with Hollows, Faultline and Croatoa which have good story and intresting missions.

and thirdly, Costumes i agree on. There's certain combination and features i would very much like to see added in the costume creator. And when it comes to items added in Issue 11 and 12 i will have to say it's been rather sparse... I'm hoping Issue 13 will add a great deal new cossie items.

Dunno what Room 101 is, but I always love to rant.

Heroside content is so freaking boring that my highest hero is level 36. And that was soooo painful. I think he only got that high because he was my first actual (non-screwed-up) hero so I didn't know it'd stay boring forever. Where the heck are all the well-written arcs CoV has? And contacts that are interesting and have personalities, as opposed to "Generic random non-interesting human #86"? Well, they're in the Hollows, Faultline, Striga and Croatoa. That's it. 4 extremely short arcs per zone. And these are "out of the way" zones, too. In the standard zones it's full of faceless monkeys giving you 3 missions of "Defeat 30 Council" in a row, followed by a Talk mission 5 zones away. And then you get a souvenir out of nowhere explaining that you just completed a "Story Arc". Pfft. Redo them -all- at some point, PLEASE.

Same goes for the Task Force Commander accolade requirement TFs - mostly Positron of course. These just NEED a revamp.

Finally, the way Veteran Rewards work. Don't get me wrong, I love the idea! But... eh, this is just a personal issue. I just really wish we could pick one from the full list every 3 months. I've only been playing for over half a year and I realise that I'll probably never get a chance to experience some of the cooler vet rewards - I still don't even have Sands of Mu. Unless the game gets an engine overhaul and CO and DCUO spark a wider interest in the Superhero MMO genre, well... you know where I'm going with this. I'll keep playing as long as it lasts, but I was already "treated" to Greek Letters not long ago...
I realise I'm probably being unreasonable about this. But a shop-like system with 1 "purchase" made available per 3 months would be great for me. Now excuse me as I return to staring at the Vet Arachnos Helmets, grinding my teeth.

All the times I've taken a break from Co*, it's never been the game that's got on my nerves and made me wanted to break things, it's been the players.

There really are some utterly idiotic brainless pillocks around, and unfortunately these days, they seem to be the majority rather than the minority. I'm sure this has got worse since i6 when I started playing, but PuGing these days has become an exercise in frustration.

Not sure if this qualifies as a 101-stylee beef, but...

#1 - Is it just me, or are Heroes weedier than Villians? All my villain toons are tough enough to take on yellow and even orange-conning foes without even breaking a sweat, but if I try and do that with any of my heroes they need a cup of tea and a lie down for ten minutes afterwards - if they haven't already died. I've lost count of the number of rumbles where my hero toon has had to run away from a mob screaming like a girl because she's down to 'flashing red' on her healthbar. And that's even the ones with self-healing abilities!

And - Ohhh, I've definitely got a couple of Mastermind 101s! And they're both to do with the Henchman!

#2 - Okay, here's the scene: my trusty Henchmen and I are off to do a mission. We charge across the town, slaughtering mobs of our chosen badge-earning flavour of the day as we go, until we arrive outside the entrance of our mission venue. I jump in, my trusty Henchman follow me and then...
... my Henchman are gone. Vanished, in a puff of smoke, it seems! So gone are they, that I have to re-summon them all, and then individually re-equip them all... and then put them in defensive mode and tell them to follow me. WHY? Why must this happen every time I enter a mission? Have Doors of Henchman Instant Death been installed on missions as some sort of security device or something? It happens on ferries too - what's up, do they get seasick and abandon ship? It's a total pain in the you-know-what to keep having to go all through that summon-equip-give-orders rigmarole all over again just because you've gone through a door or jumped on a boat.

#3 - I have always been under the impression that Henchman, by definition, do what their Master, i.e. ME, tells them to do. So WHY, when I tell my Henchman to FOLLOW me, does at least one of them insist on marching ten feet AHEAD of me to punch an orange-conning Wolf Spider Huntsman toting a Laser Cannon?? (This is a PARTICULARLY stupid course of action when you also consider that said Henchman HAS A GUN, which he will happily use to mow down blue and green-conning mobs that he probably COULD just punch.) What is the point of me taking Dark Miasma as a secondary power if they run off and do their own thing when I'm trying to heal them?? Huh?? HUH??!!

*hyperventilates*

Okay, I'm going to have to eat some chocolate now... I'm coming over all emotional...

1. Rikti/Nemesis/the Cimoreroara guy I cant remember - Any Generic common enemies out there; we pick hero and villians characters in order to be different, to face different challenges, to be good or to be evil, we dont need content that see's them on the same side, we need events and content that set them against one another (not just pvp but bigger and more varied issues). The threat to Paragon should be the villians not handlebar headed aliens or steam powered rejects from an aborted sequel to Chitty Chitty Bang Bang.

2. Yeah the mismatched clothing in the tailors is a pain,but what is the point of clothing when its obliterated behind the intrusive aura created by the power you use... click a toggle power and whoosh you become blurred behind some sickly coloured fog, click another and bright sparkles destroy the contrast...pick Inv as a powerset and you may as well play a silhouette as you lose visibility of all material detail...grrr maybe that should have been number 1.... grrr and then you get some temporary power like the speed boost and you have to wear lime green hoops on your feet, grr that looks sooo ridiculous, have you seen those silly hoops spiraling at you feet....GET RID OF THEM!!

3. Kicking moves/animations...too few in the game every powerset should have a cool kick style move to break up the monotony of upper body strikes. Of the ones we do have outside MA the animations are poor (kick in Fighting looks like you got your leg caught on something rather than dishing out pain).... I'd like to see some grab moves too but I guess that is beyond the game engine......

sorry Col, I should have clarified on the concept rather than assuming everyone knew what I was on about

Room 101 originates (i think - please correct if wrong) from the Orson Wells novel "1984" in which people live in a true "big brother" state complete with thought police and what-not. People who refuse to conform are arrested and sometimes tortured in the eponymous "room 101" - which is where you come face to face with whatever your greatest fear is. example: in the film the guy was afraid of rats so they put a helmet on him that had rats in it etc.

This was subsequently used as a basis for a comedic chat-show in England whereby celebrities (or varying standards of fame) are invited to nominate several of thier pet hates to the host who will then decide whether to consign them to room 101 where they are destroyed and erased from reality (this last part is debateable as i'm sure someone put Anne Robinson in once).

Hmmm, interesting question.

First and foremost, zoning. The Cape mission I don't really mind because of the travel power I already have then.(although even flying that distance gets a bit boring). It makes no sense too. If a contact is in Steel Canyon, give me missions in Steel Canyon...but noooo...continueing on that, stop sending me to talk to people. If I want to learn about Reputation, Warburg, The Hollows, Siren's thingy(yeah...that is how much I am of a pvper) I'll go there myself...or at least make it optional...or make a contact in that zone give me that mission.

Second, make my contacts take stuff from me...most of the time I don't need the enhancements I get from missions, why can't I sell them to the contacts...so you can do some quick enhancement selling, inspi buying and getting a new mission at the same time.

And last but not least: I am for example level 13 and suddenly my contacts says: You need to be level 14 before I can give you more missions. So I grind my way to 14 and then she says: I need you to meet a new contact.

Hurray! New contact. So I run/tp/fly/jump to new contact and what does he say: You need to be at least level 15 before you can do my stuff.

What the...

1. Having a defunct (Dead) soundcard the missions to click glowies are a major pain (ITA) I would like to see next to or under the x glowies to click message a coloured bar going from black through red, yellow and green, depending on your proximity to a non clicked glowie, so I would have a graphical hot/cold representation of the audio proximity effect.

2.Hero (and Villain) mobs defeating their own side or not assisting you...
Noted in Villain Breakout Tutorial mission, 'Longbow Warden has defeated Prison Warden' type messages.
Also a similar effect when an enemy mob is outnumbered by another mob, why don't they just run off and leave if you don't attack them, they just all turn on you.
The Prisoner mobs in Brickstown surrounding a police officer once you go to help, the policeman walks away and starts using his notebook whilst you deal with the prisoners solo, and you get no thanks from him either.

3 Limited access to safeguard/mayhem missions, especially for badgers, if you miss the chance to grab the exploration badge then once you out level that specific mission set you cannot go back and get the badge. There should be a high level untimed patrol mission that takes you from bank zone to bank zone (mission area) looking out for villains (or heroes) and letting you do all the side missions, villains would be out to damage as much as possible along with additional gains if they rob every bank, untimed would allow the badgers time to collect any missing badges.

---

Two others just to make a point:

4. Mission's that say go defeat x in zone y, subzone z for example, such as 'The Maw' in 'Striga' if you haven't been all over the map you probably won't have the subzone marker listed on your minimap. Missions specifying a subzone should force it's marker onto the minimap.

5. Level 100 GM's and Hamidon getting ignored, (I wonder why...) I will post a suggestion about a possible fix for them in the suggestions forum later.

Tekna Logik leader of Teknas Tormentors on Defiant.

[/ QUOTE ]
The technical reason for that one's that auras are implemented as additative colours; whatever the underlying colour, an aura's colour is added (as Red Green Blue levels) to the top of it to get the overall effect. Works fine for most colours, but as black has Red=0, Blue=0, Green=0, "adding" black to any underlying colour doesn't change it in the slightest. Bit of a faux pas when they were designing the system, IMHO.

Anyway, my list for the Room:

1) Giant Monsters. At the moment they're neither fish nor fowl; their hits have been beefed up so you need several teams to take one down, while their rewards have been lowered so much it's not worth the while of even one team making the effort. Do these sad, ignored monsters a favour, and end their unloved multiple wandering through Kings and IP.

2) "Looks like you're busy at the moment"...or, what they really mean: "I'm a regular contact on the closest of terms with you, you're on a critically important Task Force for a signature hero, need to prep for an AV fight, so...no, I won't sell you any insps ". Gah!

3) Villain side; doing one of several arcs, and get sent to visit another contact part way through. Other contact: "I don't like what you're doing, so do what I say now or you'll be in big trouble.". Me: "What!?! Only a 'Yes, OK' option, no 'Punch his lights out and hang the consequences!?!?'". More gah!

Hmmm...

Villain side: Railroaded content. Now implemented in the newer zones on Hero side though somehow it seems less bad since these aren't your 'main' contacts.

Yes, the contacts have interesting concepts and story arcs to go with them, but that seems to be at the cost of choice. By level 15 in CoH I have a half-dozen contacts open. At the same point in CoV I seem to be lucky to have one. If I don't want to follow that arc right now, I need to go do newspaper missions until my broker will give me another contact. Villain side has always seemed far more linear than hero side. Possibly why I don't get on with it.

That said, the oft mentioned hero-side habit of a contact giving you a mission half-way across the city, involving two changes of train is just old-school MMO theory: keep them online and paying subs by dragging out the travel times. Stoopid!

Mine:

1.- Cimerora arc, I hate the idea of doing same arc again and again just to gain entrance to a zone. I guess Cimerora should be accessed from whatever minimum lvl you need to get in, kinda hazard zone and the arc should be given by a contact inside Cimerora so you can choose either do it or not.-

2.- Positron TF, it feels like a "revolution tax" you have to pay to get the Accolades. The other TF's vary from bad (Synapse) to good (Sister Psyche), no complaints there, it is what it is, but Positron TF is too much, it feels like a penitence or something. Iirc, they have plans to revamp it, well, now it's not too soon.

3.- Heroside Respec Trials, I think the reactor should be revamped somehow, you spend a 10% of the overall completion time actually doing something and the remaining 90% just waiting at the reactor for waves to spawn. Don't know if they could make them spawn after 15 seconds since last foe is killed (15 secs should be enough to bubble up and go back for more) or something, if it takes longer then go check the corridor looking for a teleporter or look underneath the generator in case a foe has been knocked back there (they could fix that too now that I think). It would also be nice to tag the glowies saying "NOTHING WILL HAPPEN IF YOU CLICK THIS GLOWIE, NO LESS COOLANT BELTS, NO MORE WAVES AND NO LUSCA SPAWNING IN REACTOR"

Edit: Oh, I forgot one, remembered it after Coin's post, damn runners on office/warehouse mishes, why can't they just run towards the door and disappear instead of returning back to push you again and again while you're ( at least theorically) fighting the foes that threaten their lives? They're all nemesis Automatons I tell you, it's all a Nemesis plot!

It's a polution control thing. Paragon City has banned large cars due to their excessive polution. This is also why there are no busses... diesel is death!

The whole world is a little bit out of whack I think. In order to be of an 'average' eye to eye height with contacts and human enemies my hero is around six and a half feet tall. I can't use my real life, statistically average height of 5'9, because I'll be a midget.

Then the cars are too small. But in Paragon City, holy [censored], they have space to spare because they love wasting it. I can say with confidence that the many eight foot tall behemoths I've created have never even seen a ceiling, and appreciate a city that makes sure every single door is well over eight feet tall and probably five wide. The mighty Lord Khorak, practically a Giant Monster unto himself, can march with confident arrogance through any door he encounters.

I used to work for a local council and I feel your the type who writes a lot of letters aren't you mother

I miss him in the weeping of the rain;
I want him at the shrinking of the tide;
The old snows melt from every mountain-side,
And last year's leaves are smoke in every lane;
But last year's bitter loving must remain
