Something big costumewise I think is coming... Jay's been -awfully- quite for a while, meaning either something big is coming to the system, or he's working on conversions for any possible engine update.

Hmmm, Yes it has been quiet,... too quiet!.

... or maybe Jay has fallen down the toilet, his favorite toilet, you know, the one he likes to get inspiration from for cossie parts.

Moonwalking you say?

On a slightly different note, wasn't there an official semi-denial that player-made content would be in I13? I got the impression that the article which suggested it was due in I13 was less than reliable.

IIRC the tone of the denial was along the lines player created content has been neither confirmed or denied to be in I13.

So basically don't discount anything about I13 until it happens.

Or rather don't assume anything until it's been officially confirmed.

I think an engine update would be excellent. However, NC don't want to alienate some of their player-base at the lower end of the hardware spectrum but at the same time, there is little doubt in my mind that an engine update will be required to prepare for the competition.

If an engine update isn't on the cards I will be highly surprised.

Apaarently Eve online runs two clients from the same servers why should NC not do the same?

Posted

Eve does have 2 different engines at play (the Trinity install also includes the original engine, and basically adds more prettiness to it, whilst also changing the textures for the ships (which some players didnt like)).
The fact that the Trinity engine took them quite a while (read more than a year) of working on it to get it ready shows how much hard work it can be...

But saying that as well since the launch of City Of Heroes players have been lost due to various Issues (the game expansion) increasing in various ways the minimum requirements (IIRC as well City of Villains has a HIGHER recommended spec than City of Heroes).

Depending on how much of an engine upgrade the game is recieving, and also due to better coding (in theory) the requirements could be dropped so that we could see a performance increase, especially on the "average" computer...

well they said i13 was going to be bigger then i12. and tbh, in my eyes, from what we've heard. villain patrons, bases, etc it doesnt sound like i13 is tht much bigger, so they have to have something massive. infact ground breaking, earth shattering in the background.

*imagines massive god like popcorn monsters invading the game*

I thinks its fairly certain that haven't revealed the full extent of the new features of i13 yet, so I will be refraining from determining its size till i see what's on offer!

Player created content if done right is a [censored] Godzilla, King [censored] Kong and the damn Nuclear bomb rolled up into one. Also base overhaul to something that no longer resembles Jack Emmerts afterthoughts would be a major change to the game.

All this without mentioning VPP respec ability, a new power set and I'm willing to be they are going to throw some vanilla content in the mix as well.

If they announce anything more for Issue 13 -and- manage to pull it all off, I think I'm going to wet my pants from joy and then faint.

Can we have video footage and hourly in-game reenactment?

Well, they've not actually announced very much at all so far

IMO, their best course of action, engine update wise, would be to throw away OpenGL and go pure DirectX. DX is far more efficient at what it does, and would run on lesser hardware whilst giving better output.

Of course, along with a new 3D engine, new geometry for the avatars is a must too!

[/ QUOTE ]

From a marketing perspective, it would make more sense to give an engine update maybe 6 weeks to 2 months or so after the competition hits. Many people will check out DCUO and CO etc and will be comparing it to CoX. Then a major update comes out for CoX and entices those players back into the fold. If you release it before the competition comes out, you've nothing to tempt them back with if they like the other stuff

A very good point there, Scarlet. It would certainly make more sense to do it that way.

Huh. CoX already has brilliant graphics for its age. I've honestly -never- found myself wishing for any more detail.

But then I don't see my character's face often from the 3rd person behind view, so maybe I can't value the ideas of animated faces and such.

Nifty but unnecessary stuff, I suppose, would be separated fingers on non-VEATs. And maybe mouth-moving talking animations like they have in WoW bound directly to when you say something in Local or Broadcast. Adding exclamations or questionmarks changing the animation, etc.

/e talk is fine too though. *shrug*

Posted

The level of detail we get is generally fine, but the current OpenGL engine is VERY inefficient compared with similar DirectX engines, and really could do with replacing. At our current level of graphics, PC's of FAR lower spec than now should be able to enjoy the game in all its glory, but can't.

One thing we DO definitely need, even if they don't update the game engine, is better avatars, with a better skeleton. The ones we currently have are, quite honestly, dreadful. They animate poorly, clip constantly, and generally just look meh. We need better detailing on faces too, rather than the pretty low res textures we currently have.

I believe the term 'need' in the above post should be replaced with 'want'.

I dunno, 'need' seems... too needy.

When your character tries to have a coffee, and succeeds only in either pouring it over their shoulder, or shoving the cup straight through their forehead, want becomes need.

Not to mention various joints looking almost disconnected at times, and the DREADFUL deforming when you adjust the scales...

On a similar topic, there's a move in the dual blades set (i think it's ablating strike) where the final body position before they return to the normal ready stance twists the stomach in very painful looking way!

It's not so much for the user of the avatar, it's more for the way it helps present yourself to others in-game.
Animated faces would make our avatars seem more alive.

Then we could make a CoH version of the internet is for porn. Seems that almost everything gets its own version of the song, haven't found a CoH one yet.

[/ QUOTE ]Or maybe people should just discover and be content with the Avenue Q version of internet is for porn.

Also, I think CoH would be even better for movie making if there was lip movement.
