Is PvP in COH / COV any good ?
Hey again Risen,
I'm sorry tonight was your first night out in a PvP zone (if it indeed was). It wasn't the most pleasant crowd. PvP quickly changes pace and can be quite unbalanced at times. I know you didn't have much luck in there tonight but dont let it discourage you. A defender like yourself needs a good team to keep you protected so you can shine. Defenders don't do a whole lot of dmg and they are mostly reliant on teams to stand some kind of chance.
As far as your powers go there's nothing wrong with them. You did play against a couple of us thats been grouping together since we were baby heroes so we pretty much know what the other person is going to do which in your case didn't make it easier.
For your powers. Nothing wrong with them. Maybe put some slows in tarpatch if you haven't already, maybe you wont catch everyone but once in a while you definately will. Especially if there's a lot of people fighting in a close bunch.
If you want to try different things out in the arena or in the pvp zones or if you just want a few tips just send me a /tell in game and I'll be glad to help anyway I can.
Like all PvP there's good and bad days. Give it a few more tries and see how you feel about it then. I think a lot do the mistake of just going once and if they have a bad experience they think its like that everytime. It can be quite fun in the Arena as well as the PvP zones.
Try looking under the defender sections for input on how dark/* defenders works best in PvP. I'm sure there's someone who'll have posted some nifty tips on them
A couple of points that might help. I had similar problems with my rad/dark corruptor in PvP, until I had some things shown to me.
Firstly, the accuracy situation. In PvE, your basic chance to hit is 75%. 1 accuracy SO takes you to about 108% (ish), which allowing for debuffs will mean you should have a 95% chance to hit (the maximum). In PvP, your base accuracy is 50%, so your 1 accuracy SO just takes you to how you were in PvE with no accuracy SOs. You need the 2nd accuracy slot to get to what you are used to in PvE. The good news is that 2slotting accuracy works really, really well in PvE too, so not that big a deal
Dark Miasma. Fear is an awesome tool in PvP, because resistance to it is really, really rare. The duration will be short, but in PvP, putting an opponent out of the fight for even a second is enough to tilt the odds in your favour. Darkest Night is your friend too, and twilight grasp can help mitigate your squishiness.
The biggest thing that allowed me to 'get' PvP in this game? Realising that Team PvP is far, far better than solo PvP.
2 acc SOs is a staple for pvp zones, as mentioned you lose 25% acc in pvp :/
experience helps too, I can remember Gand beeing nothing more than a pincushion for my stalker and now he is more than impressive and gets compliments from other in the zones
There are jerks in the PVP zones but there are more nice people there, it can be a lot of fun, turn on hero/villain chat (menu/options/slide down to chat options/enable hear hero/villain private chat and enable hero/villain broadcast chat) and talk with people.
Fear is awesome as barely anything has resistance to it, tar patch is great and so is your heal, in fact you have the base of a great pvp character you just need to learn how to use it (and get 2 acc SOs in ) If you ahve any questions just ask people
**Acceptable "support" responses**
Its your fault
Its your computers fault
Its your ISPs fault
Also, its worth taking note of the original levels of the people you face in combat. It might not sound like much, given that everyone is sidekicked/exemped to the PVP zones level, but the original level of a character makes a lot of difference, and not just in slots. It seems pretty difficult to PVP in the lower zones now, simply because of the number of higher-level characters exemping down to get in. It gives a bad first view of PVP, when two supposedly equal-level characters keep fighting, but one always seems to win hands-down.
Although PVP can admittedly feel a tad lop-sided and dodgey at times, I think it makes a good distraction. PVP can be great, even with people who arent exactly all-out friendly towards you, but I think the trick is in knowing when to cut your losses and leave. Sometimes the PVP zones get overrun by complete imbeciles and there isnt much you can do other than wait for them to bugger off back to a street corner with their alcopops, so it might be worth grabbing the global names of the PVP'ers you team with often so you can hit the arena sometime.
The pvp in CoH/CoV has it good days and bad days. The bad days are...well bad for a lack of better wording and the good days are totally fantastic
Just stick with it and I'm sure you'll grow to love it
Thank you everyone for the advice. I usually dread some of the PvP players ... especially WoW which made me cry ... thankfully seems a good percentage of sensible peeps here which seems just like PvE in Coh and Cov. Thanks again !
When I have enough influence I may plop some accuracies into slots over "weaker" ones. Probably over my endurance reductions. ( CAB carrying time I guess after that). Dont want an ultimate PvP build or PvE just a nice all rounder. I like playing in groups anyways.
In powers i really dont want missing i run 3accs and tactics...
HIya Risen,
nice to see your post out here, I just wanted to add to waht most of the previous posts have been like. I think PvP really does have it's good days & bad days. Also the enhancments used within it can balance or unbalance the situation. It seems you were running off some enhancements that can be upgraded which may be where the problem is. I'd say not to give up on the PvP.
We need more good players that are willing to have fun. Also tar pit is an awsome power. I've been caught in some where it felt like i was stuck to the floor. But it's alot to do with teaming.
I've teamed and done alot of PvP that with gandrol and that evening was no exception as I was one of the stlakers bouncing about.
My build is full of So's at the moment and has good resistances to slow so it may appear that your powers don't work but i can tell you when i get caught it hurts just as much
if you do want to try anything out or chat about it PM me I'm happy to help.
Hope you find the PvP community here alot better m8
As long there is an arena where people expects you it will always be imbalanced.
The problem with the PvP in CoH/CoV is so big that it is already killing the game. Ofcourse you have people on these forums that loves to PvE only but they obviously have misunderstood the concept of MMORPG's.
This game could be the best PvP game ever but it isnt. It is in fact the worst. There is fear or excitement when killing someone. There isnt a purpose either.
Well i am a hero aint i ? NOPE ! There is no villains charging Atlas Park or harassing new players. There is no purpose for me to exist. This is why i left City of Heroes for good . I really dont see a purpose of playing a game where there is no challenge.

personally I think YOU misunderstand the concept of MMORPGs.. you know there are way more MMORPGs in existance than the high rollers like WoW, EQ, CoX etc etc?
Let's dissect MMORPG a bit shall we? Massive Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game.. you see: "Role Playing" so basically its an online environment where people can act like a certain character, or in other words, play a role in that environment. This DOESNT mean that a RPG should have PvP.
When CoH was new, there was no PvP, AT ALL. It only got added in issue 4 with the arenas, and in issue 6 + CoV with the PvP zones. Personally I like it this way, as it seperates the PvE game from the PvP game, and people can choose whether or not to PvP rather than being forced to PvP.
Sure, new "balances" in CoX are alot of times geared towards PvP. Some PvE players dont like this, personally I dont mind that much as I have yet to see the "nerf" that totally gimps PvE play. For those who now bring up ED, regen nerfs, etc. I say even with ED and those nerfs you STILL can play cant you? If you cant, adapt your style, try again.
Right, getting bit OT there..

So... lemme get this straight? You think the game would improve if new players will get ganked on sight as soon as they enter what is generally the "new players, easy goin" zone? Great idea.. how bout we add some lvl 50 malta and carnies to the zones as well to provide that little extra challenge? I'm sorry, but your post makes no sense at all. If you want a MMORPG all bout PvP, go guild wars, WoW etc. Most players here like the way how CoX is different from all those other games.
To the OP: as others have said before me, PvP has its good days and its bad days. On its bad days even I as a regular PvPer sometimes leave the zone as its just no fun to fight people with a brain size even smaller than a peanut. Try to find some regulars, and when somebody tries harassing you, /ignore em or just gank em even harder next time .
"god, how many devs did hami have to sleep with to get ED?"
Total Cat @Stagefright
Well you are a hero arent you ? What is your purpose if people aint harassing others and ganking new players ? We are heroes, it is about time we acted like ones.
This is a roleplaying game and the devs shouldn't be so careful when doing PvP systems. I want to be afraid, i want people to get angry, i want more emotions on the battlefield. Last night Heroes and Villains were chit chatting on Sirens Call . When i attacked people got all surprised and even heroes booyed me :O

sheesh bud, you DO manage to summarize my whole post in 1 word... kudos to you my man

Well I slotted in two accuracy into my charector and now he hits more often. Pretty steep to hit curve there...
Anyways PvP is just as people people say. Some players are the pits and some are great which I guess is pretty much like PvE CoX except whereas egotisical 13 year olds leave the group quietly in PvE they spam there stupid grievances on broadcast... "dont gank me ... dont gank me". "omg I was watcing the fight and you got me... ".. yeah yeah yeah
Other than that PvP annoys me a bit because a lot of ego players wont group up. ( Often the first to cry dont gank ). They'd rather compete to get kills than share it out. Despite the fact they often find themselves 20 to 1 odds. How odd
Other than that PvP isnt too bad in CoX and doesnt mess up PvE too much.

Unless you are playing with Far-Seer and all you can hear him screaming is 'run Kin, run' for the duration of the arena match

yes, only if you play on the hero side.
Yep PvP in COH+COV is ok
Are stalkers the only viable pvp AT? Noooooo. I managed to get my 400rep with my blaster, and I have a fun attitude to pvp and death
---Heres a secret..this aint a rpg...its just an mmo :P

i personnaly would say that stalker is one of the worst AT for PvP
ROFL! Ermm.. I respectfully don't agree

I agree.. provisionally
I entered sirens call from the villain side for the first time and I was extremely lucky to get one troller's scalp when scrappers were running around.. Of course this was because my stalker is still extremely weak, badly slotted, no stealth, only SS as travel power, lvl 23 But I like challenges, heh.

First and foremost we are people trying to have fun. And I'm not sure about you, but trying to get to Zorahd Strand with a bunch of silly Hunter Nightelves attacking me from shadowsmeld and almost 1-shotting my lock, was far, really far from what I call fun. If you like it, your call, but it is not mine.
About been a hero, well, see that citizen get mugged by a hellion that you don't help because he is too low level, go help.

So this is not the game for you, seriously. GO play WoW, or Lineage II or the future Warhammer. CoX is not about that, and I hope it never becomes this. I don't want to be afraid, I don't want to become angry, ffs, I want to have fun.

I agree. Im here to have fun. The banter in pvp zones is not supposed to be serious sort. I seriously don't like the current moaning and lolling in pvp zones.
And to Imaginary, unfortunate side-effect of being too good, is that opposition feels too easy . I don't think its that much about characters, although a squad of stalkers at the stealth cap are hard-pressed to find anything that would cause problems to them..
During the test server event I was on both sides, and there were times when zone was completely dominated by either heroes or villains, so I think the power balance will be about even after we just get enough players playing villains in PVP..That may take months though.
Overall I think that villain ATs require more skill to play in pvp than hero ones..
Not trying to troll or start a flame here. But is it me or is PVP in Coh and Cov pretty weak. Stalkers seems to be the only viable class option followed by scrappers and tankers and their Cov alternatives.
My defenders powers seems mostly useless. Petrify, fear and even tar pit are useless. Petrify and fear never hit ( 20 times fired off and two different charectors one an courrputor / one something else ). Tar pit is easility jumped over and also ran over with super speed. Some villans just super speed over and manage to get me in about two hits ! Oddly moonbeam and other attack powers seem fine. Seems all about damage damage damge... which is like driving a car in only one gear and for anything other han a damage dealer a silly affair. Its almost as if PvP has been made for WoW esque players.
I have one SO accuracy on most powers BTW. Even if I double this up the result is poor. Also from testing in arena the length is very short so I end up sacrifcing length of effect for hitting.
Anyways like I say not trying to troll, PvP is new in this game for me after I came back from a year break. Just seems PvP is so weak in a otherwise great game. It feels like many MMO's PvP is being added to be more WoW like.
Anyways any thought. Especially on charector builds which help PvP dark miasma set defenders and / or PvP comments. Personal insults can be left out ... ta !
