What do you expect from a SG base?
[ QUOTE ]
Is the infirmary useful?
[/ QUOTE ] Being able to go right to base when you die can be very useful if you have some medium/large inspirations stored in the base. You can stock up and go back to battle fairly quickly.
Also, if you are doing missions/activities in a zone that doesn't have a base beacon (PvP and shadow Shard), you can "go to base" when you die, an click on your blue portal exit to go right back to the exact location you died. If you are inside a mission in those zones, you'll pop up at your mission door. It's very convenient.
Along with the rez circle, you can also earn the ability to make an "Auto Doc" / "Tree of Wonders" by getting SG healing badges. These are also placed in a medical room, and can be used to quickly buy greens and blues. The 3rd SG healing badge is "Combat Logs" which can provide breakfrees. These are not necessarily "must haves", but can still be useful, especially for lower lvl characters.
As for storage.. obviously I keep a few inspiration bins there. It might be a good idea to put in a couple enhancement bins as well. Putting a Vault next to a crafting table makes it easy to craft IOs and put them in a bin to be picked up by your alternate toons when you re-log, or when they are high enough to use them.
If you are worried about people taking your stuff, you can set the permissions on each bin individually so you can keep your own items safe from the rest of the group if you like.
I like the infirmary because it makes my self-destruct a "teleport to base" power.
Crafting tables are very handy.
Inspiration storage is great for TF/SFs.
For many of my characters the enhancement stations are a godsend. Especially that -knockback enhancement.
Storage is not just for hording. Imagine this scenario: Have one character in the group memorize many useful common IO recipes. Let people leave salvage in a specified bin and send that cahracter an email with a requested IO. Craft and drop it into another bin for them to pick up.
Another scenario: Transfer salvage/IO's etc between your own characters without needing a second person's help. This was useful to me last winter as I picked up three of the slow resist IOs on a level 12 character and passed them to characters who needed them and wanted low-enough versions that they would stick around while exemplared.

I can be found, outside of paragon city here.
Thank you everyone at Paragon and on Virtue. When the lights go out in November, you'll find me on Razor Bunny.
Thanks for the help, but particularly:

On another note, you asked if I would expect decorations. I would say "yes" at least to some extent. A base with bare walls in the default patterns is boring and has no personality.
I wouldn't necessarily expect some of the elaborate multi-level rooms that people have been showing off in Base Construction, but some color and neat lighting effects and various furnishings are definitely nice to have and to me at least minimally a requirement (or else I might think the SG too focussed on mechanics while ignoring looking cool, which to me is a big part of the game).

I used the base all the time for the Hollows before a Hospital was added to that zone. I suppose it could be useful for Perez Park missions as well... instead of having to hike all the way back to your mission from the Hospital in Steel or Atlas (for example). Keep in mind that Perez does have a beacon though, so you'd be teleported to the beacon, not your mission door in that zone.
Ad Astra, I'd like to think that I've made a VERY COOL looking "conference/world domination room" with flags and weapons and big round table. It's very hitler-esque. Not what I was going for, but it just looks so cool. It's just a decorative room, no function whatsoever.
The whole base is tech themed, with factory walls in the workshop and custom colors all throughout. The workshop in particular has a lot of decoration.
I was just wondering how much people cared about this kind of thing. Am I wasting time/prestige by making it look shiny?
It just seems a shame that everyone's either in a SG already, or is a lowbie that you can't trust...

Sounds very "nice" (not the adjectve I would pick for Hitleresque, but I can't find another one right now).
I was just trying to convey that when I zone into a base and see a nice thematic or kewl-looking base, I go "Ooohhh, sweet" and think the SG has its act together - superficial, I know.
I would love to see pics sometime.

If your currently personal SG's Base is fully functional, why do you feel the need to add members? Just social? You could join some coalitions or just hang out at the global chat channels instead. Bringing in people invites drama.

Besides having TP to every zone, I also think putting down the teleporters in some sort of organized fashion is important. I hate when I have to randomly hunt to find the correct teleporter.

Like this?
I tried to put them in order by lvl range, but also put adjoining zones together, while keeping the area compact, but not crowded:
Atlas Park
Galaxy City
King's Row
Pocket D
Perez Park
The Hollows
Skyway City
Faultline
Steel Canyon
Boomtown
Talos
Dark Astoria
Independence Port
Terra Volta
Croatoa
Striga
Brickstown
Crey's Folley
Founder's Falls
Eden
Peregrine Island
Rikti War Zone
The large room can also easily fit the Raid TP if/when it ever becomes needed again.
Yes, that works perfectly.

Several of the SGs I'm in seperate hazard zones from normal city zones, then have red lighting for the hazard zone teleporters.

[/ QUOTE ] To me, it's just easier to remember locations this way. I almost never need to go to Boomtown (for example), so If I ever needed to find the TP, I know all I have to do is go to Steel.
Obviously it's not much of a factor anymore (two or 3 years later).. but now I'm just locked into that sort of setup. The funny thing is that King's Row used to be by itself before the Pocket D Beacon came along, and it fit in there nicely. I didn't even have to make any adjustments at all.

My SG on Justice color codes by level. We have the porters separated into two different rooms. Blue for low level zones (Atlas-Steel, arranged the same way as above) and Red for higher levels (Talos-Peregrine).
Color coding the rooms does help memory retention for most of our members.

The main SG I have on Liberty has TPs like this...
[u]Room 1[u]
Steel/Kings
Talos/IP
Atlas/Galaxy
Hollows/Perez
[u]Room 2[u]
Skyway/Faultline
Brickstown/Founder's
PI/Striga
Croatoa/Pocket D
We'll get the rest eventually, but right now the majority of the SG isn't to most of the remaining Hazard areas expect for Boomtown. But it's not far from the Steel TP point, so it's not a major issue.
Thank you for the time...
I've got two large TP rooms to hold all the beacons, one next to the other. From the room entrances, all the regular zones are down the left side, from lowest to highest. All the hazard zones are down the right side from lowest to highest, except for RWZ and Pocket D, which are in the front on that side.
For me, the following are required (in order of my own preference):
Personal Salvage Storage
Crafting table
Rez circle
Salvage storage rack
Enhancement storage
Teleport room
Inspiration storage
Anything else is gravy.
For my own bases, i tend to have at least 6 salvage racks and 2 enhancement tables. And they do all get used. Best way for me to move stuff around from character to character.
I'd say you should have a Invention Crafting Table closest to the entrance, and teleporters near the hospital. Enhancement Tables might be a good idea if a few of the members are going for the IO crafting accolade.

Attached to the entrance/exit are: the med bay, inspiration storage room, and the TP area.
Down the inspiration storage hallway is the enhancement storage and the crafting room. Power and control rooms are further down.

Yeah. Example: You have an alt who does not have KB protection. You can build temp buff that grants it!
I want teleport pads, a med bay, salvage storage, empowerment buff station and an inspiration storage unit for when you are on a TF.

That's one way. In my main SG, we have all the city zones in order by level, then all the hazard zones by level in the next room. Pocket D is an oddball so that's at the end of the city zones.
I've also seen bases that put them all in alphabetical order.

Longer answer: most of the buffs suck. As noted, the knockback one is pretty damn good. The 'invisibility' one (really stealth) will stack with a stealth power and give you invisibility. Aside from those two, the rest are pretty shabby.

So I've got a super(villain)group that's been pretty much just me and my alts, but now that I've got enough prestige for a decent sized base, I'm looking to actually invite people.
What do would you expect out of a SG base? Obviously teleporters to everywhere is a must (got that). I've got personal storage and an invention table. What else are must have items?
Are storage racks that important? It seems you'd have to worry about random members hawking your stuff if you put it there, although I'd probably only invite people I played with pretty often, so it shouldn't be a problem...
Is the infirmary useful?
Do most people care about decorations?
Any other tips for a new base designer?
