Signs You're Getting Too Old to Play CoH
... which you switched by *getting up and using the blasted dial.* (And potentially tweaking to fine-tune.) "Remote control?" That was you, when your dad/brother/etc told you to get up and change the channel for them.
<-- remembers cable TV being new. ("More than six channels including PBS? Who woud've thought?") <-- Remembers MTV actually playing music. <-- remembers getting the Atari 2600 when it was new. (TWO joysticks, paddles and Combat, plus that fake woodgrain. yeah!) <-- PONG console. |
But I can't recall where I put down my wallet... :P
Actually, I would kiss the ground SexyJay walks on if he makes a Colander available as a helmet option. Either that or a helicopter beanie.
Not quite the "get off my lawn" as some (I'll be 36 in April), but I'll admit that when Positron created his MUD version of the game for April Fools' Day, I laughed for what felt like an hour because I remember playing games like that.
Can I just auto-key +rep for Steelclaw? That way as soon as I've spread around enough rep, it automatically goes back and retro-reps him for posts I think deserve it? (Coz I have a mind like a steel sieve.)

Oh im so glad this post was made. It makes me feel a whole lot younger knowing that there are players a good 20 years older enjoying the game. Can't help it really, since through most of my youth I was brought up being told that computer games were for boys. My dad actually thought it was a fad that would die out! Oh how I've teased him about it since.
When I finally 'rebelled' I picked up a Playstation 2 and grabbed some of the old classics everyone raved about (Final Fantasy VII was the first!) I found what I'd been missing and I've been stuck here ever since. There's still a slight hint of the 'boys only' history though, especially in MMO's where everyone assumes you are unless you tell them otherwise. But I suppose everyone would assume you were a girl if Hello Kitty had their own MMO too
- You know you're too old for CoH when you see a large group of people at Wentworths and you assume they're queuing up to cash in their pension giros.

u know when your getting too old to play coh when i start talking to your toon like its real and your best friend
All that and more! I can very vaguely recall having heard about Watergate when that was going on, not that I was old enough to know what the heck it was all about. I can recall laughing at Chevy Chase falling down on SNL.

(SNL stood for "Sorry, not laughing" for me for a long time - don't think I've bothered *looking* since "Weekend Update" lost Dennis Miller. And yeah, I remember the classic crew - Chevy, Dan Akroyd, Belushi and the rest.)
... I also remember when every episode of M*A*S*H was new. >.<
There is only one acceptable sign that you have grown too old for City of Heroes.
Eminent decoposition.
* You see a new List on the first page of the Forums, notice that it's yours but can't remember writing it.
* Customer Support creates a recorded message just for you to remind you what your log-on password is.
* Your arthritis is so bad you just pick one favorite power and link all the keys on the keyboard to it.
* You see a new List on the first page of the Forums, notice that it's yours but can't remember writing it.
* You buy the Technology Booster Pack and are upset that your computer isn't working any better.
* You've spent THREE HOURS in Wentworth's and STILL can't find that recipe for Apple Cobbler!
* You see a new List on the first page of the Forums, notice that it's yours but can't remember writing it.
* Your Regeneration Scrapper reaches level 38 and you get very depressed because your own Moment of Glory was 50 years ago...
* You watch a Rikti invasion and it takes you ten minutes to realize it's not your latest High School Reunion video.
* You see a List on your screen that appears to be a work in progress but can't for the life of you remember writing any of it... Oh what the hell... you hit Submit Reply anyway just to clear it away...
My mind wanders so often you've probably seen its picture on milk cartons. - Me... the first person version of the third person Steelclaw

I lived through 83% of the 70s. But, my dad liked to watch a lot of the older stuff, and I liked to watch stuff with my dad. So, I watched alot of the older stuff.
And, my first computer was a TI99 4a. Also saved to a cassette.
There I was between a rock and a hard place. Then I thought, "What am I doing on this side of the rock?"
Just turned 30 on Wednesday.
I'm right between the young'uns and the old timers in this thread it seems.

For some reason, the games never got old, and I still discover NES games that I never knew existed. (Screw uberleet graphics, the gameplay of older games almost overshadows that of most modern games)

Watched TV on a cabinet unit. Big and heavy. Saw Sesame Street and Electric Company in first seasons, Bonanza was still running, Ironside was Mom's favorite show, though Mary Tyler Moore Show was a good second. I liked first-runs of Mayberry R.F.D., the follow-up to The Andy Griffith Show, though I was too young to have remembered the earliest episodes.
Petula Clark's upbeat Downtown was still playing in all the department stores on Main Street. To this day, that song can immediately bring back a sharp memory of all the sensory experiences of the late 60's / early 70's. (kids' sensory experiences, not the psychedelic kind) Flowered VW vans were a common site. Seriously.
Politically, I was kept from full knowledge of a war (my uncle was just "in the army". I thought he was around a base, like Gomer Pyle), but I was allowed to watch Richard Nixon resign. There was a lot of news chatter and setup before hand, and I remember thinking, "this is taking forever!"
Despite the world's turmoil, and not having any home computers, that was a marvelous time to be a kid.
Too Old? Pfftth! Don't make me laugh. There'll be 6 guys lowering me into a hole before I'm too old. (actually, make that 4 guys. Cost of inflation, ya know...)

Sorry...that just slipped out.

When someone asks your age and you have to stop to do the math. I've given up and have just begun giving an estimate.
You know you're too old for CoH when...
- You strike up a conversation with another player and you find out you went to school with their parents.
- The "teabag' emote isn't even remotely ironic.
- The volume control on your speakers creep up a notch every week.
- You wear sunglasses to look at other players' auras.
- You wake up in the morning with "wwwaasssssssdddddddd" on the screen, drool on the keyboard and a "Quit Task Force" button up.

a necro-thread about being too old to play CoH?
ironic
being 47 and still loving CoH
priceless
There is no such thing as an "innocent bystander"
Here's a query:
Who out there is the OLDEST PLAYER currently active in the game? Is there anyone willing to claim this mantle?

There I was between a rock and a hard place. Then I thought, "What am I doing on this side of the rock?"
You remember the Bass-O-Matic from seeing it live instead of a rerun or best of DVD.
You still own 8 tracks...and play them.
You remember the Fall of The Berlin wall as earth shaking.
You remember when cassettes were considered the hot new tech in music.
Played on a team of 6 last with a 39, 40 43 (me) and 47 and the other two justs didn't say!
- Too old to play when you think cool starts with a c not a k
There I was between a rock and a hard place. Then I thought, "What am I doing on this side of the rock?"
-You still have graph paper at the ready to draw your maps.
-You roll your own die for to-hits.
-You challenge the team leader as being a "poor DM who is playing favorites!"
-You can't find Rikti in your 'Monster Manual'.
-Your 'Player's Handbook' has no tips on how to sell your salvage.
-You thought an 'instanced zone' was what happened to your group after passing around certain party favors...
