Why do Untimed Missions keep failing?

It wasn't on a timer. It was merely that he NOTICED you coming into the mission, and his actions were triggered by that alone. You didn't need to start a fight or even be in the same room with him, for this to happen.

Of course it is. Also, Eislor mentioned this buggy behavior in one of the first few posts in the thread, but apparently the OP ignored or missed it.

I didn't ignore or miss anything. It makes sense the way ZI explained it, it didn't make sense to me in the previous post. However I still don't think it happened because nothing ran by me. I was at the entrance to the zone and knew what was around me.

then the question is, how long were you up and away from your computer? just because you didn't see anyone running by doesn't mean they didn't.

did you petition it in game to have a gm clear the fail and complete it for you? i had to do that 2 times on an escape mission before.

No. I figured I would get an answer to why its happening here hence the posting. I didn't think it was a bug and I'm still not sure what to think.

A few days ago on an Arachnoid map, fighting Dobbs or Dibbs or Biff or whatever his name was, I got defeated. I couldn't knock his HP down faster than he could regen. I visited the fateweaver to reduce the challenge, and reset the mission. 2 mins into the retry I get failed mission.

It's been awhile since I've done that mission... what sort of map is it on? Warehouse, tech lab, office building, outdoor, etc?

The original Mission I was asking about was in a tsoo tunnel. The arachnoid one that failed a few days ago was in an arachnoid spider cave.

yeah, the defeat biff mission doesn't state anywhere(or at least didn't use to) that you have to stop him before he escapes. that is the mission i had to petition 2 times. once he starts running though, if you cant stop him and you get defeated you wont be fast enough to reset the mission. if you did this for the CoT mission, the same thing applies.

Maybe they just vanish, I dunno but nothing ran by me at least today. The biff one who knows.

please, since this is your first toon and first time playing the game, please do not try to argue against people that have been here for quite some time. most of us have had the same issue you have had and are trying to help you understand what is going on. if you were fighting when the mission ended then somehow the boss got by you and ended the mission. he could have run behind you when you were fighting any of the 3 mobs before the mission ended. when fighting in caves, it is highly possible with the camera angles that you can't see everything that is going on around you. even if you scroll all the way back on your camera because it is not an open area.

with that said, go back through ouroboros and do the arc again. make sure you are on heroic so you can beat it for sure and get the badge.

It does sound bugged. However, it can be bugged and still be possible to complete. This sounds a bit like the 'Defend The War Walls' mission. You had to protect some force field generators with Rikti standing near them who would attack them. They were supposed to attack when you came in aggro range. Instead, they would start attacking immediately. If you knew this in advance, and bum-rushed every group, you could complete it.

I just did Biff a few minutes ago (god awful regen on him ) and he also tries to escape, if it makes you feel any better I actually watched him jump through a wall (there must be a hole in the geography there) and start booking for the exit. Luckily I was able to turn on SS and catch him as he exited back into the tunnels. So it is possible that the boss that got past you fell through a whole in the geography and stayed "outside" the map where you couldn't see him all the way to the exit.

Not with the current bug. Many missions where you must prevent the boss from escaping, now the boss will take off as soon as it spawns. Previously it wouldn't start running until it hit a certain % of HP, but it's bugged, and has been for a while. I don't remember when I first noticed the bug, but it was before last issue. I know this because I was surprised that it wasn't fixed in the last issue release.

If you have your NPC dialog turned on in your chat window, you'll usually see the boss say something like "I've got to get out of here!" as soon as it spawns. Mobs spawn when you get withing a certain distance of the area they're in. It's the same distance as the trigger for cutscenes. If you're in windy tunnels or caves the boss might have a ways to run before passing you. If it's more of a straight shot you might see it almost right away.

With each new patch I've been increasingly surprised this has been left unfixed as long as it has.

Bugs aside, though... It's not intended behavior, so the point remains that escape missions =/= timed missions.

Well, it might be a case where they haven't had sufficient detail about the bug reported to help them track it down.

BaBs recently started these threads to get better notifications of graphics & animations bugs. it kinda sounds like they are overwhelmed in bug reports at the moment and may not have good details to help them out (since he also has a suggested format in his threads).

If you want to make sure it gets to the right person's attention, /bug it in game, and if you can on the boards PM it to Ghost Falcon (failing that, Nivene).

i had to do this last night.had a dont let escape mission .flew in allthe way to boss killed him then flew back outside to heal. came backinside to complete mish(click6 glowies)and found out that i couldnt get pass the first 3 minions to get 1st clickie. diffuculty1 couldnt beat up 3 minions. felt like a true coh hero!

sent in a petition and the gm said mission was bugged, no way to win so gm completed mish for me.felt like even less of a hero then some mission arent winnable. no matter what everyone else says.

If there is a hidden timer for the time allowed then they need to say you have X time before he escapes.

The good news is this is a badge mission so I think its flashback available, so you can still grab the badge via Oro.

He might have got away once, but I have a feeling he wont be escaping you again.

AHA! The mysterious Council spy in Arachnos (a similar mission) problem is explained in a thread for me! Now I know for certain it's a bug... heh heh. I knew a mission ending only a minute or two after entering it was behaving incorrectly.

(And that Council spy mission is timed, so you can imagine my confusion as to why it always ended immediately after I entered it when I still had a good hour to "catch" him.)
