I hope you get further then I did, everytime I spoke to them, they simply...repeated their last post. o.0

I recently got a name generic'ed for very valid reasons. I suggested three alternate names, which were completely different from the original and completely innocent. I was told that they were unacceptable because they broke a rule, and to try again. I wrote back to ask what rule they broke and I explained their meaning and my reason for choosing them. I received a very nice response from a second GM saying that the first GM was in error and that the names were acceptable. Subsequently I received an e-mail from the first GM apologizing for his mistake.

So yeah, politely and patiently explain why you think your character should be reinstated and ask if they can explain what rule it broke to be generic'ed in the first place. Good luck.

And fwiw, I vaguely remember a female version of Cap from the '90s when he was stripped of the name Captain America, but I can't recall her name, or what she looked like, and my 'Net searches haven't turned-up anything on her.

And, ummm, if they don't let you get your name back, do NOT make your 3rd name choice a joke choice. In my experience, that's the one you'll get 100% of the time. (Thanks, GMs, for the name "Bound in Pleasure!")

There's an incredibly -vague- resemblance to the modern Ultra Girl's costume, but yours is done up all patriotic like anyway, but even that is stretching it. As others have said, has to be the Marvel name.

I am pissed! I have had the name Marvel Maiden for years now. I created her on my old account back in 2002! And I get on yesterday to play her and I see that she was Generic. I received an email saying that she resembled a hero from the Marvel Universe! ARE YOU SERIOUS! WHO?

What do you the community think? Am I overreacting? I want to go as far a petition. Because I think it is Horse Dong!

Anytime I see a post in which someone is mad that their character got genericed, I feel the urge to point and laugh and tell them just how stupid they were for expecting it [u]not[u] to get generic-ed.

After reading your post, and looking at the few supplied pics, I totally agree with you. Though I will not argue that the character name/concept is fantastic and original, it is certainly not in violation of any rule as far as I can tell.

Contest it, simple as that.

While I sympathize, and think you should escalate it until you reach a GM who can explain who your character was infringing, I'm not sure how you had this character in 2002.

That's who I was thinking of in my earlier post. Looks nothing like the OP's character though.

The problem with the character is obvious. The name "Marvel" is associated with a particular comic book company that sued Cryptic. Any instance with that name in it will be GC'd. I don't think you have a chance at having them change their minds.
Sorry about that.

using the word "Marvel" anywhere in your characters name will get it generic'd.

I don't think just having "Marvel" in a character name is cause to be generic'd, DC has Captain Marvel and they're Marvel Comics' main competitor.

There was no reason for Marvel Maiden to be generic'd and I hope he gets her name back.

"Thanks for your reply. Action was taken on your character because she resembled the Marvel Comics character American Dream, and had the word "Marvel" in its name, which is appropriated for several established copyrighted superhero characters. Some characters such as yours might escape our immediate notice, and I apologize that this apparently occurred in your case."

I just got this today? American Dream? I do not see it at all? Just the star and the blonde hair. I think that is pushing it just a bit!

And on the word "marvel". I see alot of "marvel" named heroes around CoH. Marvel Comics do not own that word.....

Yeah since CoH was not released until 2004. That was my mistake. I meant then.

Wow.... so now you can't have a patriotically themed toon because other characters have had that theme in comic books? Seriously?

I don't see a resemblance. I think it's just the name, period. I think whoever Generic'd you just went looking for the first red white and blue blonde girl they could find and used that as an excuse for their decision.

American Dream?!

...

Really?!

That's all sorts of stretching it. Sure, both characters have predominantly blue patriotic themed costumes, and they're both blonde, but that's like saying any flying male toons with tights, capes and black hair should be genericed for a similarity to Superman.

There are only eight colors, and three of them are on our flag. Something like forty countries have a some combination of red, white, and blue as their flag to boot.

Is Commander Nepal forbidden because his costume is red, white, and blue, or since his name is a combination of a military rank and a country name?

Seriously, Marvel and DC are paranoid, and you people should stop buying their comic books.

Marvel and DC are not doing this, NCsoft is. And you cannot trademark a color scheme anyways. NCSoft is just being paranoid and overreacting. If you stretch far enough every toon in the game can be called a rip off of some existing comic character.

Heroes : Angrem (50 Stone tank), Exo Inferis (50 Fire blaster), Exo Proteus (50 ill/emp), IceVengance (50 cold defender)
Villains : AtomBomb (50 Rad/Kin corruptor), Aleks (50 SS/Inv brute), StoneLethal (50 EM/Stone brute), Davroz (50 Bots/Dark mastermind)

NCSoft is overreacting to having been sued, though. They are paranoid because they have a risk of stupid lawsuits in courts that don't understand the business they are in.

I think they are just reaching with Marvel Maiden. I mean yes when she was first thought of there were certain heroes who help me out. However, American Dream was not one of them. DIdnt even know what that was until today...

Like Fedor said if you stretched far enough almost every hero in this game is based off an existing one in the comics....

I said the same thing earlier. Honestly if you want to you can find some aspect of a copyrighted character in anything.

Sorry you have fire powers and there are copyrighted chars who use fire and have green hair also so you are generic'd.

Its a sad state.

Having your name be generic'ed is always an unhappy experience. Your best bet is always to petition if you feel it has been done in error. Unfortunately it may take a bit of time, but hopefully matters can be resolved to your satisfaction.
