I am pissed! I have had the name Marvel Maiden for years now. I created her on my old account back in 2002! And I get on yesterday to play her and I see that she was Generic. I received an email saying that she resembled a hero from the Marvel Universe! ARE YOU SERIOUS! WHO?

What do you the community think? Am I overreacting? I want to go as far a petition. Because I think it is Horse Dong!

Marvel Maiden 1

Marvel Maiden 2

To be honest I do not think she looks NOTHING like Ms. Marvel. When I created her. The look I was going for was more Power Girl and Wonder Woman, thus the name Marvel Maiden.

Ms. Marvel is no where close to that. Maybe the blond hair but come on!

I do not see Mr. Marvel in this shot!

That does rather suck. I don't see any resemblance to any characters I know. Most likely someone reported you and the GM who responded didn't get past 'Marvel' and slapped a generic on it. You could (and I would) send back an email asking for another GM to look it over, politely. Sometimes those decisions are reversed.

SG Mate: Cien, what the hell is this Rookery thing?
RadDidIt: (interjecting) Dude. It's the Rookery.
SG Mate: Yeah, but what IS it?
RadDidIt: Silliness Incarnate.

I personally don't think the character looks like Ms. Marvel. The only similarities I see is that their both female and blonde.

Like Neko said, send a message asking them to look over it.

Yeah...I would ask for a recount. But do so nicely.

'Horse dong' should probably not enter the conversation.

I have never heard of a trademarked character named Marvel Maiden. Some jerk probably petitioned you because of the word Marvel.

Villains : AtomBomb (50 Rad/Kin corruptor), Aleks (50 SS/Inv brute), StoneLethal (50 EM/Stone brute), Davroz (50 Bots/Dark mastermind)

Dang, that's just stupid.

I concur with some of the above people. Some idiot saw "MARVEL' and said to himself "LOL MARVEL THAT AGINZT EULA GOTTA PETITONZZZZZ!!!11!ONE! LOL"

Definitely get that name back. If you have a petition, I'll vouch for ya...

I would petition and repetition this ruling! Doesn't look anything like Ms. Marvel. If anything, as was already said I believe, looks more like Power Girl but vaguely only.

Waaaait a minute you can have another gm look it over? They told me I had no recourse essentially o.@

I don't know much about comic books, but there's no reason why Marvel owns the word Marvel for character names any more than DC owns the letters DC for referring to people being DC'ed.

You can appeal however many times they will stay the course.

That character doesn't look like Ms. Marvel nor really even the golden age Marvel character Miss America.

But the name Marvel likely is what did it.

Someone I know had a character named Max Steel and didn't look a thing like the DC character Steel but was generic'd for the name Steel in his name. Go fig.

Keep in mind that the first GM that will get the petition is some schmuck in a cramped little cube farm in India, with little or no experience with American comics.

They'll type the name into Google and if it gets a comic related hit, the "Render Generic" button gets pressed.

"City of Heroes. April 27, 2004 - August 31, 2012. Obliterated not with a weapon of mass destruction, not by an all-powerful supervillain... but by a cold-hearted and cowardly corporate suck-up."

Wasn't Max Steel a name of a cartoon character though?

In all honesty, all characters should be generic'd since we all have had influences from copyrighted characters creep into our thoughts. YES GENERIC US ALL!!!

Didn't come up with anything on Wiki or Comicvine for the name, and the costume is original enough.

I'll restate what others have said: Appeal.

Got me. Probably because you have Marvel in the name. That might not be allowed any more.

If you recall what happened to Marvelman...I mean Miracleman ..you can see where this might be an issue...

I used to read Warrior and Marvelman wasn't an "issue" until a summer special came out with Marvelman on the cover and that seemed to pretty much be when the axe dropped and Marvel went on the attack saying that using Marvel in the characters name was causing confusion in the market place or some such. It wasn't even Marvel US that started the suit; it was Marvel UK - at least that's the way that I heard it.

I wouldn't try to use Ultimate in a name either....

I feel for ya. I made a hero using an old D&D character name and got a tell last night saying I must really like superman. I told them I didn't know what they were talking about.

The guy then tells me my heros name is the name of a villain in a superman comic except I use the last name as the first name and the first as the last.

It will be a sad day for me if they get genericized.

I'll throw in my two cents and advise for an appeal. Keep it polite and state your case clearly as to why it shouldn't be genericified. You don't have anything to lose and with any luck you can get your character's name back.

Posted

I just googled "Marvel Maiden" and most of the links referred back to your character, none that I saw referred to an existing comic book character.

Appeal. Be polite but firm. Ask for escalation to a higher authority if you do not get satisfaction.

You're the second hit on Google for "Marvel Maiden".

Contest it with CS. You should get it back.
