Check out the wiki page on Trial Restrictions.
Specifically, trial accounts can't e-mail or /tell others (I think), and only have a few channels they can communicate in.

[/ QUOTE ] There are limitations to the trial accounts in contacting other players that have been put into place to prevent the RMT goons from spamming everything.

Wiki Page on Trial Accounts

Unfortunately some of the restrictions prevent potential new players from fully experiencing the community aspect of the game. New players can't invite people into teams, talk in anything other than the local, help, or team channels. My suggestion to get a good team going is go to Atlas Park, find a group of other low-lvl characters or people standing around, and get on the local channel and say hi, that you're new (we like new people and don't bite), and would like to get a good idea of what the game-play is like. Suggest a sewer run. Even at opening levels they tend to be fairly quick and fun game play with a good group. MOST people will be more than willing to take you up and help you out. Hell, if I weren't at work right now, I would log on and help ya out, but...

Most people in Atlas will be standing under the big statue of Atlas (guy holding the big ball in the middle of the zone) or in the AE building (just to the east of that).

Honestly, for me my MM didn't shine til post 20. I didn't hate getting to 20 by any means but whenever I go back to pre-20 either via Malefactor or Ouroboros, I'm gritting my teeth in frustration...

I'm not sure that the trial will change your opinion but its worth a shot. I'm much happier at 42 than pre 20 by far. I can take on and defeat without difficulty much stronger opponents relative to my level than I could pre 20.

hi guys,

now i tried city of heroes and i must say i'm not excited about it. the gameplay is not what i expected and the combat system is slow and not really impressive.

When i compare the gameplay to world of warcraft it's not even close. I didn't come further then a few levels, then i got bored by the game.

sorry to say this to the people that love the game

Sorry to hear you not liking it. The first few levels can really suck with some builds as the cool powers have to be worked towards. The combat system is different then other MMOs and just need a few days to get used to. I started here and when tried WoW didn't like thier system.. it felt cluncky to me lol. It's just the get used to thing.. played another game for few weeks once and when I came back here spent a few days looking up when wanted to look down and stuff, and even flipping the mouse controls felt wrong

Have you tried something that comes out the gate swinging?
I recently made a sonic/nrg blaster. Always kinda wanted to try one but am mostly a scrapper/brute guy. WOW .. I was real impressed. At lvl 1 I was running around Atlas and dropping lvl 3 LTs like crazy. Much faster running start then most other sets and makes my brute damage that I'm so proud of just look silly lol

Hope you give it another try there's alot of cool things in this game, some I've yet to experience even and I been here for years hehe.

My first suggestion is to make sure they're not trying to contact you on a chat channel that's forbidden to trial accounts. I forget the exact list trials can/can't use (and it sucks hard I KNOW, but you can blame the goldsellers who'd spam tells and emails to people 1500 times a day for those limits). If it's not a forbidden channel, right click on your chat box's tab that says "chat" and select the edit option. Make sure the channel they're talking to you on is in the LEFT column. Left column appears in that chat window tab, the right column DOES NOT. As an added note, you can make as many NEW chat tabs as you like by right clicking on the chat window and selecting the "create new tab" option. That'll let you put whatever channels you want in that new tab, which makes it a bit easier to keep track of things when youv'e got a lot of them you want/need to monitor but don't want the clutter of keeping them all in default chat.

EDIT: Damn I suck at typing. I type all that out and at least 3 people beat me to it.

That's all we ask. It may still not be the game for you, but it is radically different from WoW, so most things will seem strange, or wrong, or counterintuitive.

This is why we often recommend that you forget all of the "conventional wisdom" you learned in other MMOs. They simply don't apply here.

For example:

The holy trinity of Tank, DPS, Healer doesn't exist here. Three Tanks, three Blasters, or even three Defenders can take on most challenges in the game. The strategies will need to change, based on what they are trying to fight, but the game itself is very forgiving to "non-optimal" teams and builds.

As a corrolary to the above, buffs are more valuable than heals. Our buffs are shorter duration than WoWs, but much more powerful. A good Force Field Defender can prevent far more damage from happening in the first place than a good Empathy Defender can ever heal. This isn't to say that the Empathy Defender isn't valuable, but the one who concentrates solely on healing is shortchanging themselves and their team (Empathy has some of the best buffs in the game).

The game is balanced on every hero or villain being able to take on three even level minions at once and win (or one minion and one lieutenant). At lower levels, some Archetypes will have an easier time than others at doing this. As you get better at the game and understanding which mobs pose the greatest threat to you, this ratio will increase. At level 50, my Scrapper thinks nothing of jumping into the middle of a dozen or more +1 enemies and lieutenants.

Don't be afraid to ask for help. This game is not the 800 pound gorilla of the MMO world. It is in our best interests to provide a positive gaming experience to every new player that walks in the door because every new player is valuable. In general, I think we succeed. I encountered a lot of jerks in my short time playing WoW. I think this is partly because the new player isn't considered as valuable. After all, there will be another chunk of fresh meat along within half a second after someone who "can't hack it" decides to leave.

Like I said, after your trial, you may still feel it isn't the game for you, and that's okay, at least you gave us a chance.

There's nothing wrong with not liking a game. I've tried Lineage II in Beta, World of Warcraft for two months, Eve Online for a 14 day trial, Dark Age of Camelot for half a year, and Age of Connan for a month and wasn't interested in sticking with any of them.

Obviously millions of other people (taking them together) felt differently.

In no case did I ever bother with an 'I'm leaving post' as I feel they are all self indulgent wankery.

I did an EU trial initially because there were no US trials at the time. I believe it was 14 days but there wasn't a lvl cap or chat restrictions. I made it to my 20s on that account.

Actually, to be fair, I think OP was comparing current WoW gameplay experience (probably level capped and fully geared out) to current CoH experience (low level, trial account), which isn't comparable.

It sounds like the OP is going to give it another try, with the low level WoW game in mind.

My big piece of advice for the OP (aside from what I've already given), is get into a Safeguard / Mayhem mission at level 5 or 6 with a vet (to insure success, be sure the vet goes over the strategy with you before going in, if they can't describe their plan in relatively simple terms, get another vet ), get that Raptor Pack, and spend some time flying around. If that doesn't sell you, probably nothing will.

Thats is one of the points I was trying to make. If you compare WoW trial with COH trial then thats fair. If you compare WoW lvl Cap with COH Lvl Cap thats fair as well. However, you cannot compare pre 20 COH with lvl 70+ WoW. Its not fair.

Like I was saying, after playing 40+, I hate reverting to pre 20 Mal or Ouroboros... it is so frustrating.

Nah, it was 14 days, but there wasn't the level cap in place. I tried the EQ2 trial prior to this, it looked better than EQ (which I got bored with after 3 weeks,) but it just felt like the same old grind as before. Have some friends that played WoW, the looks alone had nothing to draw my in so I never wasted my time.

I tried the CoH trial, to the full 14 days, really enjoyed it. Went out and bought the HvsV box. I'll get my 21 Badge next month and last month I did the 1yr sub.

EDIT: Oh, and I've purchased, every, single, edition/booster available. Just got my grubby, little hands on the CoV DVD Collectors Edition }:> (Got two of those actually, the first was the EU version. So be wary of any you find being sold on the web.)

Slow?! And you're comparing it to WoW?!

What'd you do, roll up a controller and only use brawl?

I mean, you're entitled to your opinion, but this line just boggles me. Yes, I've played WoW and rather enjoy it until the community starts making me want to kick something...

( And that "Sorry to say that to the people that love it" bit? Could you be more blatant on your trolling? )
